The Architectural Association Archives comprise of the administrative and educational records of the Architectural Association Inc. (1847-), encompassing material related to the AA's governance, legal and financial operations, property holdings and educational activities. To date, less than one quarter of all the AA's archival records have been formally catalogued, with the focus of phase one of the cataloguing having been upon basic administrative records, including Council and committee minute books and agendas, constitutional records, Registers of Directors, property leases and vital company documents. Phase two of the cataloguing process is ongoing and is focused upon the educational records of the AA school, its staff and its students.

Papers of Iris Murdoch, 1952, comprise a typescript paper 'Nostalgia for the Particular', read by Murdoch to the Aristotelian Society on 9 June 1952. The typewritten paper includes hand written corrections made by Murdoch and discusses the 'mental event', 'the concept of the mind' and other philosophical ideas. The paper was later collated in the volume of Murdoch's essays on philosophical subjects, Existentialists and Mystics: Writings on Literature and Philosophy.

Letters from Otto Löwenstein from prison in Hamburg to his wife, Katia, and child, 28 Mar 1937-13 Mar 1938. The letters are written on prison letter forms, designed for ease of purpose, including date of censor's clearance. Topics include family business and the personal needs of the author. They average one per week.

The core of the archive constitutes the material that remained with E.H. Shepard following his donation of drawings and sketches to the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Cartoon Archive: personal, business, and fan correspondence; personal and family papers; personal ephemera; copies of books he wrote or illustrated; appointment diaries; sketchbooks; photographs; pencil, ink, and watercolour drawings; oil paintings; manuscript material; press cuttings, sales catalogues, and magazines.

In addition, material accumulated by the University of Surrey relating to E.H. Shepard has been catalogued as part of this collection. This accumulated material includes later editions of works illustrated or written by Shepard; books and reference material about Shepard; some photographs of locations specific to Shepard's life; and artwork by Shepard donated by third parties.

Papers of Harold Fraser, 1923-1924, consist of two parts, copies of correspondence from Harold Fraser in Hamburg, to his employers, Helbert, Wagg and Co, merchant bankers based in London, c 1923-1924 (1567/1) which describe the era of hyper-inflation, unemployment and political unrest in Germany; and a translation of a letter entitled, 'A letter from my father about his experiences during the siege and the German occupation of Warsaw', 1940 (1567/2).

Papers of Eleanor Hess, 1872-1990s, document the life of a German Jewish refugee to Great Britain, and, in part, the lives of family members. The papers include emigration and citizenship papers of her grandfather Emil, c1870s; certificates and First World War army records of Julius, her father and correspondence from Eleanor and her brother, Herbert, in Brazil, to their mother, c1950s. The collection includes 2 boxes of family photographs. In addition there is an unpublished memoir of Eleanor, which describes the life of a Jewish girl in Nazi Germany and the experience of emigration to a foreign land.

Papers of Hannele Kuhn, 1893-1945, comprise family correspondence and papers. The letters give a very moving account of the experience of a very close-knit, family split by the Nazis and ultimately condemned to death. The correspondence includes Red Cross telegrams between Hannele and her parents and an aunt (Meta) in Treibnitz, who was last heard of towards the end of the war and is thought to have been killed during the Russian advance. The bulk of the correspondence consists of letters from the parents to Hannele and her guardians. The first few deal with a failed attempt to get Hannele out by the Salvation Army. Most of them are dated up to end of 1940, by which time they were smuggled out by a mutual friend.

Amongst the last letters are a couple from the intermediary after the deportation of Hertha and Franz. Perhaps the most poignant is the parents' last letter, dated 22 June 1942, which, having been re-read some 50 years later by Hannele, is thought to be a farewell letter, containing words of advice on how to lead her life. In addition to the above are a few copy birth, marriage and death certificates pertaining to the Kirk family (Hannele's husband, also a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany).

Papers of Joyce Rozendaal Haldinstein, 1940-1946, consist of the correspondence of Joyce Rozendaal Haldinstein, and relates to her life in Holland under German occupation, her escape across Europe, her internment in Switzerland and her life in the immediate post war years in England and Holland.

An addition to the original foreward, dated 1975, suggests that this version is a transcript copy. Papers of Selig Hecht, 1933, consist of two letters written by Selig Hecht, on a visit to Europe. The first, a letter to a colleague back home, outlines the problems facing Jewish academics in Nazi Germany, and introduces the second which is a much more detailed picture of the privations suffered by Jewish academics and also the indifference of the non-Jewish population, and the culmination of a latent antisemitism in the profession that had long pre-dated the Nazi seizure of power. The latter is addressed to Alfred Cohen. Others mentioned include Willstaetter, Fajans, and Alfred Wiener in his role as Syndikus or Director of the Organisation Centralverein deutscher Staatsbuerger Juedischen Glaubens.

Letter from Baldassarre Boncompagni-Ludovisi, 1858, [To Augustus De Morgan]. Thanking De Morgan for his letter of 14 November 1858, giving information about Francesco Galigai's 'Pratica d'Arithmetica' (1548), and asking for further details. Letter enquires about the library of Dr [Daniel Mitford] Peacock and asks De Morgan to get Count [Guglielmo] Libri to send catalogues of sales he was to hold [in March and August 1859] in England and in Paris. Enquires about further editions of De Morgan's 'Arithmetical Books' (1847) and offers to get one printed in Rome.

The archive comprises two volumes relating to work carried out at Gravetye Manor, 227 letters written to William Robinson and his nurse, Mary Gilpin, and a small number of papers collected by William Robinson. The letters reflect Robinson's wide network of friends and acquaintances, and topics represent many aspects of 19th- and early 20th-century society. His correspondents include fellow horticulturalists (E.A. Bowles, Gertrude Jekyll, Frank Crisp, Mrs C.W. Papers of Benjamin Hall, [1864], comprise a letter to [Frederick G Saunders], Secretary, Great Western Railway Company, complaining about the inadequacy of the current rail facilities and service: '... and the inhabitants of this district will still be shut out from all communication with Bristol'. The journey from London now took 6 hours and 40 minutes: 'I must observe that before the amalgamation was completed we could run up to London in far less time and since the amalgamation the great inconveniences have arisen'.
