Records of the Chartered Gas Light and Coke Company and predecessors, 1823-1894. This collection contains agreements, contracts, licenses, specifications and patents, and related correspondence for the Chartered Gas Light and Coke Company, and other Companies which later merged with the Chartered Company, including Great Central Gas Consumers Company, Imperial Gas Light and Coke Company, and London Gas Light Company.

The records chart the early development of London's system of gas supply and the relationship between different Companies operating London. The agreements contain plans of London and mains supplies, and include gas lighting in the newly built Post Office, in the City of London in 1828, and the supply of coal fuel from Newcastle. The licenses, specifications and patents, and related correspondence illustrate the Companies' use of new methods in the manufacture of gas, such as gas purifying, the active involvement of the Chartered Company's engineers in these inventions, such as George Lowe, Alexander Angus Croll, and Frederick John Evans, and the legal difficulties involved. The contracts cover the construction of gas works at Bow Common, Edmonton, Fulham, Hornsey, Kilburn, Saint Pancras, Vauxhall, and Westminster, and disputes which arose between gas Companies and contracted builders and engineers.

The collection also includes compensation claims from a gas explosion in Islington in 1878, a list of proprietors of the Chartered Company and their addresses in 1829, and the impact from the building of London's 'sub-railways' on gas mains.

Papers of the Jersey family of Osterley Park, Heston, including printed sermons and religious writings, political essays, county maps, printed plays and poetry, correspondence and other papers. Estate records comprise plans of the estate, records relating to the transfer of Osterley Park to the National Trust and inventories and catalogues.

Records of the Grand Order of Israel and Shield of David Friendly Society. The records relate to the administration of the Society, property investments and the social aspects of the Society, for example, there are files relating to the Annual Dinner and Ball, quizzes and newsletters.

Records of the Oriental Club charting the development of the club from its foundation in 1824 through to the present day; most areas of the club's history are well documented.

A particularly full set of minute books are held 1824-1978 for Annual General Meetings, the meetings of Trustees, the Committee of Management, the House Committee and various sub-committees. These volumes record both the major developments in club policy as well as the more routine occurrences and issues which affected the club. Together they give a rounded picture of club life.

Membership records are held 1825-2002 as are staff records 1858-1968. Some closure periods apply to both of these series and you are advised to consult the list in full.

For a wideranging series of records outlining the many different facets of club life, the secretary's papers are useful. Although the collection does not contain a complete set of secretary's correspondence, material held includes administrative files on a wide range of issues, letters dealing with complaints, files arranging club events, notices to members and staff, letters regarding honorary membership, and portrait subscription papers

Records relating to financial matters and club property are also held. Material includes deeds, plans and photographs, as well as a number of chairman's files relating to the financial policies used to save the club in the 1950s, to the purchase of Stratford House and to the leasing of the Hanover Square site.

A number of ephemeral items are also held. These include scrapbooks recording the history of the club, photographs, historical documents and printed material. Most noteworthy are a series of nineteenth century photographs of India and Japan and an important contemporary account of the battle with the Rohillas in 1790s, complete with a coloured drawing depicting the deployment of forces on the battlefield.

Records of Whitbread and Company Ltd, brewers, with the papers of its subsidiary companies originally based in the London area, 1742-2000. These records will primarily be of interest to those concerned with the foundation and development of breweries or with the history of family businesses. A large collection of plans of properties, including public houses (LMA/4453/F/08), along with the Whitbread Archivist's research files (LMA/4453/G/05) will also be of interest to local historians researching specific public houses in the London area. Genealogical information about Whitbread employees is available in the Salaries Books (LMA/4453/E/01) and Pensioners Books (LMA/4453/E/04).

Accounts records of Whitbread and Company Limited, brewers, including Company accounts books (1815-1959) together with the annual copies of accounts and balance sheets issued to the director from 1890 through to 1952, statement of expenditure books from Britannia Street (1913-1922), cash books (1770-1959), deposit and depreciation ledgers (1916-1949 and 1938-1951 respectively), loan diaries and applications (1885-1919), securities ledgers and shares registers along with an unbroken series of rest books from 1799 through to 1918 with an additional series of rest books from 1941 to 1956.

Records include ledgers detailing Whitbread exports and ship stocks from the 1920s through to the 1970s along with advertising from the launch of various Whitbread products abroad most notably that of Mackeson Stout and Whitbread Premium Draught Beer.

Records of Jude Hanbury and Company Limited, brewers, including accounts ledgers and financial reports from the 1940s through the the 1960s along with earlier corporate correspondence dating from the 1920s and 1930s which includes the agreement between Jude Hanbury and Mackeson for the purchase of freehold property in 1934.

Records of Peal and Company, bootmakers, 1811-1964. The collection consists of 660 items, 40 of which are administrative records such as account books and ledgers. The remaining 620 volumes are 'Feet Books' recording each order and usually containing an outline drawing of the customer's feet. Every book includes 150 orders and was given a running number. The earliest surviving book is no. 23 from the 1870s and the last is no. 1002 from shortly before the firm closed in 1965.

Records of the Victorian Society. The collection principally contains case files compiled by the Society's Buildings Sub-Committee and relating to individual buildings for which listed building consent or statutory listing was sought. Remaining items comprise lists of members and a small selection of early printed items about the Society and its activities.

The case-files provide contextual information regarding the discussions and decisions of the Victorian Society over individual buildings. They contain useful information for researching conservation and planning issues surrounding these buildings. Their primary value however is in recording the workings of the Society itself and the personalities and opinions of its members. With the records of English Heritage (also held at London Metropolitan Archives), local planning authorities, and other voluntary bodies (such as the Georgian Group, Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and the Twentieth Century Society), this collection could help compile a comprehensive study into building conservation in England and Wales in the second half of the 20th century generally.

The case-file series is incomplete (some files have been destroyed while others have been retained by the Society) and other principal records of the Society, such as minutes of the Council and of the Buildings Sub-Committee and issues of The Victorian magazine have not been deposited. The membership lists contain personal information about members and access to these files is restricted.

Although based in London, the Society acted in the interest of buildings throughout Great Britain. There are a few instances where buildings overseas where also drawn to the Society's attention. The Society was not solely concerned with the exterior of buildings. It attributed importance to interior decoration and furnishings, and to commemorative monuments and street furniture erected broadly within the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

The collection is rich in information about the Society. As well as recording the Society's cause celbres it also includes a large number of smaller Buildings and structures. It covers the Houses of Parliament and Tower Bridge at one end of the scale and street lamps in Cambridge and fonts in churches at the other.

Records of Greater Access to Publishing, including minutes of meetings, funding applications, conference planning notes, and packs. Also press cutting from The Bookseller about the organisation and letterhead.

Records relating to event 'Salkey's Score', commemorating the life of Andrew Salkey. Includes correspondence and minutes for the setting up of the committee. Biographical information on all participants. Drafts and proof copies for the programmes and letterhead. An original poster of Salkey's poem on the underground, A Song for England and copied pages from the comment book by attendees of the symposium.

Correspondence with Andrew Salkey, writer and broadcaster. Letters date from prior to Andrew Salkey leaving England to take up a professorship at Amherst College in North America. His continued involvement in the development of Bogle L'Ouverture was achieved through regular correspondence with Eric, Accabre and Jessica Huntley. He helped to create and maintain links to literary organisations and individuals in the States, the Caribbean and South America. The letters offer, advice, encouragement and information.

The series includes five dated and numbered files. Many of the letters are informal and friendly. Personal and current political issues of the day are commented on as are management, marketing and strategic planning for the development of Bogle-L'Ouverture.

Records of the Walter Rodney Memorial Trust, including correspondence; publicity material; receipt books; and papers relating to events including photographs and programmes. Also DVD "Remembering Walter Rodney", research and commentary by Dr Margaret Andrews with contributions from Eric and Jessica Huntley, 2010.

Records of the African Caribbean and Minorities 2000 Cooperative. This material consists of a draft letter introducing the idea for a cooperative and a list of invited persons.

The collection contains the administrative papers of the Barbican Arts Group Trust including policy documents; minutes of meetings; financial records; property records; and artists' details. In addition, the collection includes a range of visual material showing artists and their work as well as printed publicity material for exhibitions. The Trust's outreach work is represented through a number of school packs and booklets.

Papers relating the the estate of Stephen Warwick, including deeds for property in Bow, Poplar and Stepney; wiils; correspondence; bills; and judicial records for Chancery case Thomas and Sarah Eames v. Louisa Warwick.
