Papers of William Gelder including letters from Gelder to his parents in Wakefield, while a dispensing and visiting assistant to [R Lucie] Reed, surgeon, at Whitechapel Road, London, Mar-Nov 1832, and while in Edinburgh in the employ of Mr Cope, a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist and druggist, Mar-Aug 1834. Notebook begun by Gelder in Edinburgh in 1834, and continued on a tour through Lancashire, the Isle of Man, Ireland and Wales in 1835, and in trade in Yorkshire, 1836-1837. Containing verses, commonplaces, orders for medicines and other goods, and miscellaneous notes. Signature inside front cover, 'William Gelder, Apothecaries' Hall, Edinbro, 1834.' On the rear end-papers is a coloured engraving of Apothecaries Hall.

Correspondence and papers of Roy Lee Moodie including letters to Moodie from various correspondents, especially in the United States, mainly concerning palaeopathology, 1907-1932; correspondence of Moodie on particular topics, 1926-1933; 'Palaeopathology II. A record of the evidences of disease and injury from the earliest times down to recorded history. By Roy Lee Moodie, Ph.D., palaeopathologist to the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum.' Papers and photographs intended for a multi-volumed work developing upon his Palaeopathology (Urbana, 1923) and catalogue by [Ale] Hrdlicka (1869-1943) of pathological material from prehistoric cemeteries of Peru, in the San Diego Museum of Anthropology, together with a paper by Moodie on 'pathological limb bones from pre-Columbian Peru.'

Notes on surgical lectures [given in London] by Henry Cline, and taken by an unnamed student. The text, neatly written in a uniform hand, is possibly a fair copy of notes taken at an earlier date. Dated watermarks are partially visible on the outer margin of leaves (e.g. MS. 6009, f. 98, where the date 1821 seems discernible).

Journal and papers of William Hoffman, including Congo journal (at the rear of the volume (separately paginated 1-19) is an incomplete journal of the Emin Pasha expedition, 1887) and papers written by Hoffman, mainly autobiographical memoirs of his African travels.

Correspondence and papers of David Urquhart, 1821-1892, with associated family letters. Urquhart's correspondence gives details of the Turkish Bath in Jermyn Street, which he helped to establish (1860-1861), and his involvement with other similar institutions. Correspondence of Harriet Angelina Urquhart, largely on literary and religious topics.

Records of Ticehurst House Hospital, 1787-1975. Records of private asylums have had an extremely poor survival rate compared with those in the public sector, which have had the benefits of statutory protection and a greater measure of continuity. The Ticehurst House records, however, are unusually well preserved, and some of the more important series in its archive are remarkably complete. No central management or Board minutes for the asylum have been traced, and may not have been kept prior to 1918 given the informal management of the institution at that time by the Newington family. However the various categories of records kept in accordance with the lunacy legislation, including a remarkable series of casebooks, are well preserved, especially for the period 1845-1948. The Hospital and its General Manager are therefore greatly to be thanked for making these records available for research.

Correspondence of William Thomas Brande, 1825-1878, with some letters by his son, William T.C. Brande. Brande's advice on chemistry was sought by many of the correspondents in this small collection. They include Timothy Bramah on experiments relating to minting coin, Samuel Brown (1776-1852) on metal used in lighthouse construction; Frederick Richard Lees (1815-1897) on distillation of alcohol; Thomas William Clinton Murdoch (1809-1891) on fumigating 'coolie labour' aboard ship; and John Morillyon Wilson (1783-1868) on the danger of tobacco smoke to teeth. Other letters refer to publications and Royal Institution matters and Brande's own health.

Letters and papers of James Ormiston McWilliam, 1839-1862. The letters to McWilliam show the interest generated by his investigations into contagious diseases such as yellow fever, and his subsequent official reports. Other contemporary naval issues form a major part of the subject-matter, especially the working conditions and status of assistant surgeons, on whose behalf McWilliam campaigned.

Tapes and transcripts of interviews conducted in 1988 by Sam Sussman with three Nottingham psychiatrists (A.D. Douglas, E.D. Oram and A. Minto). Mr. Sussman's intention had been to produce a history of psychiatric treatment in the U.K. through the eyes of its practitioners similar to the one he had already produced on Canada; copies of this work (Pioneers of Mental Health and Social Change by Djuwe Joe Blom and Sam Sussman, Third Eye, London Canada, 1989) are also included in this collection. A.D. Douglas and E.D. Oram of Saxondale Hospital were interviewed first; the recordings were typed up and subsequently corrected and slightly amended, evidently in preparation for the publication. The interviewees discuss their training and experiences as psychiatrists and the changes in the profession from the 1940's and 1950's. The Wellcome Library subsequently received cassettes of those interviews, as well as a cassette and transcript of a similar interview with Dr Alfred Minto of Nottingham.

Transcripts of discussions between paediatricians and psychoanalysts from various London hospitals, 1975-1977, with memorabilia of David Morris, FRCP (1915-1989).

Papers of Bernard Lewis Williams, 1942-1945, including case book containing patient records, with enclosed memorabilia; the case-book is described by Mr Williams as `my private record of cases of special interest concerning which I requested follow-up information', but was continued for another two months after his departure from the unit.

Follow-up cards for most of the cases were attached to the relevant pages of the volume. For conservation reasons, these and the other enclosures have been removed to separate folders (GC/172/2-3).

Mr Williams also allowed copies to be made of text and photographs from a scrapbook which he had put together of his service with No 6 Field Surgical Unit (FSU), and of loose photographs, including transparencies.

Letters to Mary Scharlieb, and testimonials about her, 1890-1912, [n.d.], and 3 letters from her, 1909-1923, on medical, philanthropic, political (women's suffrage) and personal matters. The testimonials are from Sir Frederick Treves, Sir James Paget, and Henry Acland, and correspondents include Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Dorothea Beale, Mary Kingsley, Sarah Grand, Michael Foster, Lord Roberts, and Philip Gibbs. The Herbert Scharlieb items consist mainly of testimonials when applying for the post of Assistant Anaesthetist at the Dental Hospital, 1901, including from J Rose Bradford, H Charlton Bastian, Rickman J Godlee, and Victor Horsley, but there is also a letter to him from his mother while in Madras, 1884, and one from Marcus Beck about the University College Athletic Fund, 1892.

It also includes a short typescript biography of Catt and a photocopy of a press cutting photograph of Catt (from Time magazine, 14 Jun 1926).
