Recruitment and fundraising posters, World War One, 1914-1916, including Parliamentary Recruiting Committee posters and Parliamentary War Savings Committee posters. The posters are full colour and are designed as postive and negative propaganda to aid recruitment and encourage donation to the war effort and were aimed at domestic civilian audiences. Highlights include posters referring to the sinking of the liner, the Lusitania, appeals to assist in the defence of Belgium, examples of alleged German atrocities, and representations of Britain, British families and the British way of life thought to be under threat.

The archive consists of letters to Mrs Vernon relating to a biography of Philippa Fawcett, the daughter of Millicent, which she wrote in May 1957 and sent in typescript to Miss Douie, the then Librarian of the Fawcett Society and to Miss Philippa Strachey, Secretary of the Fawcett Society for many years, also to Dame Margaret Cole.

The archive consists of a manuscript journal of a tour of Europe, 1826-1828.

The collection contains correspondence that discusses social visits, works of a literary nature, invitational offers to engagements, provision of books for book sale organised by Mrs Alys Russell. The collection also includes extensive communication from Beatrice Harraden to Daisy Solomon and various autograph signatures.

The Charles Hasler collection is comprised of printed ephemera, including greetings cards, cigarette cards, journals, invitations, books, exhibition catalogues, sales catalogues, prints, packaging, articles, books, business records, photographs, photocopies, manuscripts, slides, colour transparencies, newspaper clippings and journals and trade literature. There are also defined groupings of material, including designs and artwork, which usually relate to specific projects including: typography (contemporary and historical; particularly monotype), printing techniques (particularly colour), transport, Greenwich, architecture, wine, fashion, watercolour painting, book binding and photography. In addition, the collection includes material from the Ministry of Information campaigns during World War Two, including "Dig for Victory" and "Careless Talk Costs Lives" and material relating to the Festival of Britain, 1951.

Papers of Daniel Webster, 1852, comprise a letter to the Secretary of State of Pennsylvania. The letter contains notification of the despatch of 'on copy of the "United States Official Register" for the year 1851'.

Written and signed on behalf of the firm by P Hubbersty. The note is written on the blank inner pages of the circular letter Mineral laws and customs of the wapentake of Wirksworth.

Letters and cards written by Iris Murdoch to artist Rachel Fenner from 1964 onwards. Murdoch taught Fenner at the Royal College of Art and they remained friends afterwards. Topics covered in their correspondence includes Fenner's studies and later work, Murdoch's work, their travels, arranging meetings, and general family news. There are over 300 letters in total.

Two folders of letters from Iris Murdoch to her friend Stephen Gardiner dating from [1973-1990]. Gardiner was an architect known for his work on public buildings, and some of the letters from Murdoch discuss their shared love for art and architecture.

With an accompanying letter written by Iris Murdoch dated 15 Jul 1969 agreeing to write a piece for him, plus a postcard, brief biography of and review of an exhibition by George Pappas.

Letters sent from Iris Murdoch to French author and poet Raymond Queneau, dating from 1946 to 1975. Iris met Queneau while doing war work with the UNRRA, and enjoyed a regular correspondence with him. She claimed that she owed much of her writing to her friendship with Queneau, and dedicated her first novel 'Under the Net' to him. The letters cover a number of topics including the early days of Murdoch's writing and philosophical views, her work with the UNRRA, and early relationships.

Letters from Iris Murdoch to Mary McIntosh, who was a student of Murdoch's at St Anne's College, Oxford. McIntosh went on to be a renowned sociologist. These letters are from the period 1955-1958, when McIntosh was a student and represent her student/ teacher relationship with Iris Murdoch.

Collection comprises correspondence with Philip Hammersley Leathes, manuscript papers, diaries, devotionals, dictionaries and pedigree rolls, title deeds and indentures, printed books and pamphlets, catalogues and the manuscripts of the architect, John Carter, [1350-1863]. The papers relate to issues in maritime law including limitations of shipowners' liability; bills of lading (issued by the carrier to the shipper on delivery of goods for shipment); the Hague Rules (defining the rights and liabilities of a carrier, introduced in Brussels in 1921 and adopted first as clauses in bills of lading and after 1923 as the Brussels Convention on Limitation of Liability); the 'gold clause' concerning contradictions in international conventions regarding the extent of liability; carriage of nuclear material by sea and the liability of operators, including the OEEC (Organisation for European Economic Co-operation) convention; and issues relating to oil pollution in the wake of the Torrey Canyon incident (1967).

The letterbook is entitled 'Autographs chiefly of my Literary Friends'. As this indicates, the letters were mostly retained for the signatures and many letters have had the text removed, leaving only the signature and perhaps the address. Other letters are incomplete, usually retaining just the last sheet. Most of the letters are written to Weymouth himself, but some are in the form of testimonials for him.

Correspondence between Thomas Henry Huxley and Henrietta Anne Heathorn, 1847-1854, written during their engagement whilst Henrietta was living in Australia, and providing a detailed account of their relationship.

Papers of Jewish girl in Vienna, 1939-1941, comprise mirror image typescript mimeographed transcript of correspondence from a 12 year old Jewish girl in Vienna and her aunt to relatives in Great Britain describing conditions in the city.

Papers relating to the International Conference for Jewish Social Work, Jul 1936, including reports on the state of Jewish social work in Europe and USA; letter from M J Karpf to Professor D Cohen of the Jewish Central Information Office expressing concern that the delegation to the Third International Conference from Germany was planning to use the conference for propaganda purposes and printed handbook entitled Social Work and the Community, studies in preparation for the International Conference on Social Work.

This World War Two Austrian soldier's letter, amongst other things, describes the systematic murder carried out by the Wehrmacht in Poland, and in particular the murder of civilians by the author's unit. The author also mentions the murder of a number of their own officers by the rank and file and includes an English translation.

Goldschmied family papers, 1938-1971, document the fate of a Jewish mixed race family in Vienna during the Nazi era and notably include passport ID cards and correspondence, personal accounts by Maria Goldschmied and photographs.

Including a letter from G Ellis Flack from Nottingham University, where the shell collection is now housed, 1951; autograph in pencil; correspondence with Dr John Shaw Billings, 23 Oct 1876-4 Dec 1876, requesting advice from Nightingale on the building of a hospital in Baltimore by the Johns Hopkins Trust; and 2 letters relating to the efforts to locate the correspondence, Apr-May 1956.

Working papers and correspondence of Sir John Henry Gaddum. The scientific material in the collection centres on a run of student and laboratory notebooks for 1922-1965, together with files of notes and calculations on biological assay and other topics. Further papers concentrate on Gaddum's teaching and publications in the form of lecture scripts, typescripts of articles and related correspondence. Material on his administrative work includes correspondence on conferences and organizations, with some Royal Society papers, but also Physiological Society letters, 1936-1941. Non-paper records such as slides and personal souvenirs are also preserved.
