Morrison and Hobson family papers, 1807-1963. The papers are the product of a period of considerable spiritual, cultural and political change in China. They are a significant source for study of the development of Protestant missions in China (in particular the role of the medical mission and the introduction of Western medicine), and also provide evidence of the involvement of the missionaries with issues of British trade and diplomacy.

MSS. 5827-5852: correspondence and papers, especially of the Revd Robert Morrison (1782-1834), missionary in China, 1807-1834; John Robert Morrison (1814-1843), Chinese interpreter, Colonial Secretary of the Hong Kong government; and Dr Benjamin Hobson (1816-1873), medical missionary in China, 1839-1859. The majority comprise personal and domestic correspondence of the Morrison and Hobson families and their friends, with less emphasis on official papers, although the collection includes letters on the Peacock expedition to Siam and Cochin China led by Edmund Roberts (1784-1836), United States merchant and diplomat, 1832 (MS.5830), and letters to Benjamin Hobson from leading missionaries. 1843-1862 (MS.5839). Insight into missionary work in China can be gained in particular from the letters of the Revd. Robert Morrison. MS. 7127: 'Domestic Memoir of Mrs Morrison', by the Revd. Robert Morrison, addressed to his children Mary Rebecca and John Robert Morrison (1814-1843), 5-7 January 1824. Mary Morrison, Robert's first wife, died of cholera at Macao on 10 June 1821. This memoir was compiled by Robert Morrison during the voyage home from China aboard H.E.I.C.S. Waterloo.

Daybooks of Friedrich Wilhelm Lorinser containing surgical notes, and a collection of manuscripts, 1852-1893.

The volumes comprise McGrigor's holograph autobiography.

The collection consists of original and copy documents relating to Viscount Nelson. Although it spans his career from 1780 to his death in 1805, the bulk of the collection centres on 1798 - the year of the battle of Aboukir Bay - and the three years 1803-1805, during which Nelson commanded the Mediterranean Fleet. Included are several hundred official reports and surveys concerned with the manning, ordnance, stores, defects and sick lists of the ships under Nelson's overall command, plus reports on courts martial, prize money, prisoners, sailors' pay, etc. Also present are weekly reports by the chief physicians of the Fleet comparing health on various vessels and giving details of treatments proposed; letters to Nelson on issues such as inventions, requests for places, etc.; and a collection of bills. The papers carry the signatures of most of the senior officers under Nelson and are generally addressed to Nelson himself.

Notes of lectures on surgery, [1665], given at the Archispedale di Santo Spirito in Rome. An inscription inside MS.3819 seems to attribute the lectures to Paulus, who is not identified. Produced in Rome.

Journals of holiday tours in the years 1868-1892. In general the destination was Switzerland, the journey there and back from England taking in, at various times, parts of Belgium, Germany, Austria-Hungary (specifically Bohemia and the Tyrol), Italy and France. Exceptions are MS.4507, documenting a tour taking Sewell to South-West France; MS.4508, taking him to the United States and Canada; MS.4512, taking him to Norway; MS.4513, taking him to Northern England, Scotland and Ireland; and MS.4515, taking him to Southern England and the Isle of Wight. The journals are illustrated with inset material such as advertisments, photographs and folding maps.

'Chirurgie complète de Ph. J. Roux', Notes of lectures: stated to have belonged to Philibert Joseph Roux by Desgranges, the Paris bookseller. Written by the same hand as MSS. Nos. 4292, 4293, which are also notes of lectures by Roux, and No. 1970 [Cullerier]. Produced in Paris.

WMS/Amer.94 comprises documents relating to Andrade y Pastor, the majority by other hands: certificates of qualification, licences to carry firearms, bills for anatomical equipment and medical books, letters of appointment, an account of a medical case in which Andrade y Pastor took part, and official correspondence between him and other members of the faculty. WMS/Amer.136 consists of biographical drafts dating from shortly after Andrade y Pastor's death, by an unknown individual.

These manuscripts comprise two copies of a work on the theory and extensive therapeutic uses of Peruvian balsam, probably produced in Mexico in the second half of the 18th century.

These items comprise disbound sections of a recipe book, possibly that of a hacienda; the probable area of origin is Amozoc de Mota, Puebla, Mexico. They give recipes for the treatment of diseases such as typhus, cholera and smallpox. WMS/Amer.55 comprises a copy of a contemporary broadside by Gaspar Escayola.

The collection comprises a detailed financial report on the state of the hospital, dated 1819 (WMS/Amer.80) and a prescription book for the women's section of a large hospital, dated 1840 and conjecturally assigned to the Hospital de San Andrés (WMS/Amer.87).

The Pamphlet Collection consists of printed material less than 60 pages in length and includes government policies, reports, annual reports and campaigning material, primary law, including Bills and Acts. The subject material of the collection reflects and enriches the wide range of topics held elsewhere in the Women's Library.The topics covered include: English fiction, children's stories, poetry, women's organisations, feminism, role of women in society - UK and abroad, nursing, sex discrimination law, divorce law, employment, occupations, careers, equal opportunities, labour law, pension law, social security, taxation, housing, health, pregnancy, abortion, birth control, domestic violence, mothers, one-parent families, children, family life, housekeeping, religion, ordination, arts, costume, suffrage. The 'UDC Pamphlet Collection' [Universal Dewey Decimal Classification]: In addition to the main Pamphlet Collection is the 'UDC Pamphlet Collection.' The UDC collection was the first pamphlet collection created by the Library and consists of approximately 10,000 pamphlets dating from mid nineteenth to mid twentieth centuries, covering all subjects. As the collection was gradually acquired during the Library's first 20 years of life, it was arranged by subject, using the Universal Decimal Classification system. The pamphlets were primarily deposited by organisations and individuals, although some purchases were made. There is a finding aid kept with the collection but the collection was never catalogued and therefore remained a hidden resource within the Library for more than 80 years. Unsurprisingly other libraries did not collect most of these pamphlets. In 2007 as part of a cataloguing funding bid preliminary sampling of the collection against Copac (the merged online catalogues of 24 university research libraries in the UK, plus the British Library and the National Library of Scotland) found that over 60% of the UDC pamphlets were not listed in these major research collections. This is a very significant level of unique printed material.Cataloguing of the UDC collection started in 2007 and as the pamphlets are catatogued, they are transferred to the main pamphlet collection described above. As at 2009 the collection was partially catalogued and The Library was seeking additional funds to complete the project.

The papers listed here relate chiefly to the affairs of the University of London, and to the London County Council. Though many of Collins' correspondents were fellow physicians and scientists, there is little in the correspondence relating to medical or scientific subjects. There is some material relating directly to national politics in Collins' autobiographical papers, and a full account by Collins of the Royal Commission on Vaccination. Given the range of Collins' interests, this is a small collection indeed. It appears however, that Collins himself carefully weeded and arranged his own papers. The list which follows here preserves, as far as possible, the original arrangement. A box of printed material, containing pamphlets, offprints of articles, speeches etc. by Collins, 1882-1925, was deposited with the papers. These relate chiefly to medical and political subjects. They are not listed here in detail. An additional deposit comprising press-cuttings, autobiographical material including sketches of contemporaries, archives relating to Collin's work on University of London bodies, his parliamentary career, and speeches was deposited in 1996. A box list has been compiled for this deposit.
