Deeds and other papers, 1721-1923, relating to the estates of the Andrews and Weall families; including title deeds and other documents relating to the Andrews' estate in Pershore, Worcestershire (comprising various premises), 1744-1910, including references to various other individuals (Ref: ACC/1058/1-77); and records relating to the administration of the trust funds and estate of Margaret Andrews (Ref: ACC/1058/78-302), comprising title deeds and other documents relating to the Pinner estate (comprising various premises), 1721-1881, including references to various other individuals (Ref: ACC/1058/78-176), and records relating to the administration of trust funds, 1855-1923, comprising accounts of the trustees, correspondence and conveyances of the estate to property developers (Ref: ACC/1058/177-302).

The trustees' correspondence throws light on the state of farming and agriculture in Middlesex during the 1880s. The papers also include records relating to Margaret Andrews' litigation against her trustees.

Records of the Monro family of Hadley, comprising the family correspondence-it is almost entirely correspondence-of the Monro family, about 1775 to 1905. (The one 1905 letter is an exception; most of the correspondence ends in the 1880's.) During most of the period the family lived at Hadley. They were gentry, descended from the Monro family of Foulis, baronets; but the sort of gentry who earned their livings in the law, in the East India service, etc., rather than being landed gentry. There are three boxes. One box contains the earlier correspondence, mainly from various members of the family. A good deal of it is from overseas, especially India.

There is an attractive grant of arms by Lyon, 1787, to Henry Knight Erskine, esq., and a most competent copy, 1862, of an achievement in full colour of the arms of Doctor Alexander Monro, Principal of the College of Edinburgh, by Henry Frazer, herald and painter, 1687. An unusual document is a passport, 1820, issued by the maire of Lisieux for Cecil Monro of Hadley ('sans profession').

There is quite a batch of letters from James Monro (cb. 1806) who seems to have been captain of an East Indiaman. He was master of the 'Houghton', the command of which he eventually sold for 8,000. There is also a printed pedigree of the Monro's, beginning with John Monro, MD, as part of a pedigree of Smith, baronets, of Hadley; a note on the envelope indicates that this is by Montagu Burrows (who appears to have been a relation).

The other two boxes consist entirely of the correspondence of Cecil J Monro, beginning with his earliest letters home from school and continuing for about fifty years. He went to Harrow and Cambridge, and corresponded with many more or less eminent people. His circle of correspondents included many who were in touch with public life and public affairs or with literary or scientific circles. His career is uncertain. He does not appear to have been a practising barrister, yet he obviously knew a great deal of law. There is much correspondence with Clement Mansfield Ingleby, Shakespearian scholar. Amongst other correspondents are W.J. Prowse, journalist and humourist. One of his friends, Litchfield, seems to have been Darwin's son-in-law. His brother was a barrister, as also had been his father.

Title deeds, leases and other property documents relating to the Manors of Mockings, Pembrokes, Bruces and Dawbeneys, Tottenham.

A document of wide interest is the will of Richard Turnaunt of 1486, leaving, amongst other bequests, 80 worth of silver and gilt to his daughter. The silver is described in detail and includes, for example, a silver gilt cup with a cover in the shape of a columbine with pearls on the knop (a term used to describe a knob or boss on silver plate), weighing 43 ounces troy, a little gold salt with a cover decorated with a stag, and a standing cup and cover of silver parcel gilt chased with feathers or plumes. The documents are in good condition. Most have been numbered on the dorse in what appears to be a nineteenth century hand, as for example "Mx No.4"

Many of the title-holders, trustees and witnesses concerned with these deeds were City of London drapers. John Gedeney used an interesting seal (see Nos. 8,9,17,20) showing a device which may also have been a trade mark. Another draper, John Bederenden, used one of a somewhat similar style (see No. 22). there are a number of interesting and well-preserved seals in this collection, although some are forms of initial letters, or obvious devices such as the shell of Michell (No.22). Standard forms of seals were also used, such as the commonly found mother and child.

• Sworn statement by Thomas Meyer, made before R Ford at Bow Street, 1802, stating that from the examination of John Devlin, in custody at Liverpool, and the description of a hat in his possession, he believes the hat to be that worn by John Cole Steele when he was murdered, and that John Devlin is connected with the crime.

• Letter from W Budd to the magistrates of the Police Office, Bow Street, enclosing handbills [missing] giving a description of a former dragoon suspected of the murder of Mr George Sergeant.

• Letter from the Duke of Portland [Lord Lieutenant of Middlesex] to Viscount Melbourne, 1831, informing him that no accurate estimate of the numbers who "may be likely to join their colours" for militia exercise can be given from the numbers of those enrolled in the County of Middlesex, except in the case of country parishes.

This collection consists of architectural drawings (on paper) of Kneller Hall, Twickenham, by George Mair, 1844-1848. The drawings of both First and Second Series bear the signatures: 'J.P. Kay Shuttleworth' and 'John Kelk'. In addition to the signatures all the drawings bear, in Kay-Shuttleworth's hand and following his signature, a date: 'Feb. 8. 1848' in the case of the First Series, and 'June 17 1848' in the case of Second Series. All the drawings bear, near Mair's inscription, the number 51/1844, which is perhaps his commission number or 'job number'. Moreover, all the drawings bear a circular stencilled stamp reading '1861 R.E. Office London' enclosing a number (either 6, 7, or 12).

Drawings in the First Series are all scaled 1 inch to 10 ft. They are all signed; 'Geo. Mair, architect, 18 Charlotte Street, Bedford Sq, London'. Most have original legends which contain clear indication that they relate to proposed alterations to an existing building. Drawings include: basement plan; ground plan; first floor plan; second floor plan; plan of roofs; entrance elevation; back elevation and side elevation.

Drawings of the Second Series show a very substantially altered building as compared with that depicted in the First Series. They are all signed: 'Geo. Mair, archt., May 1848'. Drawings include: plan of footing and drains; basement plan; ground plan; first floor plan; second floor plan; plan of roofs; north elevation; east elevation; west elevation showing additional buildings over the offices; transverse section C-D on plans and longitudinal section A-B.

These records relate mostly to the estates of the Mitchison family and their relations in Middlesex, London, Northumberland, Surrey and elsewhere, which were managed by William Anthony Mitchison, the elder, on behalf of his father John Mitchison, the elder, his brother John Mitchison, the younger, and himself in the mid and late nineteenth century. The remainder of the accession is composed of private papers of members of the Mitchison family. These are generally draft marriage settlements, drafts wills, and draft executors' papers. There are also some papers relating to trusts and shares. The private papers of John Mitchison the younger include, besides papers relating to the inquiry into his state of mind, transcripts of accounts of his estate from 1856-99, and records relating to his establishment in Brighton.

This accession was originally composed of forty bundles, bearing solicitors' numbering on the wrapper, where these remained. Most also bore labels giving a rough summary of the contents-not always correct-the sectors' number and a title assigning it to a member of the Mitchison, Maw or Sturges family (ref: ACC/1156/154). These have been used as sectional headings in the catalogue, and where the label does not survive, or is defective, the bundle has been assigned to the member of the family who from the contents, seems likely to have been the original assignee. In a few cases, new titles have had to be substituted, as in 178, 191-3. Inside each bundle was one or more bundles which form the basic unit of this list. A corresponding list of the original larger bundles with the new numbering of the inner bundles is appended. Bundles 807, 813 and 868 appear to be incomplete. The contents of the bundles are largely draft deeds, mostly leases and affidavits, and correspondence. As solicitors' drafts, the information given in the draft affidavits is on occasions contradictory or misleading. There are a few original deeds, inducing a small number of conveyances. In several bundles, stamps are missing from correspondence.

Inventory of Lady Anne Belasyse's goods and monies taken in her houses in Whitton, Middlesex, Great Queen Street, St. Giles in the Fields, and St James's Square, Westminster, on 13 and 14 September 1694 and on 5 February 1694/5.

The remainder of the volume is an incomplete inventory, ca. 1612 to 1642, of the goods of an un-named sheep farmer. The location of his property is not disclosed but from internal evidence it is unlikely to be in Middlesex and probably is in north west Berkshire.
