This microfilm collection of correspondence documents the experiences of Julius Bloch and family and friends, some of whom managed to escape Nazi occupied Europe, and others, who did not. The papers include correspondence from his brother in Gurs concentration camp in the French Pyrénees, where he died.

This collection deals with a law suit brought by the Osram company, against a former employee, Ernst Schaefer, before the Reichsverwaltungsgericht, Berlin, 1941. The gist of the ruling is that in light of a new law affecting Jewish World War One veterans (29 December 1938) the firm was justified in terminating a previous agreement in which Schaefer was to receive a pension and other benefits.

Covering letters addressed to the Wiener Library, a copy of the court's finding and Ernst Schaefer's comments. Included are four copies of the above documentation.

Papers on missions in Madagascar, 1864-1971 (some undated), largely dating from the mid-20th century, possibly collected by Margaret Burke and including some of her own papers, comprising various printed articles, typescripts, manuscript papers, and correspondence, on evangelistic and educational missionary work by the London Missionary Society and Friends Service Council (including its predecessor the Friends Foreign Mission Association) and on local customs, including undated photographs [1920s] of missionaries, indigenous inhabitants and local scenes.

They include published newsletters (1913-1938) from Ebenezer and Mabel Mann, detailing their work in Kansu province, China; parts of a typescript work by Ebenezer Mann relating to his years in China; autobiographical notes made by Mabel Mann; and a small collection of photographs of China including photographs (1920-1921) of the aftermath of the earthquake in Lanchow, Kansu province. Papers, 1933-1989, of David Lloyd Francis, comprising his diaries (1943, 1947-8) and correspondence concerning his work with the Melanesian Mission, the effects of the War on the Mission's work and his own work during this period. Later correspondence with the BBC is also included.

Five notebooks containing the memoirs of James Sibree, 1836-1879, 1913-1926, recording his early life in Hull, family history, training at Spring Hill, missionary work in Madagascar and in Vizagapatam, India, with the London Missionary Society, and his later years.

Sound recordings and papers relating to the radio series 'India: A People Partitioned', 1997. Cassette tapes of interviews (83 tapes) and partial transcripts concern the social history of partition between India and Pakistan (1947) and its effect on people in south Asia. Interviewees included some prominent political and cultural figures, but also 'ordinary' people whose lives were affected by the events surrounding independence, including the large number of refugees created. The subjects discussed include Communism, politicians including Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Muslim League, Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus. Cassette tapes of the five broadcast programmes (3 tapes) are also included: 'The Gathering of the Storm', on the context of partition, disturbances in 1946, and Gandhi's attempts to broker peace; 'The Killing Fields of Punjab', examining partition violence; ' Tearing the Veil', on women's experiences, including abduction; 'Comers and Goers', concerning the experiences of Muslims in India and their dilemma as to whether to migrate to Pakistan or remain in India; 'Unfinished Business', on the Kashmir dispute and the continuing legacy of partition in regional politics, culture and diplomacy. The partial transcripts were made for working purposes and are an indication rather than a definitive record of the contents of the tapes. Appended to the transcripts are copies of an occasional series of articles written by Andrew Whitehead for the Indian Express based on the material he gathered. An additional deposit comprises a cassette tape of the revised programme, 'Unfinished Business', 2000, and six further interview tapes, the interviewees including key participants in India-Pakistan relations, with notes on the contents of the interviews compiled for working purposes.

Letters, diaries, drafts of published works, papers and photographs, 1917-1980, of William Gawan Sewell, relating largely to his time in China. Material on the West China Union University includes histories, brochures, detailed descriptions, plans and photographs.

Other material comprises field notes on the remnants of Asma'u's disciples, the Yan Taru, 1973-1990; papers on the milieu in which Asma'u lived in Gobir, c1900-1984, including Gobir chiefs; papers, including press cuttings, on the situation of women in northern Nigeria in the 1980s, the subjects including Muslims, prostitution, women's organizations, medical matters, and women's education.

Papers, 1903-1992, including articles, reports and press cuttings, on Sokoto relate to geological history, prehistory, palaeontology, archaeology, pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial history, the subjects including the social and economic history of the city of Sokoto, colonial administration, British fears over Mahdism, and local government and economic issues in Sokoto state in modern Nigeria.

Three volumes contain over 500 postcards, many in colour, relating to Nigeria, including images of people, cultural events, various places, and other aspects of Nigerian life [late 20th century].

Papers, c1910-1983, of Abraham Nahum Stencl, relating to his life and work and to modern Yiddish literature, and comprising papers relating to his life, 1934-1978, including letters received from his family, photographs, press cuttings relating to his life and work, and personal documents; manuscript and printed writings, 1930-1980, in verse and prose, including some autobiographical and works on literature; papers, 1918-1983, largely dating from the 1940s and after, relating to Loshn un Lebn and the Friends of Yiddish circle, other friends and acquaintances, Jewish organisations, and Stencl's involvement in literary events, comprising letters received and other papers, including works by other authors, of over 200 correspondents, some of them annotated by Stencl; ephemera, c1910-1982, accumulated by Stencl, including postcards, membership cards, receipts, tickets, greeting cards, circulars, advertisements, and flyers.

Papers and correspondence, 1949-1991, of Andrew Hake, accumulated during the course of his career in Kenya as an industrial missionary. The papers reflect the diversity of his work and interest in the urban and industrial community in Nairobi. The collection also includes publications collected by Hake, including Kenyan government publications and publications of the National Christian Council of Kenya.

Papers, 1953-1986, dating predominantly from the 1960s and 1970s, on Melanesian culture, government and geography and the work of the church in the New Hebrides, collected by the Rt Rev Derek Rawcliffe.

Papers, 1827-1995, of James Hardyman, comprising writings in the form of published articles, press cuttings, typescripts, manuscripts and notes and correspondence relating to his interests in Malagasy history and culture and to his missionary work with the London Missionary Society. Also including photographs, postcards, illustrations, prints, engravings and sketches relating to Madagascar, and a collection of maps.

Papers, 1870-1914, of Roland Lyon Nosworthy Michell, including his diaries, 1872, 1873, 1878, journals, 1870-1872, 1874-1876, and correspondence, 1878-1914, together with research material for his publications, including notes on the Dervish sects, of which he had a first hand knowledge.

The records of this collection fall into two related groups: the records of three Huguenot families who came to England between 1685 and 1690 (ACC/2079/A-C); and the records of several successive firms of solicitors in which one of the descendants of those Huguenot families, P A Hanrott, worked (ACC/2079/D-F).

The collection is of interest for the study of Huguenot families, and contains a good deal of genealogical information (see for example the Gascherie family tree in AC/2079/A/1/24). Papers of the Gascherie and Chesneau families are arranged in four groups. The first group is the largest and consists of documents relating to a legal action brought by Madeleine Gashry on behalf of her mother Suzanne Gascherie, widow of Francois Gashry (see ACC/2079/B1), in La Rochelle to reclaim lands inherited by more distant relations on the death of her sister, Suzanne Gashry (Gascherie) in November 1762. The case required extensive proof of family relationships and copies of baptism, marriage and burial register entries were produced, as well as wills and marriage contracts and other legal documents relating to the lands in question (ACC/2079/A1/003-036). The case was conducted by agents in La Rochelle as Madeleine Gashry and her mother were in Amsterdam and The Hague at the time (ACC/2079/A1/001-002). Although these records partly relate to the Gashry family, they chiefly refer to lands held by Estienne Gascherie, Suzanne Chesneau, his wife and the inherited title of their daughter, Suzanne Gascherie, widow of Francois Gashry. Other records of the Gashry family are listed in section B.

The second group consists of other papers of Estienne and Suzanne Gascherie, including receipts for soldiers billetted on them in La Rochelle in 1685 (ACC/2079/A2/001) and a bond concerning a ship which may have been used to bring Estienne Gascherie to England (ACC/2079/A2/002).

The third group represents the papers of Brigadier Paul de la Gascherie, son of Estienne and Suzanne Gascherie, whose invention concerning sails and keels of ships won him a pension from the Estates General of the Netherlands (ACC/2079/A3/001). He worked all over Europe fitting his invention to ships of various fleets. He went to Moscow and Poland (ACC/2079/A3/016-025) and was in Portugal at the time of the Lisbon earthquake (ACC/2079/A3/008).

The fourth group of papers relates to the Chesneau family, principally the parents of Estienne Gascherie's wife, Suzanne Chesneau. They were French Protestants, and it would seem that Suzanne's father was imprisoned (if not even sentenced to death) during anti-protestant feeling in 1656 (ACC/2079/A4/001). This may explain the context of the exhortation written by Suzanne's mother to both her children, encouraging them to stand firm in the Protestant faith (ACC/2079/A4/003).

The records of the Archbishop of York's estates are interesting for a study of development of the Battersea and Wandsworth areas. The arrangement of the documents reflects these four aspects of their work. ACC/2079/F1 consists of general documents relating to the sale of the Battersea estates, the original deeds, precedents for the Archbishop's tenure of the estates, schedules of deeds and leases, and correspondence relating to more than one property. ACC/2079/F2 consists of documents relating to the Battersea and Wandsworth estates arranged alphabetically by tenant, as the holdings are not described fully enough to arrange them topographically. ACC/2079/F3 refers to the purchase of estates in Bishopthorpe and ACC/2079/F4 to the purchase of Lord Petre's house in Grosvenor Square.

There are also several items in the collection which do not appear to have any connection with the families or the solicitors' firms (ACC/2079/G). P A Hanrott collected a large library, and it is possible that these records were also collected by him.

Personal diaries of John Thornton, merchant and member of the Clapham Sect. One journal has entries only on Sundays and records religious thoughts; while the others provide a record of daily events (including business, charitable activities and social events) interspersed with religious musings. Also drawing of the coat of arms of Lord Slane, described as an ancestor of the Thorntons.

The Sandhurst examination marks from 1913 (ACC/2360/005) appear to have no connection with the journals and the coat of arms.

Records of the United Synagogue's Head Office, including minutes, agendas, presented papers, printed annual reports and accounts, byelaws and standing orders, papers relating to property, letter books and correspondence, financial accounts, insurance papers, membership papers, records relating to staff, administrative records, photographs, press cuttings, orders of service, Aubrey Newman's files, and papers relating to Soviet Jewry. This material has been catalogued in 20 sub-fonds (ACC/2712/01 to ACC/2712/20).

Also included in this collection are records of the individual member synagogues; these comprise mainly membership records, but there are also administrative and financial records for some synagogues. Records of bodies connected with the United Synagogue to a greater or lesser extent are also included in this collection, such as the Office of the Chief Rabbi, London Beth Din and Beth Hamedrash, the Kashrut Commission and various Jewish friendly societies and charities. The United Synagogue's close links with Anglo-Jewish education are also represented in the collection, including records of individual schools such as the Jews' Free School.
