The papers of Edward Montagu, the first Earl, consist of five volumes containing papers relating to his political career 1656-1669. The papers of John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich, consist of five volumes of appointment books, 1771 to 1782, purchased from the Montagu family in 1957 and transcripts. In 1956 and 1960 the Secretary of the Navy Records Society deposited on loan transcripts of Sandwich's papers, 1771 to 1782, not included in the Society's publication. The Heritage Lottery Fund has supported the purchase of additions to this collection.

Papers relating to Alexander Monro secundus, 1776-1784, comprising a 2 volumes of manuscript notes titled Lectures of Surgery by Alexander Monro MD, Professor of Anatomy and Surgery in the University of Edinburgh; transcribed from the copy of his lectures as taken down in short hand by Mr Thorburn in the year 1776. With additional abbreviations delivered during the years 1781-2-3 and 4 by James Curry, both containing a pen and ink portrait of Monro, and covering topics such as teeth, sutures, lithotomy, caesarean section, spinal injuries, ranula, trepanning, cupping, and inoculation.

Records of the Monro family of Hadley, comprising the family correspondence-it is almost entirely correspondence-of the Monro family, about 1775 to 1905. (The one 1905 letter is an exception; most of the correspondence ends in the 1880's.) During most of the period the family lived at Hadley. They were gentry, descended from the Monro family of Foulis, baronets; but the sort of gentry who earned their livings in the law, in the East India service, etc., rather than being landed gentry. There are three boxes. One box contains the earlier correspondence, mainly from various members of the family. A good deal of it is from overseas, especially India.

There is an attractive grant of arms by Lyon, 1787, to Henry Knight Erskine, esq., and a most competent copy, 1862, of an achievement in full colour of the arms of Doctor Alexander Monro, Principal of the College of Edinburgh, by Henry Frazer, herald and painter, 1687. An unusual document is a passport, 1820, issued by the maire of Lisieux for Cecil Monro of Hadley ('sans profession').

There is quite a batch of letters from James Monro (cb. 1806) who seems to have been captain of an East Indiaman. He was master of the 'Houghton', the command of which he eventually sold for 8,000. There is also a printed pedigree of the Monro's, beginning with John Monro, MD, as part of a pedigree of Smith, baronets, of Hadley; a note on the envelope indicates that this is by Montagu Burrows (who appears to have been a relation).

The other two boxes consist entirely of the correspondence of Cecil J Monro, beginning with his earliest letters home from school and continuing for about fifty years. He went to Harrow and Cambridge, and corresponded with many more or less eminent people. His circle of correspondents included many who were in touch with public life and public affairs or with literary or scientific circles. His career is uncertain. He does not appear to have been a practising barrister, yet he obviously knew a great deal of law. There is much correspondence with Clement Mansfield Ingleby, Shakespearian scholar. Amongst other correspondents are W.J. Prowse, journalist and humourist. One of his friends, Litchfield, seems to have been Darwin's son-in-law. His brother was a barrister, as also had been his father.

Inscription states that this stamp was engraved by 'Alma-Tadema's best Engraver', and belonged to K H Monk.

The first volume has a title pasted down on the spine, inscribed: 'Lezioni Anatomiche Mondiniane', a reference perhaps to Carlo Mondini [1729-1803], or to his son Francesco who both lectured at Bologna. 'Prof. Calori' is inscribed in pencil on the fly-leaf of Vol. 1. Produced in Bologna.

Manuscript 'Notes relatives à la station de la cote d'Afrique. Gorée. July 1820', partly written by Alphonse Louis Théodore Moges, Comte de Moges, and comprising an account of the French colony of Senegal, with special reference to Gorée Island and Albréda, their products, inhabitants and trade. Particular attention is given to the slave trade, and means of suppressing it are suggested. The author makes his observations after a two-year sojourn in the area begun, therefore, soon after Gorée had been restored to France in 1816. He passes antagonistic comments on the English and their trade. The first two paragraphs and the corrections throughout are in the hand of the signatory, Alphonse de Moges; the remainder of the manuscript is in another hand.

The bulk of the records comprises correspondence, covering all aspects of MPT's organisation including discussion with publishers, printers and distributors; decisions on the content of future issues and work by guest editors; correspondence with translators on specific projects and the general theory of translation; and many letters from translators offering their services, demonstrating the wave of enthusiasm of which MPT was part. The first series of correspondence, covering 1961 to 1984, relates to issues 1-6 (1965-1969, when MPT was published by Cape Golliard) and includes files on particular countries and related translators; organisations including the Arts Council and Gulbenkian Foundation; individuals including Ted Hughes and his involvement with MPT; distribution in Britain and America. Subsequent deposits relate largely to the revival of MPT from 1992 and include papers on MPT, 1978-2000, among them translations, correspondence, reviews, biographical information and ephemera; papers relating to Poetry World after its launch in 1986; files relating to new series issues of MPT, comprising correspondence and translations; printed material including issues 1 and 2 of the new series, 1992; and working papers of Professor Norma Rinsler, 1993-1994 and undated, relating to the MPT new series and the Second International Poets Festival in Jerusalem, 1993, and including typescript poems and information on poets.

Currently, the bulk of this material falls within the period 1925-50, although the period covered varies considerably according to subject. The copy correspondence and papers in this collection document the systematic theft of Jewish property following the ransacking of Jewish lodges, libraries and archives; the subsequent confiscation of all art works in Jewish hands throughout Europe and their dispatch to Germany in special trains; and the plunder of the homes of Jews deported to the East collectively known in Germany as 'Möbelaktion'.

Papers of Professor David Mitrany, [1920-1965], mainly comprising research papers and drafts of published works, notably articles, notes, lecture notes, reviews and index cards relating to international organisation, political science, international relations, functionalism, international law and economics, human rights, federalism and nationalism, as well as material concerning the League of Nations, the United Nations, and peace aims post World War Two; reference material compiled by Mitrany, including bibliographies and working papers; drafts, proofs and offprints of published books and articles, mainly concerning international government; personal correspondence and papers relating to his academic and journalistic work, notably regarding Yale University, the Manchester Guardian, Political and Economic Planning, and work during World War One and World War Two.

These records relate mostly to the estates of the Mitchison family and their relations in Middlesex, London, Northumberland, Surrey and elsewhere, which were managed by William Anthony Mitchison, the elder, on behalf of his father John Mitchison, the elder, his brother John Mitchison, the younger, and himself in the mid and late nineteenth century. The remainder of the accession is composed of private papers of members of the Mitchison family. These are generally draft marriage settlements, drafts wills, and draft executors' papers. There are also some papers relating to trusts and shares. The private papers of John Mitchison the younger include, besides papers relating to the inquiry into his state of mind, transcripts of accounts of his estate from 1856-99, and records relating to his establishment in Brighton.

This accession was originally composed of forty bundles, bearing solicitors' numbering on the wrapper, where these remained. Most also bore labels giving a rough summary of the contents-not always correct-the sectors' number and a title assigning it to a member of the Mitchison, Maw or Sturges family (ref: ACC/1156/154). These have been used as sectional headings in the catalogue, and where the label does not survive, or is defective, the bundle has been assigned to the member of the family who from the contents, seems likely to have been the original assignee. In a few cases, new titles have had to be substituted, as in 178, 191-3. Inside each bundle was one or more bundles which form the basic unit of this list. A corresponding list of the original larger bundles with the new numbering of the inner bundles is appended. Bundles 807, 813 and 868 appear to be incomplete. The contents of the bundles are largely draft deeds, mostly leases and affidavits, and correspondence. As solicitors' drafts, the information given in the draft affidavits is on occasions contradictory or misleading. There are a few original deeds, inducing a small number of conveyances. In several bundles, stamps are missing from correspondence.
