Papers of Capt John Christopher, consisting of certificates and letters of reference, a disbursement book of the MINMANUETH 1865 to 1871, an account book relating to the LIZZIE MORTON 1875 to 1877 and a rough notebook 1870 to 1871.

Papers of Alfred Ernle Montacute Chatfield, consisting mainly of semi-official and private letters, 1932 to 1940, from Churchill (1874-1965), Lord Lothian (1882-1940), Admirals Sir Roger Backhouse (1878-1939), Sir Frederic Dreyer (1878-1956), Sir W.W. Fisher (q.v.), Lord Beatty (1871-1936), Sir John Kelly (q.v.), Sir (William) Howard Kelly (q.v.), Sir Charles Little (1882-1973), Sir Eric Fullerton (q.v).), Sir Dudley Pound (1877-1943) and other commanders-in-chief. The topics referred to in this correspondence include the battle of Jutland, 1916, the Invergordon Mutiny, 1931, the Naval Disarmament Conference, 1935, the Abyssinia crisis, 1935, the Spanish Civil War, 1936, the problems of defence and rearmament during the 1930s, international relations and control of the Fleet Air Arm. There are also photograph albums relating to the Royal Tour of India, the Mediterranean Command and the India Mission.

Papers of Reverend Thomas Brooke Clarke. They refer to Dr Clarke's appointment, to the renting of a house in Greenwich, the building of an asylum house, to glebe land of Pinner and produce of Harrow. There are also a series of letters from his son at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, 1812 to 1814, and some from George Fitzernest while at Magdalen College, Oxford.

Papers of Clumber House. The collection mainly consistis of eleven volumes of copies, some of them contemporary, of original documents. Dating from the early seventeenth century is a copy of 'Admiralli Angliae a tempore regis Edwardi secundi ano 1307 ad anui domini 1590'; some notes added to the text in a different hand extend this list of admirals to cover the years 1264 to 1618. Slightly later is a seventeenth-century copy of judges' opinions regarding the payment of ship money, 1638. There is a collection of bound documents relating to naval administration which includes copies of 'A brief discourse of the Navy', 1638, and 'The Navy Ript and Ransact', c 1659, by John Hollond (fl 1624-1659) (printed in Hollond's Discourses, ed. J.R. Tanner, Navy Records Society, 1896). Also relating to politics and maritime affairs is a volume of original seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century documents compiled c 1815 by an antiquarian, William Hamper (1776-1831). Four volumes, possibly compiled for or by Josiah Burchett, Secretary to the Admiralty, ([1666]-1746), contain notes, transcripts and some original documents relating to the Navy, 1659 to 1743; they include copies of orders issued by the Admiralty and King in Council and a volume of accounts, tables and orders relating to the equipment, management and expense of maintaining the Navy, including the dockyards, c 1732. Notes and transcripts, c 1799, formerly belonging to William Locker (1731-1800) comprise two volumes; these were compiled for a history of the Navy and include some biographical sketches of naval officers. Finally, there is the log of the H.E.I.C.S. Melville Castle, 1786 to 1788.

Papers of Sir George Cockburn, relating largely to Napoleon's transportation and imprisonment in St. Helena and there is also a very detailed personal diary, 1797 to 1818. There are no papers for his later career.

Chronometer records of the Hydrographic Department, consisting of sixty-three volumes of registers, digest books, indexes, trial records and correspondence, 1821 to 1950. Issues and receipts of chronometers are registered in twenty-eight volumes, 1821 to 1936, and on a series of record cards, 1936 to 1950. Digests of chronometer repairs comprise nine volumes, 1836 to 1933; indexes to these registers and digests are contained in twelve volumes, 1820 to 1939. Other subjects include records of observations of standard mean solar clocks, 1951 to 1961 (2 vols). Single volumes include a list of contracts, c 1917 to 1918; a list of chronometers, c 1920; a departmental address book, c 1913 to 1922; a record of instruments which were not government property (including loans), 1940 to 1947; valuations and reports on second-hand instruments, 1943 to 1944. Single volumes of internal reference and communication sheets (with some external correspondence) relate to returned instruments, 1938; to those removed from departmental books, 1930 to 1939; to chronometers issued on loan, 1930 to 1937; to sales of instruments, 1932 to 1936; to those returned from service, 1937 to 1938; and to chronometers formerly belonging to Royal yachts, 1930 to 1935.

Papers of Coast Lines Ltd. They include: seven minute books of the Board and General Meetings of the parent company, 1913 to 1969. There is less information on the associated companies, although there are minutes of the General Meetings of the Belfast Steamship Company Limited, 1852 to 1943. Miscellaneous early documents include the Deed of Constitution of 1836 for the City of Cork Steam Packet Company Limited, and an agreement of 1837 between the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company and the City of Dublin and British and Irish Steam Packet companies, to the effect that the two Irish companies should not trade on overseas routes covered by the English Company. The financial records consist of: four ledgers of the Queenship Navigation Company Limited, 1899 to 1925; published accounts and balance sheets, mostly for the 1950s; a series of vessels' pro forma voyage accounts for eight companies of the group, 1965 to 1966, with a consolidated summary, traffic returns and trade figures for the main associated companies, 1955 to 1964; conference minutes and freight rates, 1871 to 1934, give an insight into the structure and operations of the Irish and English, Scottish and Irish and Belfast trades. The associate companies reported to the parent company weekly, in letter form, giving the position of their vessels and other information. Letters of this type in the collection cover the period 1955 to 1964. Otherwise there are only a few isolated letters and no letterbooks. The greater part of the collection consists of publicity material, brochures and advertisements: a large number of photographs, of ships, staff, wharves and warehouses; and draft histories of the companies making up the Group. The records of the following Coast Line associates are to he found elsewhere: the Ayr Steamship Company Ltd, the Burns and Laird Lines, and William Sloan and Company Limited at the Strathclyde Regional Archives; the Tyne Tees Steam Shipping Company Limited records at the Tyne and Wear Archives Department.

Papers of George Legge, consisting of twenty-seven volumes, partly of Dartmouth's own papers and partly of journals by his contemporaries. In the first category is the log of the ROYAL KATHERINE, 1673; the letter and order book of the Sub-Commissioners of Prizes at Portsmouth, 1672 to 1674; papers relating to Tangier, which include three letterbooks, two order books and a journal of the proceedings of Samuel Pepys and others, enquiring into the properties of the papers not directly relating to Dartmouth include a commonplace book, 1666; two logs, 1671 to 1672, 1672 to 1673, of Sir Edward Spragge; a log of the RESOLUTION, Captain Sir Thomas Allin (1612-1685), 1669 to 1670, Mediterranean; the log of the ASSISTANCE, Captain Sir Richard Munden (1640-1680), during the expedition to St Helena in 1673; a log of the SAUDADOES, Captain James Jenefer, 1672 to 1673, on a voyage to Lisbon; a log of the CENTURION, Captain Charles Wyld on a voyage conveying Sir John Finch (1626-1682), as ambassador to Constantinople, 1673 to 1674, and a log of Captain Grenvile Collins (fl 1679-1693), surveying in home waters, 1688 to 1689. There is a letterbook, 1666, of Prince Rupert and George Monck, Duke of Albemarle (1608-1670), joint Commanders-in-Chief. This was published as 'The Rupert and Monck Letterbook, 1666', ed. J R Powell and E K Timings (Navy Records Society, 1969). There are copies of the Duke of York's Sailing and Fighting Instructions, 1672 and 1673, accounts of the battle of Solebay, an account of the battle of Texel by Sir John Narbrough (1640-1688) and notes on seventeenth century naval affairs. A further volume, a 'Discourse on the state of the Navy', 1660 to 1661, by Sir Robert Slingsby (1611-1661), was presented by Mr J. Ehrman in 1951.

Papers of Sir Alexander Duff, consisting of letters received from Lord Jellicoe (1859-1935) and Sir Charles Madden (q.v.), 1916 to 1933, and a few letters from Jellicoe to Lady Duff, 1934; a series of notes and letters, 1914 to 1919, on the convoy system; papers on mercantile shipping, conferences and convoys, 1918, and some of Duff's retrospective views on convoys written in 1931 and a private diary kept between 1914 and 1916.

The three volumes, which are paged continuously from 1 to 1497 are throughout written in the autograph of Charles Alston (1683-1760), Professor of Botany from 1720-1760. The heading is "Lectures on the Materia Medica. Begun in November 1720 and since several times revised, corrected and enlarg'd. By C. A." Wide margins have been left throughout, in which later additions have been inserted. The latest date is 1754.

MSS. 5958-5963 comprise journals of A B Barton, mainly written while he was a medical officer in the service of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P & O), 1853-1858. They cover his journeys between Bombay, Singapore and Hong Kong; to the Crimea; and to the Far East. They include descriptions of the progress of the Chinese rebellion (MS. 5959), tending to and transporting the sick and wounded from Balaclava to Scutari (MS. 5960), and his shipwreck off the coast of Ceylon, together with General Henry Havelock, on the steamer Erin (MS. 5962). Some are manuscript or typescript copies. MSS. 7589-7594 comprise journals and sketches mainly relating to the Yangtse expedition, led by Captain Thomas W Blakiston, on which Barton served as a medical officer, 1861. One journal, MS. 7591, also records the end of the expedition and Barton's journey to Ceylon via Singapore, with entries on hunting expeditions in Ceylon. The journals are all fair copies. MS. 7592 comprises a narrative of the Yangste expedition read by Barton to the Royal Geographical Society, based on his journals. MS. 7593 is a series of mainly topographical illustrations relating to the expedition, comprising sketches by Barton, plus photographs and engravings based on other sketches by Barton, some of which were used to illustrate Five Months on the Yang-Tse by Thomas W Blakiston (London: John Murray, 1862). MS. 7594 comprises later papers of Brian M Gould relating to Barton and his journals, 1967 and n.d.

Two works on magic: 'The Magus or Celestial Intelligencer', 1801 and 'Directions for the invocation of spirits', and an essay on spiritual vision, 1802.

Five Prescription books, 7 Apr 1937-18 Apr 1961, written by various dispensing chemists of 37 Crawford St., Bryanston Square, London, W.1. Prices are entered for most of the prescriptions. Produced in London.

Lectures on chemistry: three sets of holograph notes of Joseph Black's lectures taken by students at Edinburgh University. Students taking the notes include the future Sir Charles Blagden (1748-1820) (MSS.1219-1227). Produced in Edinburgh.

The collection chiefly comprises material generated whilst Sir Charles Blagden was a student at Edinburgh University: notes of lectures, clinical notes of cases observed at Edinburgh Infirmary, commonplace books, dissertation drafts, lists of materia medica, etc. Also included are two papers addressed to the Royal Society, 1767-1780.

Eighteenth-century copies of Jean Bodin's work: "De abditis rerum sublimium", book 6.

Letters and papers of Martin Folkes sent to the Royal Society of London, 1745-1748 and mostly published in the Philosophical Transactions. The majority are initialled by Martin Folkes and endorsed with the dates when they were read to the Society. Partly printed. The papers cover a wide range of scientific subjects, in particular relating to natural history and biology (individual studies of mammals, fish, birds, plants, 'flora and fauna'); and a significant number re experiments involving electricity. Also: magnetism, geology, astronomy, poison, geography, chemistry - metallurgy, medicine, anatomy, and fossils. There are also some papers which pertain to Royal Society business.

A collection of material for, and drafts of, professional papers by William Brown, 1897-[1905]. Several of these works remain unpublished. The papers were concerned with: the use of animal substances for the cure of disease; urinary tests and diathesis; the history of Scottish medicine; and the history of the Medical Periodical Press.

Duplanil, docteur en médecine de la Faculté de Montpellier, etc. Quatrième édition, revu [sic] corrigé [sic] et augmenté [sic] sur la septième édition de Londres', the title-page of Vol. II is dated 'MDCCLXXVIII', that of Vol. III is correctly given as 'MDCCLXXXVIII'. In both cases 'An sept de la République' is written beneath the above dates, and is presumably the date when the MS. was copied.

'Notes du Cours de chymie de Mr. Bucquet aux Écoles de Médecine en l'année', 1777, on the cover of the first volume a late 18th cent. hand has written below the title: 'Faites par mon malheureux et ingrat enfant qui m'a plongé un poignard dans le sang qui pénétre chaque jour de plus en plus, et qui sans doute aura péri dans la traversée en passant dans les provinces en guerre contre l'Angleterre'. Produced in Paris.

Material comprises typescript papers by Buxton on anaesthesia and dentistry, and notes by Buxton on The muscles of the human body grouped according to their action, with their vascular and nervous supply, C J Manning and F H Elliot (London: H K Lewis, 1875).

Notes of lectures on chemistry taken by Aimé Marie Gaspard de Clermont-Tonnerre when a student, plus three short pieces on chemistry, 1800-1801.

Anatomy by Henry Cline and Mr. Astley Cooper, Surgeons, 1804, St. Thomas's Hospital, Southwark, London, and by Henry Cline, Junior. (Vol. I.) The second volume contains notes of lectures, extracts, receipts, and some case-records at Guy's Hospital, by the same hand. Illustrated by a few rough pen-drawn anatomical figures, etc. The first volume is lettered on the spine: 'Anatomical Notes', and 'End of the first volume' is written on the last leaf of text. The second volume is lettered 'Notes.', and appears to be a continuation of another volume now missing. Some of the notes in this second volume are dated January and February 1805. Produced in London.

Material relating to the use of nitrus oxide, chloroform and ether, mostly notes, including some on an operation carried out on Napolean III, and notes for lectures given by Clover. There is some personal material relating to Clover's education, including some family correspondence.

Notes of lectures, written by Gabriel Daubry: Commentarii in Aristotelis Physicam, Philosophiam Moralem, Oeconomicam et Politicam. The 'Physica' is illustrated by pen-drawn diagrams and figures. Text within red rules. Vol. I. Compendium philosophiae moralis (26 pp.), Commentarii in decem libris Aristotelis ad Nicomachum (752 pp.), Commentarii in Aristotelis Oeconomica et Politica (149 pp.). This volume is dated 1654. Vol. II. Compendium Physicae (23 pp.). Commentarii in Physicam (1251 pp.). Included in this are commentaries on 'De coelo et mundo' (pp. 530-600), on 'De elementis (pp. 601-658), on 'De ortu et interitu (pp. 659-757), on 'De meteoris' (pp. 758-924), on 'De anima' (pp. 926-1170), on 'De somno et vigilia' (pp. 1171-1188), 'De anima' [cont.] (pp. 1190-1251). At the end is a 'Tractatus de mundi sphaera (150 pp.) by Desperiers.

Clifford Dobell's personal papers, including protozoology drawings, his reviews of books, original plates and drawings for Dobell's scientific papers. Also, Dobell's papers relating to Giovanni Battista Grassi (1854-1925) and his claim to priority in the discovery of the mode of transmission of malaria.

Receipt books, with medical and culinary recipes plus pasted-in material including newspaper cuttings, c 1785-1860.

MSS.2208-2216 comprise notebooks and essays. MSS.2210-2211 are broader in subject than the rest of this block of material, comprising lectures in physiology; the remainder of the manuscripts in this block focus on issues of specifically tropical medicine. Kala-azar and malaria are particularly featured. MS.2208 also includes a list of birds in Dunduan. MSS.5692-5697 consist of illustrative material (primarily water-colours from microscope slides relating to tropical parasitic diseases), correspondence, cuttings and offprints, and miscellaneous other papers relating to Donovan's work on tropical medicine.

Three note-books by an unidentified naturalist, containing records of insects observed, 1878-1914.

An Essay on the motions of the iris, and the power of adapting the eye to objects at different distances illustrated by a few pen-drawn diagrams. Pasted on the verso of the first end-paper of Vol. I is a small label 'Bound by J. McLaren, Glasgow.'

Student notes taken from Nicolas Fournier's teaching on materia medica, 1744-1752.

Traduit du latin et de l'italien par G.G., Interprète juré des langues orientales', with other extracts and receipts from alchemical and medical authors. The third volume contains 37 full-page symbolic alchemical water-colour drawings with 68 figures (pp. 304-369): there are two symbolic diagrams in red and black on p. 190 and illustrations of alchemical apparatus on pp. 419, 430, 547. These three MSS. have been tentatively dated c 1765, as on the fly-leaf of Vol. II is an inscription: '1762. 16 aout. Tome 2ème'. Below this is the date 1785, but by the script, they seem to have been written consecutively within a few years.

Notes from lectures in physiology given by John Haighton including notes on physiology produced in London by a student at St Thomas's Hospital and lectures on physiology or the laws of the animal oeconomy, taken down by Thomas Howell, Guy's Hospital 1810.

Robert Hooper papers, [1820-1825], comprising: inter-leaved copies of his 'Anatomical plates of the bones and muscles diminished from Albinus'. Third edition. London: J. Murray 1807. And 'Anatomical plates of the thoracic and abdominal viscera' ... Third edition, London: J. Murray, 1809. The first with holograph [?] MS. additions and illustrations on the Brain: the second with similar additions on the Organs of Generation. In the first volume there are 12 ll. in MS., and 38 large and small pen-drawn coloured drawings of the brain, etc., and one uncoloured. In the second volume there are 10 ll. in MS., and two roughly drawn anatomical illustrations. The script closely resembles that of Robert Hooper, and it is possible that these two volumes were his own copies with holograph additions, which were later revised and expanded into two works published later. These were: 'The morbid anatomy of the human brain', published in 1826, and 'The morbid anatomy of the human uterus', published in 1832. Produced in London.

Holograph MSS of Louis Lepecq de la Cloture entitled 'Première section: faisant la suite de la seconde partie de la 'Collection d'observations sur les maladies et constitutions épidémiques, comprenant les observations météorologiques faites à Rouen depuis 1777 jusques en 1789. Suite de la seconde section sur les constitutions médicales'. Lettered on the spines 'Maladies épidémiques Vol. III, Vol. IV'. The second volume is apparently unfinished. Produced in Rouen.

The collection comprises lectures on scientific subjects delivered by Lillie at the Mechanics' Institutes of Launceston and Hobart, Tasmania.

Collection of cookery, medical, veterinary, and domestic receipts, 1748. The first volume contains cookery receipts, and is in two parts each with an index. The second volume contains 'Physical receits', 'Cattle receits', and 'Curious receits': each of these has its own index.

The collection has two main themes: tropical medical work in West Africa, and swamp fever in horses (the latter relating to work carried out in Winnipeg, Canada).

Collection of medical receipts and remedies with several indexes. On p. 6 of Vol. I is the date 1726, but there are additions by other hands, one of which on p. 528 of Vol. II is dated 1784. In Vol. II, paginated 511-514, is a printed 'Propriétez de l'élixir de M. Garrus médecin', probably contemporary with the MS.
