Records of the Worshipful Company of Skinners, dating from the 14th century, with deeds dating from the 13th. • Tonbridge School: The records comprise minutes, accounts, reports, registers of pupils, 1817-1948, and of examinations, estate and other administrative papers.

  • Sir Andrew Judd's Commercial School, later the Judd School, at Tonbridge: The records comprise minutes, accounts and registers of pupils, 1888-1943, only. See also Ms 30715 and 30949.
  • Tunbridge Wells Middle School for Boys, later Skinners' School for Boys, Tunbridge Wells: The records comprise minutes, accounts and registers of boys, 1887-1949, only.
  • The Middle School for Girls at Stamford Hill, North London, later known as Skinners' School for Girls: The records comprise minutes, accounts and a register of girls, 1917-28.

  As well as education, the archive includes records of other charitable activity by the company, and of several named charities ie Lawrence Atwell's Charity, Hunt's Charity, John Meredith's Charity and Sir Thomas Smythe's Charity. The Charity Commissioners' reports (1819-40) held in the Printed Books Section contain background information about these charities.

  Skinners' Company almshouses: The records of these almshouses comprise regulations, ca. 1800-9 (Ms 30818); plans [1700?] and 1864 (Ms 30961 and Ms 30995), and schedule of plaques, undated (Ms 31313). Further references may be found in other Skinners' Company records such as minutes and accounts.

  The archive also includes extensive records of the Skinners' estates, not only in the City of London, but also particularly in Clerkenwell (Clarke's Close estate) and St Pancras (Sandhill's estate) in London, to a lesser extent in Kent and Surrey, and in Londonderry in Ireland.

Note that many loose papers, relating to every aspect of the Company's business, and dating from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century, were gathered together, sorted and placed in 277 boxes and a further ca.430 bundles by the Company in ca.1925-30. Most of these boxes, and all surviving bundles, were deposited in the Manuscripts Section in 1996, and their arrangement has been retained with minimal alteration as Mss 34100-1. For schedules of these papers see Ms 34102. Readers should therefore be alert to the possibility that papers on any particular subject of interest to them may be contained within these two series, but obscured because the online catalogue does not include the detailed list contained in Ms 34102, though cross-references from the rest of the catalogue have been provided where possible.

Written permission from the Clerk of the Company is required for access to post-1965 material deposited in the Manuscripts Section, and for a few items of an earlier date which remain confidential.

Records of the Worshipful Company of Grocers, 1345-2000. The records of the Company include registers of freedom admissions from 1346 and of apprentice bindings from 1457. There are also items relating to schools administered by the Company, including: Witney Free Grammar School, Oxfordshire; Hackney Downs Grammar School; Oundle School, Northamptonshire; and Walwyn's Free School, Colwall, Herefordshire. In addition, the Library holds the Company's "Black Book" (Ms 11570) which dates from 1345 and contains details of the foundation of the Fraternity of Pepperers and its ordinances. The original of the 1345 and later ordinances and its grants of arms of 1532 and 1562 have been lost.

Witney Free Grammar School (former references: MS 11631 - 11632). The records, in 14 production units dating between 1670 and 1939, comprise constitutional documents and accounts only. They were deposited with records of the Grocers' Company in 1965 and 1996 and catalogued by Guildhall Library archivists.

Hackney Downs Grammar School (former references: MS11633 - 11635A, MS11821, MS11906 - 11907, MS11912, MS11914, MS39816). The records, in 19 production units dating between 1873 and 1907, comprise minutes, accounts and reports only. They were deposited by the Grocers' Company at various dates since 1965, and catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff.

Title deeds of property in the City start from 1289, but apart from charities and estates records, most series date from the late 16th century: court minutes begin in 1592 while freedom admissions survive from 1593. Records of Saint Peter's Hospital: They comprise: lists of almspeople, ca. 1790-1840 (Ms 21543, pp. 19-21, 64-66); register of applicants, 1855-99 (Ms 21512); papers relating to administration and the conduct of the almspeople, 1629-1898 (Ms 07262); plans ca. 1850 (Ms 21539); and list of library books, 1897 (Ms 21513). Records of the Worshipful Company of Brewers. The records were compiled from 1418, but they include title deeds dating from 1328/9. Records of Dame Alice Owen's Charity: The records include minutes, accounts, registers and estate papers. They are part of the archive of the Worshipful Company of Brewers (further information is given in the Company's introductory note). The collection consists of records and photographs relating to Wandsworth School. The administrative records consist of punishment books, copies of the school rules, lists of prefects, and registers of staff absence. There is an extensive collection of letters from old boys and their families written to the headmaster Mr King during World War Two providing information on casualties, career progressions, and involvement in the armed forces.

Wandle School records: The first series contains several admissions registers and one volume containing school records. These volumes are closed. The second series is comprised of miscellaneous papers such as letters from old pupils, a copy of the Inspectors report on the school in 1959, and papers relating to the history of the school used to organise an exhibition in 2004.

The collection consists of several scrapbooks containing newspaper cuttings, letters, programmes, lists of prize winners and sports team members, and other material. One was compiled by the headmistress Miss Lefroy and contains handwritten entries. There are also photograph albums showing the school, teachers and pupils. There are also numerous examples of artwork by the pupils mostly in the form of programmes for music, drama and sports events held at the school.

Records of the St Botolph Aldgate Parochial School, later the Sir John Cass Junior School. The surviving records of the parish school begin in 1729 (Ms 31138). Audio cassette of an interview between Sporne and his daughter Celia, shortly before his death in 1977, consisting of reminiscences of his own school days, his own time as a teacher and the experiences of his siblings including on discipline; interior and exterior of school buildings; teachers and method of teaching; lessons in literature and mathematics; school books and equipment including the arrival of new school books and stationery in 1903; child poverty; school finance; the impact of the 1902 Education Act on sports facilities, medical inspection and treatment, school meals, scholarships and other developments; musical activities and education; teachers' salaries; religious denominationalism in education; school sport; teacher education, including the pupil teacher system and college training.
Photocopy of a typescript draft of a book entitled 'A Voice in the Wilderness' written by Sporne under the name Raymond Morley in the 1950s, including Sporne's views on the education system and teaching methods; his memories of developments within teaching during his own school days and during his time as a teacher; the methods he used when teaching mathematics to 'retarded' boys within a secondary modern school in the 1940s; an account of a visit by schools inspectors to the school. The collection is contains material relating to Spencer Park school including copies of the school magazine, papers outlining the history of the school and the Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum site, prospectuses, photographs, newspaper cuttings, programmes and various other items. There are no administrative records for the school in the collection. Additionally there is a series of deeds, leases, and other papers relating to the Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum site, the building of the school, and the sale of the site in the 1980s for redevelopment.
