Records of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, 1760-2002. The archive is central to the history of the modern Jewish community in Britain. It covers virtually every facet of Jewish life in Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - assimiliation, education, political emancipation, Shechita, anti-Semitism. The archive is particularly interesting on the conditions of Jewry outside the UK - there is a lot of information, for example, on the rise of fascism in mainland Europe in the 1930s and the Holocaust.

Memoir of Brig Derrick Baynham, 1939-1942, including descriptions of assisting in the evacuation of Dunkirk, 1940; work in the Local Defence Volunteers, 1941; Special Operations Executive (SOE) training, including resisting interrogation and handling explosives; preparation for mission to support agents in occupied France and identify targets for sabotage; account of the mission including encounter with Milice (Vichy police), liasion with sympathetic French locals in Limoges, recovery of radio transmission equipment from the Milice, establishment of permanent base station in Perigueux and return to England, 1942. Also accounts of the attempted rescue of the surviving crew member of a crashed British bomber off the coast of Anglesey, 1941, for which Baynham was awarded the George Medal, and account of his capture by German troops and subsequent escape, Germany, April 1945.

Papers of concentration camp inmates, 1942-1944, comprise copies of correspondence concerning concentration camps and the death of Jews and notably include a letter from the commandant of Gross Rosen concentration camp, Lower Silesia, to the Gestapo, Düsseldorf regarding the disposal of belongings of deceased Jew, Max Zobel, 1942; letter from Ernst Kaltenbrunner to all police chiefs stating that all executions are to be reported to the local justice department, with reasons for the executions withheld, 1942 and a letter from Stürmbahnführer, SD Latvia, suggesting a lack of concern about notifying the relatives of dead Jews, 1942.

Heilbrunner's account of life in Dachau, 1933, is a typescript memoir of Jewish inmate, Heilbrunner, in 1933. Written in the form of a narrative in the first person; structured into four chapters, describes in some detail the conditions in the camp and the brutality of the camp guards, contains manuscript annotations and corrections.

Papers concerning Theresienstadt, 1940s, comprise copies of a report by Dr Muneles on the Hebrew book cataloguing project at Theresienstadt, 1945; typescript report regarding Theresienstadt, an inventory of the land and property, 1945; history of Theresienstadt during the Nazi era and typescript report on the situation there, providing statistical information relating to the inmates and transcriptions of documents produced during the camp's existence by both the Nazi camp authorities and the Jewish self-governing body.

Papers of the office of Reichsführer SS, 1938-1944, mostly emanate from the office of Reichsführer SS and deal with administrative matters. The collection comprises correspondence between the office of the Reichsführer SS and Reichskulturwalter Hans Hinkel (mainly) regarding administrative and cultural matters, 1939-1944 and an incomplete monthly information sheet Befehle und Mitteilungen, 1939-1942. It most notably includes two original letters from Reichsführer SS, Himmler (1144/1/14-/23); an incomplete set of an in-house information sheet providing instructions to SS members on a variety of matters such as dress protocol for visits to concentration camps by SS members (1144/2/4); qualification for wearing the 'Death's Head' ring of the SS (1144/2/2); and orders forbidding membership of clubs deemed inappropriate.

Plea for food and money from Jews in French internment camp, 1941, comprises a copy of a letter from Dr Michel Lewinsohn and David Kraus in Camp de Vernet- d'Ariège to the Jewish community in Lisbon asking for kosher food for Passover, and money.

Papers of Douglas internment camp, 1940, comprise a copy of a farewell booklet containing reminiscences and poems addressed to Jacob Schartenberg, 'dear companion and housefather', signed by fellow internees at the camp in Douglas, Isle of Man.

Theresienstadt poems collection, 1938, comprise typescript poems written by inmates of Theresienstadt, including Leo Strauss, Myra Strauss Gruhenberg, Mara, Otto Pam, Koppel and Fritz Pollak.

Papers of Paul Hollander relating to internment camps, 1939-1944, notably including a report on cases of murder at the penitentiary camp of Hadjerat m'Guil where 9 people were murdered, including details of the camp officers; statements by Oliver von Schneditz, Joseph Breuer, Gerard and Kurt Huschak to the director of Kanadja; report on the attitude of leading coal mine personnel; copy of a report on a visit to the French internment camps of Colomb Behar, Kenadja (Algeria) and Bour-Arfa (French Maroc) with a list of men in charge of the camps and remarks on their personality and statistics on internees from French internment camp in North Africa who enlisted in the British Pioneer Corps.

Personal and family papers, 1900-1939, ranging from First World War army records to correspondence and passports of several hundred Jews, handed over to the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland whilst the individuals were waiting in collection centres, having been rounded up by the Nazis prior to deportation to Eastern Europe. Papers of Josef Mueller, 1960s, came about as a result of research into the events that took place in Plaszow concentration camp, in particular the crimes and testimony of Josef Mueller, one of the former commandants. The papers consist of the trial judgement, a transcript of his interrogation and various statements in the case against Mueller. There are also numerous statements from Mueller, acting as a witness in the trials of other defendants. All of the records are copies from the main repository for war crimes trials records at Ludwigsburg. Many of the names refererred to in the records have been deleted for reasons of data protection.

Papers of Esther Pauline Lloyd, 1943, comprise two surviving diaries of a British Jewish resident of Jersey, Channel Islands, whilst in internment camps first in Compiegne, France, and later Biberach, Germany.

Microfilm of reports, Jul-Oct 1941, amassed by the Kommandostab RFSS Nachrichtenkompagnie from regional HSSuPF, (Higher SS and police leaders) headquarters in North, South and Central Russia documenting the actions and movements of various battalions and regiments either linked with or part of the Einsatzgruppen. In particular they provide details of the murder of Jews, partisans and other civilians.

Copy of an expert report on the duty of obedience of SS leaders particularly with regard to orders to murder, by Dr Hans-Günther Seraphim, lecturer of Göttingen University, 1960. The report deals with the implications of refusal by SS officers to comply with orders to execute those regarded as enemies of the state. Produced for the Landgericht, Münster.

Letter from the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society addressed to C Aronsfeld of the Jewish Central Information Office, regarding the prosecution of Dr Robert Nussbaum for Rassenschande (marriage or sexual relations between a person considered 'Aryan' and one that was not), and his subsequent death in a concentration camp.

Translation of the trial proceedings of Amon Goeth, made from the original Polish edition of the trial proceedings: Proces Ludobojcy Amona Leopolda Goetha published by Centralna Zydowska Komisja Historyczna (The Central Jewish Historical Committee), 1947. The verbatim proceedings of Amon Goeth's trial are preceded by a speech by the First Prosecution Counsel, Mieczyslaw Siewierski followed by an addresss by the Defence Counsel, Dr. Pokorny. A reading of the indictment follows. This includes a general overview of Nazi activities in Poland; a specific account of Goeth's role during this period; and descriptions of Plaszow Camp, the liquidation of Krakow and Tarnow ghettoes and Szebnia camp.

Minutes of a meeting held between Ing. Georg Vogel and Major Kusmin, 1945, concerning the repatriation of some Czech nationals which Kusmin authorised on receipt of medical certificates and a statement that they are free of lice. The remaining minutes deal with applications for food and clothing and the need for more disinfectors following the removal of the Russian ones.
