The first paragraph appears to be in Banks's own hand and the remainder in that of an amanuensis or copyist.

I cannot see how Home Rule can be refused to Ireland by any real Liberal; the people have spoken so plainly. I never was a Gladstonite, but you know I am thoroughly a Radical, even a Republican; and I am often sorry that Cromwell's scheme of United States of Europe had not been founded by him ... We have drafted a bill for the Protection of Children ... The last time I was at the Shelter we had ten children in it ... I have no doubt the Society [for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children] is doing good; and I hope it will do more. We now have a night officer, who patrols the streets; but what is one man in London!'

The activity of your pen indicates a desire for reading, observing and thinking, and these in time will prevent you from dogmatically condemning what you do not comprehend, and which it is hardly to be expected you should fully understand. Then too you will cease to attribute to others, notions they do not entertain, and to build theories thereon of your own mistakes. Persevere and in ten years time you will be as wise as you are now foolish, and whatever you may think of this note and the writer now, lay it by 'till that time and then I have no doubt your opinion of both will be correct.' Dated 6 Jan 1832.

Covering note to 2 copies of a pamphlet by Joseph Wood Right of Labour to legislative protection ... (1832). Asking Place 'if he approves of the principle of the work, to use his influence to favor [sic] its circulation.'

I hope you will return Mr. Wood to Parliament, if he can be returned at all, he may be returnd [sic] free of expense, by proper arrangements which the electors are bound to make. Mr. Wood seems to me to be a sincere well wisher to the working people, and therefore commands my respect ... A session or two in Parliament would probably lead him to revise his opinions. I am sure he is able and I conclude he is honest, and consequently ... will not fail to entertain them'. [Joseph Wood was not, in fact, elected in 1832.]

Covering letter (written on behalf of the Property Tax Association) to a printed copy of Joshua Scholefield's speech, (made in the House of Commons on 23 Mar 1841) proposing that a property tax be substituted for the existing customs and excise taxes. Jones forecasts that the proposed property tax 'is likely to become a populat topic at the [forthcoming] elections' and expresses the hope that Fox would be elected MP for Tower Hamlets.
