Miscellaneous manuscript notes on ancient history and classical literature.

Documents relating to the career of John Thomas Graves: certificate of admittance to the Inner Temple, 1827, and later correspondence, 1922; warrants from the Poor Law Commission appointing him an assistant Poor Law Commissioner, 1846, and a poor-law inspector, 1847.

Manuscript notes on historical subjects, with some letters and press cuttings.

The collection comprises letters to James Loch and other members of his family. Many of the letters concern the founding and early management of University College London, then known as London University, and matters relating to the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Manuscript volume, early 15th century, 'Das Büchlein vom schauenden und vom wirkenden Leben', bearing on the inside front cover 'Homiliensammlung, 14 Jh', but the contents comprise not merely a collection of homilies, but a complete text discussing the active and contemplative life, as exemplified by Martha and Mary, and include quotations from the New Testament and other religious texts. The original manuscript of the treatise, of which this is apparently a later and hastily written copy, was apparently written in Paris (f 2v), possibly by a disciple of Meister Eckhart, since it includes a number of quotations from him. A parchment book-guard in the centre of quires 1 and 2 bears Latin text in a 13th-century hand.

Manuscript volume, dated 1488: Mystische Traktate (mystical treatises). Possibly two originally independent manuscripts bound together. Book-guards consist of strips of parchment bearing text in a 14th century script.

Gebetbuch (Book of Prayers), early 15th century.

Gebetbuch (Book of Prayers), c1521, including prayers to the Virgin (one in verse) and to St Catherine. Preceded by a calendar, including tables for the Golden Number and a table of signs of the zodiac.

Gebetbuch (Book of Prayers), 1466, including visitation of the sick, administration of the Last Sacrament, and burial of the dead.

Manuscript volume, 15th century, containing a German translation of Guido Delle Colonne, 'Historia Troiana and Alexander Der Grosse' (history of Troy and Alexander the Great, ff 1r-97v and 98r-154v respectively). The binding bears on the back: Romances. M.S.

The binding includes strips of parchment from manuscripts of the 13th century and 1320.

Manuscript volume, 15th century, containing astronomical and religious treatises, preceded by calendar. Includes astrological treatises, prayers and Latin rhymes. At least some portions of the manuscript were written by a scribe, A D (perhaps Antonius de Meer), at Hertogenbosch in Brabant. Tables and diagrams throughout, some coloured, some with adjustable portions. Coloured ink drawing on folio 11v. Other inserts pasted in, possibly woodcut illustrations, have been removed. One entry on folio 183v is dated 1489.

Manuscript volume, 1532, containing St Bonaventure's 'Legenda Beatissimi patris nostri Francisci' (Life of St Francis). The pastedowns are two leaves of a 12th-century homiliary.

Manuscript volume, 15th century, containing Bartholomew of Pisa's 'De Conformitate Vitae Sancti Francisci Ad Vitam Domini Jesu Christi' (On the conformity of the life of Saint Francis to the life of our Lord Jesus Christ) and lists of privileges etc granted to the Friars Minor (Franciscans), extracted from papal registers by Marcus Trevisanus, minister of the Roman province. The list is dated 1418 in the rubric on folio 313v.

Italian Book of Hours, c1470-1480, beginning Officium Beatae Mariae Virginis (office of the Blessed Virgin Mary). Originally 106(?) leaves, with 19th-century additions: full page colour illustrations and decorated borders, including a Crucifixion, added by Caleb W Wing.

Manuscript volume, 15th century, containing a treatise on meteorology, attributed to Aristotle: Breve ac perutile Philosophiae naturalis commentum incipit Foeliciter. Quantum igitur ad primum praemitto illud Aristotelis in principio Methaurorum. Necesse est ... causa refluxus maris. Bound with a printed work: Sphaera Mundi, by Johannes De Sacro Bosco (Venice, 1478).

Manuscript volume, 13th century: Vitae Sanctorum et Sermones, containing saints' lives, notes on festivals, and sermons for saints' days.

Manuscript volume, 15th or 16th century, containing the 'Perspectiva Communis' of John Peckham, in three parts, beginning 'Inter philosophie consideracionis studia ... '. Bound (perhaps from the first) with two printed works, the Arithmetica of Jordanus Nemorarius, edited by Jacques le Fêvre (Johannes Higman and Wolfgang Hopyl, Paris, 1496), and the Geometria speculatiua of Bradwardine (Paris, 1495).

Manuscript volume, 15th century: De raptu anime Tundali et visione. Pasted to the inside front cover is a full-page colour illustration of Tundal presenting his manuscript to Pope Eugenius, inscribed: Tondali Visione Eugenio Papae Oblata. Folio 1r bears a fragment of another text, in the same hand, as this manuscript was formerly part of a larger manuscript.

Glass slides illustrating the history of printing presses from 15th century Europe onwards, collected from various sources by Albert Hugh Smith and Arthur Brown for use in a proposed illustrated work which was never completed. The slides may date from between the 1940s and the 1960s, when both Smith and Brown were employed at University College London.

The UCL College Archives are comprised of material charting the history of the university, from its establishment in 1826 to the present day. Most of the collection consists of material created in the day-to-day running of the institution and includes records such as foundation deeds and papers, committee minutes, administrative correspondence, department records and reports, early student society/association papers, staff and student files, building plans and maps, artwork and photographs.

Correspondence and papers created by William Baly and his family; Francis Baly, his mother, William Baly, his father, Frances (Fanny) Shipp, nee Baly, and Elizabeth (Bessy) Baly, his sisters, 1807-1878. Includes correspondence between Baly and members of his family and friends, and between members of his family about Baly, spanning Baly's life and career. Also includes papers, notes and correspondence relating to Baly's professional career, his years as a student in London and then in France and Germany, 1831-36; his various appointments, from his early apprenticeship to a general practitioner in 1828 to his appointment as physician extraordinary to the Queen in 1859, such as indentures detailing appointments and a volume of testimonials supporting Baly's appointment as Assistant Physician at St Bartholomew's Hospital, 1854; his licence and diploma for the Royal College of Physicians; a portrait of Baly by one of his sisters; photographs; obituaries; material relating to the Baly Memorial Fund; and genealogical notes on the Baly family.
