Records catalogued under this fonds that date from before 1921 may relate to the activities of the City of London Court before its amalgamation with the Mayor's Court.

Records of Giltspur Street Compter, 1785-1850, including administrative papers, rules and regulations, warrants for arrests and papers relating to the rebuilding of the compter, 1785-1794.

Records of Southwark Compter, also known as Borough Compter, 1608-1842, including lists of prisoners, charge books, warrants for arrest, accounts of deliveries of bread and meat and various administrative papers. Also papers relating to the revived magistracy in Southwark, 1814, when it was decided that one of the Aldermen who had passed the chair would sit daily for justiciary business, receiving an annual salary and assisted by a clerk, until c 1840.

Records relating to the London prison system, 1487-1975. Prisons mentioned include the Houses of Correction at Westminster and Cold Bath Fields, the Debtor's Prison, Newgate, Ludgate, King's Bench, Fleet, Marshalsea, Clerkenwell, Bridewell, Holloway, Whitecross Street, Middlesex and Wandsworth as well as various Compters.

The records include accounts and financial papers; statutes and bills relating to gaols and prisons; Acts of the Court of Common Council and the Court of Aldermen; contracts; indentures; various committee minutes and papers, including reports of the Gaol Committee; petitions; regulations; papers relating to prisoner health; reports of the Commissioners of Prisons; papers relating to Compters, particularly the Committee for the rebuilding of Poultry and Wood Street compters, 1783-89 and papers relating to prison charities. Also a PhD thesis by Wayne Joseph Sheehan entitled The London Prison System 1666-1795, submitted to the University of Maryland in 1975.

Records of the Irish Society, 1613-1983, including Court minute books, Court and Committee minutes, rough minutes, records of the committee to consider purchasing estates in Ireland, 1849, letter books, 1664-1913, letter books (secretary duplicates), letter books (general agent), letter books (miscellaneous), letter books (solicitor), declaration books, charters, records concerning history, constitution and powers, appointments, solicitor's papers, case papers, estate management papers, plans and financial accounts.

Records of the City Imperial Volunteers, 1900-1984, including contemporary publications relating to the Volunteers; financial records of the Volunteers Fund; press cuttings and published accounts; photographs and postcards; campaign diaries; service records for No. 1. Mounted Infantry Company; insignia (buttons and badges); medals and ribbons; equipment and ammunition, including a cannon ball, bullets, a pair of spurs, a wallet and a writing case; menus and programmes from 'welcome home' dinners and menus of reunion dinners.

This collection contains City of London School for Girls administrative records (1895-2005), various printed material including school magazines (1890s-2006), visual material and artefacts including a large collection of photographs depicting pupils and staff (1890s-2004), records of societies connected to the school (such as Girl Guides and material of the City of London Old Girls' Association).

Records of particular interest are the Leaver's Service programmes which provide a fairly comprehensive list of pupils who attended the school. Also of interest are the prize giving programmes which are also useful for researching pupils and school magazines which provide detailed information on school activities, events and other developments.

Papers of Dorothea (or Dorothy) Crompton, pupil at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, 1913-1924. The collection, consisting of concert programmes, advertising posters, professors' reports and correspondence, had been found at the School and had been used in an exhibition there. The exhibition, entitled "Who was Dorothea Crompton?", had been mounted to try to establish some details about Crompton as nothing was known about her. As far as can be gathered, no information about Dorothea Crompton was produced as a result of the exhibition.

Papers of Madeline Payne (1879-1962), concert pianist and former student of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, including correspondence, photographs, programmes, articles and newspaper cuttings, 1893-1957.

Papers of London Almshouses and Rogers' Almshouses, 1615-1991, including rules and regulations, financial accounts, reports, Committee of Management minute books, petitions for admission, Trustees minute books, warden's report books, and various other administrative papers.

Papers of various London Hospitals, 1695-1983, including dockets of hospital leases and uses of the Hospital Seal for the Royal Hospitals; financial accounts and case books for the Denton Hospital (also known as the Port of London Sanitary Hospital) and historical information for the Bethlem Royal Hospital, Maudsley Hospital and St Andrew's Hospital, Dollis Hill. Please note that medical records are subject to a 100 year closure from the date of the last entry.

Records of Bethlem Hospital, 1675-1859, including printed notice, issued by the Governors, seeking subscriptions for the erection of a new hospital in St. George's Fields and other papers relating to the removal to St. George's Fields; instructions for persons applying for the admission of patients into Bethlem Hospital, 1859; rules and orders of Bethlem Hospital, 1854; various other administrative papers.

Records of Emanuel Hospital, 1594-1984, including documents relating to the foundation and history of the hospital, financial accounts, papers regarding staff, rules and regulations, weekly reports by the master of the Hospital, title deeds, petitions for admittance to the hospital, committee minutes and papers, papers relating to the management and sale of the Brandburton estates, Charity Commissioner's orders relating to the hospital and papers regarding the admission and care of pensioners at the hospital.

Records of the Coal Exchange and Market, 1696-1962, including papers of the Clerk of the market, Mayor's Court verdicts regarding the market, rentals and tenancy agreements, financial accounts of the Coal Market and Coal Market Fund, photographs, pamphlets and histories of the market.

Records of Eagle Star Insurance Company Limited and predecessors, including policies (fire, marine, motor, life, contingency, pluvius and other insurance types), minutes, prospectuses, registers of directors, annual reports, financial records, papers relating to staff, papers relating to shareholders, property records and publications.

Records of particular interest are the individual life policies. Substantial register series survive for: English and Scottish Law Life Assurance Association Limited, 1840 - 1863 (CLC/B/005/ESL04/01/01); Sceptre Life Association Limited, 1865 - 1885 (CLC/B/005/SC04/01/01); Star Life Assurance Society Limited, 1843 - 1868 (CLC/B/005/ST04/01/01).

Individual life policies have survived for famous people such as Victoria, Duchess of Kent and Strathearn (CLC/B/005/AL04/01/02/001); Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (CLC/B/005/EA04/01/02/001/010); Charles Dickens (CLC/B/005/EA04/01/02/001/005) and William Henry Smith, founder of W H Smith (CLC/B/005/ST04/01/03/02/001).

Other significant records include Box 1299 (CLC/B/005/PA04/05/03) which is a deed box found in 1944 in a Swansea bank vault containing papers of Swansea agency of Palladium Life Assurance Company. It is noted for its many early stamped letters.

There are many examples of Arthur Frederick Shepherd's pioneering advertising work (e.g. CLC/B/005/ES04/12/01/004-005).

The collection contains a few notable films including 'The Magic Scroll', 1930 (CLC/B/005/ES04/12/03/001) which is considered to be one of the earliest advertising films.

There are varied records relating to staff social activities including the Eagle Dramatic and Operatic Society (CLC/B/005/ES06/04/02), British Dominions Football Club (CLC/B/005/ES06/04/03) and British Dominions Swimming Club (CLC/B/005/ES06/04/04).

Also of significance are the records of Sir Edward Mountain (CLC/B/005/ES01/09/05) including a book signed by 1261 employees and presented to Sir Edward on his silver wedding anniversary in 1922, and papers relating to his famous expedition to find the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland, 1934.
