The first volume is illustrated by many inserted pen-drawn astronomical and other diagrams and figures: the second by three anatomical drawings of the cerebrum, the internal organs of a man, and of the eye. Vol. I. 'De corporibus inanimatis': Vol. II. 'De viventibus'. At the end of Vol. I is the inscription 'Proeunte D. Josepho Cyrillo haec anno aere vulgaris 1776 scripsi ego Januarius Pelliccia in Seminario Aversano'. Produced in Aversa.

Commonplace books containing extracts on many subjects. The compiler may possibly have been a Quaker or Nonconformist, as there are many quotations from such authorities. By a comparison of the dates of the many works quoted-which are mainly by Dissenters, Baptists, etc., these volumes seem to have been compiled not long after 1660.

At the end of the text of Vol. V. (p. 577) is an inscription by Gillet. 'Finis totius philosophiae die 29a jullii [sic] anno Domini 1758, sub illustrissimo Domino proffessore [sic] regio jacobo roberto correntino Corroller sacrae facultatis parisiensis bacalaurio theologo, ex urbe episcopali Quimper Correntin, in brittannia [sic] minori. Has lectiones philosophicas audivit joannes franciscus Gillet Lugdunensis in scholis academicis seminarii sancti iraenei [sic]. Lugdunensis a lu[per] calibus anni millesimi septingentesimi quinquagesimi sexti ad inducias usque academicas anni millesimi septingentesimi quinquagesimi octavi'. After 7 ll. of diagrams, etc., he adds: 'Il manqueroit quelque chose à ce cours de philosophie si je n'y adjoutois la chanson que j'ai faite sur ma sortie du Séminaire'. Personal correspondence and papers of Baron Ernst von Feuchtersleben, mainly relating to medical topics and to the Faculty of Medicine in Vienna, 1826-1858. The papers are mainly copies of medical texts with mansuscript annotations and copies of medical essays by him - some unpublished. Also, his case book 1836-1842. The records often relate to the Viennese Medical Faculty, his interest in medical education, and addresses given by him. The correspondence is primarily from medical colleagues in Austria and Germany.

Two volumes entitled 'Collectio plantarum nostratum et pro parte exoticarum quae in statu vivo et naturali depictae sunt' containing in all 200 water-colour drawings of plants, with description in Latin, made by Josef Foerchtl 'Pharmacopoeus' of Cologne, with his signature on a fly-leaf in each volume. Produced in Cologne.

'Recueil de divers secrets rares et éprouvés concernant la Chymie, l'Alchymie, la Médecine, la Philosophie Hermétique, le tout tiré des plus célèbres Médecins et Artistes de l'Europe. Traduit du latin et de l'italien par G.G., Interprète juré des langues orientales', with other extracts and receipts from alchemical and medical authors. The third volume contains 37 full-page symbolic alchemical water-colour drawings with 68 figures (pp. 304-369): there are two symbolic diagrams in red and black on p. 190 and illustrations of alchemical apparatus on pp. 419, 430, 547. These three MSS. have been tentatively dated c 1765, as on the fly-leaf of Vol. II is an inscription: '1762. 16 aout. Tome 2ème'. Below this is the date 1785, but by the script, they seem to have been written consecutively within a few years.

Book by Sir John Jacob Hansler entitled Dyspepsia. Or the Autobiography of an Invalid. Containing many singular Adventures and Providential Escapes during an eventful life, interspersed with a Variety of Original Anecdotes, useful Information, Medical Recipes from some of the first Galens of the late and the most celebrated Esculapians of the present Day-the whole compiled with an earnest Desire to promote Health and Longevity. As well as Truth and Amusement ... In two Volumes. Mainly holograph, but with passages written by another hand, probably that of a lady. The latest date found in the text is 1837, and the diary proper seems to end in 1835, having been begun in about 1808. The book is dedicated to H.R.H. Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex [1773-1843], and was apparently prepared for the press, but no record of its publication has been traced.

Two commonplace books, 1730, 1732-1742.

Volume 1: with extracts from Sir William Temple and George Cheyne on health, 'The British Heroes, or, a new Poem in honour of St. George' by Mr John Grub, Schoolmaster of Christ Church, Oxon, etc.

Volume 2: Strange events, accidents and phenomena: with other historical occurrences worth observation, pp 63-72 'Paradoxes in physick and anatomy'. The date 1732 is found on p 11 and 1742 on p 74. An entry on p 3, dated 1771 seems to be by a different hand. Produced in Oxford. Compiler copied from other sources down contemporary events and ideas of note. Author's holograph MSS. On the title of each volume the author describes himself as 'Maître ès Arts et en Chirurgie à Dijon, Chirurgien du Grand Hôpital, Pensionnaire de l'Académie des Sciences et Belles Lettres de la même Ville, et Associé de l'Académie Royale de Chirurgie'. The latest date in the last volume is 1755. Inside the first fly-leaf of each volume: '2 ll. 10s. Pour relieure, papier, etc. pour ce volume'. Produced in Dijon.

Notes and extracts on vegetable materia medica, botany, etc. (with the exception of MS.2882, which deals with British insects, and MS.7961 which consists of general correspondence). The plants discussed include species from Africa, Asia and the Americas. Many of the pieces are drafts of lectures (to bodies such as the Royal Botanic Society) or of papers later published in journals such as the Pharmaceutical Journal, Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association, etc. Some items include inserted correspondence.

Robert Hooper papers, [1820-1825], comprising: inter-leaved copies of his 'Anatomical plates of the bones and muscles diminished from Albinus'. Third edition. London: J. Murray 1807. And 'Anatomical plates of the thoracic and abdominal viscera' ... Third edition, London: J. Murray, 1809. The first with holograph [?] MS. additions and illustrations on the Brain: the second with similar additions on the Organs of Generation. In the first volume there are 12 ll. in MS., and 38 large and small pen-drawn coloured drawings of the brain, etc., and one uncoloured. In the second volume there are 10 ll. in MS., and two roughly drawn anatomical illustrations. The script closely resembles that of Robert Hooper, and it is possible that these two volumes were his own copies with holograph additions, which were later revised and expanded into two works published later. These were: 'The morbid anatomy of the human brain', published in 1826, and 'The morbid anatomy of the human uterus', published in 1832. Produced in London.

Emily Jermyn papers, 1818, comprising: 'Botanic etymology, or an attempt to derive from their original language, and to explain the names and terms, generic and specific, used in the Science of Botany: and to determine from such sources their proper and correct prosody. With short biographical notices of such eminent persons whose names have been honored in their adaption to plants: and many anecdotes ... relating to their cultivations, properties and uses. Author's holograph MSS. An exhaustive work which must have involved enormous labour: it is unpublished.' Produced in Sibton (Suffolk).

Correspondence of the Mayor and Aldermen of Kingston-upon-Hull. 1660-1698. Also their meeting book, 1668-1669, containing entries refering to the Plague and quarantine.

Papers of Dominique Jean Larrey including personal correspondence (1770-1855) and a journal (1813-1814). Correspondence by him to his wife, daughter and son, and letters to him by various correspondents. The papers originate mainly from his journeys and campaigns with the army, including: France, Germany, Italy, Egypt Prussia, Russia, Poland, Austria, Spain and Austria. In addition MS.3173 is a resumé by Larrey's son of his career 1766-1814.

Notes of lectures of Jacques Lazerme, physician, 1729-c 1755.

MSS.3259-3285 comprise chiefly scientific material; they include student notebooks on zoology, botany and geology (MSS.3259-3280); scientific logs from the British Antarctic Expedition (MSS.3281-3283), specifically a biological log (MSS.3281-3282) and a log of whales sighted (MS.3283), both spanning 1910-1913; an address delivered in 1913 to the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association on Mendel's principle of heredity (MS.3284); and some notes on fish and fishing (MS.3285). MSS.5252-5254 comprise more personal and more miscellaneous material. MS.5252 is a scrapbook kept by Lillie, containing news cuttings, photographs and miscellaneous papers, spanning the period c.1845-1910 and including cuttings (with portrait prints) on science and scientists, 1845-1901; caricatures by Lillie of lecturers and staff at Birmingham University, 1904-1905; geological photographs, 1907-1909; family photographs (including a group class portrait at United Services' College, Westward Ho!, c.1892); and ephemera from Cambridge, 1909-1910. MS.5253 comprises cuttings from newspapers and illustrated magazines, spanning 1910-1914 and mainly relating to Robert Falcon Scott's British Antarctic Expedition. Finally MS.5254 comprises correspondence and very miscellaneous papers from the period 1824-1938 (plus some undated material) among them letters to his grandfather John Lillie D.D. (1806-1866), and to his maternal relatives the Macaire family, and letters to Lillie from E.A.N. Arber, Caroline Oates and others.

Notes of Lister's lectures, personal material and juvenilia, 1737-1967. Detail of the types of material found in different areas of the collection can be found in the Arrangement field. MSS.6961-6989 include material relating to other members of the Lister family, including Sir Joseph's father Joseph Jackson Lister.

Daybooks of Friedrich Wilhelm Lorinser containing surgical notes, and a collection of manuscripts, 1852-1893.

'A Manuscript of Medical Reviews in a new concise and exact Collection from the Ancient and Modern Authors; distinguished ... from all former Collections by the addition of referent marginal letters shewing from what Author any sentence of paragraph is taken; and by figures referring to the prior Authors of matters and points commonly found in some modern Accounts'. The second volume has a title-page (p. 938), 'The Art of Physick. The Principles of Physick or the General Institutions and Fundamentals of that Art; delivered in its proper Method and Division. And with the modern corrections and additions'. There are several indexes, and the manuscript exhibits a very wide knowledge of 17th century medical writings. On the verso of the last leaf of Volume II is an inscription 'All my Observations and most extraordinary Medicines are posted to this Book from my Day Book and from the Doctor's Files to this Jan. 5th 1714-15.' 'And to this Aprill the 4th 1716'. 'And to this February the 4th 1717-18'. The latest date found is 31 July 1719 in an added note on p. 764. 'William Chalk, 152 Grosvenor Street Camberwell' is faintly written in pencil inside the upper cover of Volume II. He has also made a calculation of dates, based on the year 1844 beneath the author's dates as given above. Produced in Watford?

Commonplace books of extracts and notes from works published mainly during the last quarter of the 17th century and early 18th century, relating to science, medicine and mathematics. Written mainly in Latin or Italian, but with some entries in French. Author's holograph MSS. Illustrated by numerous folding and other pen-drawn diagrams and figures, and a few wash-drawings. The numeration of the volumes has been added.

Vol. I In universam scientiam mechanicam institutiones (80 ll. 3 folding pen-and-wash drawings). II Optica. Catoptrica. Dioptrica (56 ll. 4 folding pen-drawings). III Extracts and notes mainly in Latin, but a few in French on medical, scientific, mathematical and philosophical works, mostly published between c 1685 and 1700: with notices of others on Church history and doctrine, Jansenists, etc. There is a long entry towards the end of the volume on the 'Medicina mentis' by Ehrenfried Walter von Tschirnhausen [1651-1708], (352 ll. 1 folding wash-drawing, 8 folding pen-drawings, wash-and pen-drawing in the text). IV A similar collection, but with a preponderance of entries in French, included in which is a long article under the title: 'La vie de demoiselle Antoinette Bourignon [1616-1680], écrite par elle-même [etc.]' Amsterdam. 1683. The date 1705 is found on the verso of the last leaf (312 ll., 5 folding pen-drawings, and a few marginal pen-drawn figures, etc.) V Notes and extracts on geometry, mechanics, optics, physics, etc. on Cartesian principles: in Italian and Latin. At the end is a long entry entitled: 'Fisica generale sopra il lume, ed i colori per il P. Mallebranche (i.e. Nicolas de Malebranche [1638-1715]) dall'Istoria dell'Accademia delle Scienze, 1699' (224 ll. 6 folding pen-drawings). VI Netwon (Sir I.). Optica: in Latin (160 ll. 11 folding pen-drawings and marginal pen-drawn figures, etc.). VII Extracts from Newton's works on astronomy: conics, mechanics, physics, etc.: in Latin (246 ll., 10 folding pen-drawn figures, etc.). VIII Extracts on astronomy, geography, geometry, and chronology: in Latin. Written in 1713 'in hoc anno'. An added note on the first page contains the date 1714 (208 ll. 8 folding pen-drawn figures, and marginal figures, 1 folding Table). IX Sanctorius (S.). Ex commentariis in Avicennam et in Aphoirismos Hippocratis (256 ll.). A note on 'Colica' in Aphorism XXV is dated 1716. X Extracts and notes from 17th cent. medical works, notes of cases, medical receipts, etc.: in Latin (196 ll.). Illustrated with a full-page pen-drawing of a male head. Against this Marmi has written: 'Exhibeo schema communicatum mihi ab excellentissimo D[octore] Schustonio [?] Practico Esslingense ... Elegantissime Burrhus eques Mediolani (i.e. Giuseppe Francesco Borri [1627-1695]) apud Tackium (Johann Tackius [1617-1675]) Phasis p. 160 uti Macrocosmi Compendium homo existimatur, ita homo sive humanus mundus in se quoque habet proprium compendium in vultu et imago nostri corporis est facies'. The illustration shows the facial nerves supposed to correspond with those of other parts of the body. XI A similar volume, mainly in Latin, but with some entries in Italian (318 ll.). There are long extracts and notes on the works of Galen and Hippocrates. A marginal note on the 6th leaf is dated Naples 1714: another entry on 'Aqua Tofana' is dated 1715 apparently at Naples.

Pasted down as end-papers at the beginning of Vol. IV is a small folio sheet containing an engraving of 'Triangulus australis' above a decorated wreath, which includes a small meallion-portrait of Werner XVII Comes de Hapsburgo. It is numbered 132, and is apparently extracted from an unidentified volume of engravings. The identification of the author of these MSS. is based on two entries. The first is in Vol. III is a marginal note on the verso of the 12th leaf of the entry of the 'Medicina mentis' of Tschirnhausen noted above. It begins: 'Mihi Jos. Herm. M[armi]. The expansion of 'Herm' into an Italian Christian name seems doubtful, but it could be 'Hermannus' or 'Herminius' or even 'Hermes' or 'Hermete'. The second entry is however decisive. It is found also in a marginal note on the eating of cucumbers in the summer, in connexion with the onset of bile after drinking in hot weather as observed by Galen. This is definitely signed 'I. H. Marmi'. Produced in Naples?

The latest date is 30 August 1731 (Vol. III, p. 271), and this MS. appears to have been written during the life-time of the disreputable Giovanni Gaston I [1671-1737].

Diary of a botanical journey, and notes on the clock at Mantua, 1736-1747.

Notes on astronomy, 1888-1903. The date 1905 occurs on p. 173, and the eclipse of that year is mentioned on p. 1214: on p. 1213 the year 1910 is spoken of in the future tense.

Secreti medicinali. A collection of medical receipts: the first volume mainly in Italian, with a few entries in Latin; the second volume in Italian and Latin, with additions by other hands. Titles within a pen-drawn ornamental border. Vol. I is entitled 'Secreti medicinali'; Vol. II was apparently originally entitled 'Secreti di medicina', but some additions were written in, so that it now reads 'Experimentati/Secreti de Medicina/Raccolti/Per sanare molti mali e/conservare la Sanità'. A considerable part of this volume seems to be by the same hand as the first volume. Volume I is in four Books, and the compiler's initials are given in Receipt No. 77 of the first book: 'provato de me X.P.' and in the next entry: 'che io X.P. ho veduto l'efetti'. The date 1685 occurs on fol. 10 of Book II, and 1699 on fol. 28 of the last Book. Volume II is in two Books. The second has an engraved historiated title-page, with a blank space inscribed: 'Secreti di Medicina Anno' 1699. This book contains 533 numbered receipts. Facing No. 438 is a rough pen-drawing of a distilling apparatus: opposite No. 438 is an inserted printed broadside advertising 'Il vero Balsamo Aureo di Lorenno, chiamato Balsamo Divino' printed at Modena, but undated. This folio sheet has been cut down and folded. This remedy, and an 'Acqua Triacale' by the same Lorenno, are entered as Nos. 438 and 439 of the MS. The latest date in this volume is 1725, in the margin of Receipt No. 530.

Notes of lectures on surgery, [1665], given at the Archispedale di Santo Spirito in Rome. An inscription inside MS.3819 seems to attribute the lectures to Paulus, who is not identified. Produced in Rome.
