The collection primarily contains single letters that have been donated or purchased by the Library over a period of time. It contains letters from various notable women including Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Christabel Pankhurst, Agnes Maude Royden and Edith How-Martyn. Subjects covered include the women's suffrage campaign, nursing during the Crimean War and entry of women into the professions.

The collection contains letters, 1800-1972, regarding social engagements, comments on literary works, thank-you notes, discussion of charitable works and current events. It includes letters to and from members of the Fawcett family, Florence Nightingale and Frances Power Cobbe.

Highlights include lecture notes by James McCunn as a student on pathology, bacteriology, veterinary surgery, hygiene and dietetics, 1916-1917; notes of lectures on hygiene delievered by Professor Harold Addison Woodruff, 1899-1909 and notes of lectures on pathology delievered by Professor John McFadyean, 1894-1923.

Oriental manuscripts, 12th to 20th centuries. There are several religious texts, although the majority are medical.

Western Manuscripts, c 1250-19th century, including receipt books (domestic medical remedies and culinary recipes), illuminated psalters and prayer books, case notes and prescription books. highlights include: the Wilton Psalter, c 1250; a 15th century copy of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales; medical receipt and prescription books from the 17th century.
