The collection includes current and rare editions of Joyce's publications, critical and background literature. Archival material consists of the Lidderdale papers (1915-1983), which includes letters to Jane Lidderdale (god-daughter and joint biographer of Harriet Shaw Weaver, and Lucia Joyce's literary executor); copies of letters to Harriet Shaw Weaver (Joyce's patron and publisher); and papers, letters and photographs of Lucia Joyce (Joyce's daughter). The Weaver papers (1914-1958) include material relating to James and Lucia Joyce, and press cuttings. The Joyce Centenary papers contain various news cuttings etc from 1982. The Lucia Joyce Bequest (1924-1982) includes personal documents, letters, cards and photographs relating to Lucia Joyce.

Original watercolour anatomical drawings, c.300, used for plates published in Bright's Reports on Medical Cases, Selected with a View to Illustrate the Symptoms and Cure of Diseases by Reference to Morbid Anatomy (1827), also includes some unpublished pathological drawings, [1822]-[1839]. Many of the drawings are by Frederick Richard Say and C.L. Canton, those unsigned probably by Bright; Case notes, in Bright's handwriting, 1827-32

Drewitt's pathological drawings, 1876-1881, both water-colour drawings and pencil sketches, of cases admitted to St George's Hospital, 1876-1878 and undated, and of cases of pharyngoeal diphtheria, made at Great Ormond Street Hospital, 1880, and scurvy, rickets and variola, 1881. Many are labelled and annotated.

Papers of Francis Trevelyan Buckland, 1826-1872, comprising 2 commonplace books (1826-1860, 1860-1872) containing newspaper cuttings; letters, including some from Sir Benjamin Brodie, Richard Owen and John Quekett; photographs; and miscellaneous items collected by Buckland. Also including a volume titled Descriptive and Illustrated Catalogue of the Physiological Series of Comparative Anatomy contained in the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons in London: Vol. 1 (1852) presented to Buckland in 1864 by the Council in recognition of his work in identifying the coffin of John Hunter, so that it could be reinterred in Westminster Abbey. Inserted in the volume are letters and other information relating to this event, including rubbings of John Hunter's coffin plate.

Working papers and correspondence of Sir Francis (Franz) Eugene Simon. Scientific notebooks in the collection date from 1919-1934, largely the period of Simon's researches on low temperature physics at the Physikalisch-Chemisches Institut of Berlin University, and subsequently at Breslau. Other notes and manuscripts for lectures and articles are post 1930, while a large group of correspondence files are from the years 1922-1956, providing a full account of Simon's dealings with many fellow scientists and scientific organisations. Individual letter files concern V.M. Goldsmidt, Max Born, Gwyn Owain Jones and Nevill Mott among many other notable figures. Details of Simon's involvement in atomic energy development are to be found in papers on uranium isotope separation (MAUD Committee notes) and UK Atomic Energy Authority correspondence. Simon's professional appointments as head of the Clarendon Laboratory and as science correspondent to the Financial Times are represented by substantial groups of letters. There are twelve notebooks with some associated papers; the series also includes files of lectures, articles, cuttings and souvenirs, including photographs, with files of correspondence. Two later additions to the collection consist of correspondence and files highlighting Simon's contacts with industrial firms, universities and international organisations.

Papers of John Lizars Lizars and Henry Robert Silvester, 1854-1856, comprising a manuscript volume of notes started by Lizars, as a Student in Anatomy, relating to work on preparations and dissections, reading in the Library, and attending hospital days,1853-1854. His work is countersigned by Frederic Carpenter Skey (Professor of Anatomy and Surgery from 1852) and Edward Stanley (Member of Council 1835-1862 and President 1848 and 1857); the notes are then continued by Silvester, as a Student in Human and Comparative Anatomy, relating to daily activites, including drawings and paintings of specimens, dissections, work with preparations, hospital visits and cataloguing, 1855-1856.

48 paintings of Ear, Nose and Throat subjects, 20th century, comprising paintings on board, stamped on the back with 'Kreutle Ferencz...Budapest...'. (Ferencz Kreutle was a Hungarian publisher.) The drawings were located in a package labelled 'For the attention of Professor Michael, Institute of Laryngology.'

(2) Aristotelis Brief Am Kunig Alexander (letter purported to have been written by Aristotle to King Alexander, offering advice on his health, in prose and in verse, in fact part of one of Aristotle's suppositious works, the Secreta Secretorum) (ff 93r-106v);
(3) Calendar for 1439, 1458, 1477 and 1496 (Latin), accompanied by astronomical chapters, with tables and instructions for use (ff 109v-130r);
(4) Elucidarus (a summary of Christian theology by Honorius Augustodunensis, in the form of a dialogue) (ff 131r-159r);
(5) Epistel Des Juden Samuel (epistle of the Jew Samuel) (ff 160r-186v).
The content of the two calendars, (1) and (3), is nearly identical.
Folios 107r-109r, 130v, 159v and 187r-187v are blank.
Signed by the scribe, Nicholas Pfaldorffer (f 106v).The guards in the centre of each quire consist of strips cut from a 13th-century manuscript. Folio 188r has a 16th-century house charm, consisting of words taken from the Antiphon of St Agatha.

Manuscript volume [1620s]: Christoph Kotter's 'Mystisches Manuskript', comprising declarations of mystical experiences made before the civic and ecclesiastical authorities of the town of Sprottau. With 20 pen drawings of visions in the text.

Manuscript volume, probably 15th or 16th century, 'Chyromantia et Natura Planetarum', a treatise on palmistry (chiromancy), including 21 colour diagrams of hands and symbols. Bound with a number of later printed works, including Thomas Hill's The Schoole of Skil (T Iudson for W Iaggard, London, 1599).

Papers, 1788-1949 and undated, of Vendla Thane, comprising personal papers, 1890, 1910-1949 and undated, such as references, 1910-1911, 1933-1934, passport, 1923, curriculum vitae, 1923, degree certificates, 1927, a few miscellaneous items of correspondence, medical material, photographs, 1888, 1910s-1940s and undated, covering the years of her youth with her parents, her school career, and various Thane relatives, and miscellaneous printed material; genealogical notes on the Klingbergs of Stockholm (descended from the Vasas, the old Swedish royal family), 1788-1902 and undated, possibly written by Jenny, Lady Thane, and including documents about C G Thrström, 1788-1809, papers relating to the engagement and marriage of George Thane and Jenny Klingberg, 1883-1884, and memorabilia relating to Jenny Lind and her family, possibly collected by Lady Thane, and including a manuscript of 'Jenny Lind' by Lady Thane.
