Notes of Charles Barbeyrac's practice taken chiefly by his students. Some case histories are included in MS.7126.

The collection comprises correspondence, writings and administrative material relating to the Jenner family, particularly Dr. Edward Jenner (pioneer of smallpox vaccination) and the associated Black and Davies families, 1680-1877.

The material on Edward Jenner includes papers relating to organisations set up in the aftermath of his vaccination discoveries: the National Vaccine Establishment, the Royal Jennerian Society and the London Vaccine Institution.

The majority of the collection is made up of journals kept by Buckle during the years 1866-1870, during which he travelled to South America, South Africa and Australia (there are also periods during which he was stationed at Portsmouth). There are some lacunae in the sequence of diaries. There is also one autograph album kept by Buckle relating partly to his own affairs (his application to become House Surgeon at the West Norfolk and Lynn Hospital, 1863-1864) but also including older material predating his birth.

Collection of note-books containing six volumes on Botany and Comparative Ostology, a Register of Photographs, and a Bicycling Diary. The 5 Botanical notebooks and the single volume on Comparative Ostology are illustrated with mounted and other drawings, some in pencil.

Two commonplace books, 1730, 1732-1742.

Volume 1: with extracts from Sir William Temple and George Cheyne on health, 'The British Heroes, or, a new Poem in honour of St. George' by Mr John Grub, Schoolmaster of Christ Church, Oxon, etc.

Volume 2: Strange events, accidents and phenomena: with other historical occurrences worth observation, pp 63-72 'Paradoxes in physick and anatomy'. The date 1732 is found on p 11 and 1742 on p 74. An entry on p 3, dated 1771 seems to be by a different hand. Produced in Oxford. Compiler copied from other sources down contemporary events and ideas of note. Alchemical writings by Hollandus and others, early-mid 18th century; item 1: Traité d'ouvrages minéraux, ou de la Pierre des Philosophes. There are some small pen-drawings of alchemical apparatus in some inner margins. Inserted as a frontispiece, is a symbolic [?] sepia drawing of a man rescuing a child from drowning in a lake. This work was first published-in German-in 1600 at Middelburg: no record of a French translation has been traced.

On the first fly-leaf 'Anne Cath. Phelps' [c. 1820?], and on the first leaf 'F. Hearne. The vast majority of the material relates to Dent's research and clinical interests and falls into four main categories: correspondence files; files created around the publication of papers; lecture notes and symposium papers; and case/research notes. There are also smaller quantities dealing with other aspects of his career, such as the administration of UCH Metabolic Ward. The papers thus reflect most of Dent's scientific and clinical interests. This research is mainly represented by the abstracted documentation which he kept with drafts of his published papers (see section E.1) and also by correspondence about cases and clinical case notes (see section C.5). To a lesser degree they also illustrate the work at the laboratory bench which underpinned much of this research. For example, a file of unidentified paper chromatograms has been preserved (C.2/10) to illustrate one of Dent's methods of working, as described by his colleague, Heathcote, and quoted in the Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society, 1978: 'Paper chromatograms were not to be thrown away. They were filed and, since the colours faded, the outline of each spot was drawn in and the intensity of the colour was indicated by a number.' The way in which Dent compiled a large series of files around drafts of scientific papers also illustrates the importance of the published paper to him as a stage in the research process. An incomplete collection of reprints of Dent's published papers may be found in section E.2 of the collection.

Notebooks of Walter Pickett Turner, 1887-c 1910, containing lectures and observations on tuberculosis: with other notes on medical and scientific subjects, drafts of letters, etc. Author's holograph MSS.

Two volumes of notes, in Latin comprising 'Collegium formulare habitum ab illustri Domino Georgio Wolfgangio Wedelio. A.O.R. MDCXCIV coeptum Die 19 Novembris'. The last four leaves contain an account of a 'Zermabschwechtende hitzigen Fieber', which broke out in 1696. At the end of the main text 'Finit die 27 April 1695'. On the t.p. is an inscription 'Sorte obtinuit Johannes Philippus Huth, Doctor Fridburgensis in Wetterau. 1712. 14 Novembris'. MS. No. 4984, a copy of Wedel's 'Collegium casuale', 1695-98, has a similar inscription on the t.p. in which it is stated that the MS. was inherited by J. P. Huth from his uncle Philippus Huth, Doctor at Gemersheim 1712, who was probably the compiler of both these MSS. At the end of this MS. is inserted a printed leaflet containing an account of a disturbance in the city of Thorn between Polish and German students on 16 July 1724. (This leaflet is entered in the Catalogue of Printed Books, s.v. 'THORN'.) and 'Collegium casuale' (in two books). 'Collegium therapeuticum'. The two folding leaves have been inserted, and contain a 'Tabula de methodo consultandi epistolari et renunciatoria'. On the recto of the first of these is written 'Collegium casuale a chymista Wedelio habita' and below this 'Sorte obtinuit hoc manuscriptum ex hereditate beati Domini Patruelis Philippi Huth, Medicinae Doctoris et Physici Germersheimensis 1712. 14 Septembris. Johannes Philippus Huth'. The second inscription is by a different hand from that of the text. A similar inscription is found in MS. No. 4983, Wedel's 'Collegium formulare', 1695-96. At the end of the second book of the 'Collegium casuale' is written 'Finit. Anno [16]98 die 23 Januarii', and at the beginning of the 'Collegium therapeuticum' 'Mense Maii 1695 inceptum'.

Cookery book. Procuring diseases. The first volume is lettered as above, on the upper cover, below this is 'Receipt Book. 1789. Vol. I.' The second volume is similarly lettered 'Cookery Book curing and Procuring Diseases. Vol. 2.' Inscribed on the first leaf of the first volume 'Anne White. 1789.' The medical and household receipts begin from the other end of the volume: the first part to p. 122 is mainly cookery: there are entries by several other hands, the latest on p. 72 dated 1809. The same arrangement is found in Vol. II, and the date 1845 is found on p. 96 of the cookery section. Here again in this volume the entries are by several other hands.

Papers of Norah Woodman, 1906-1938, comprising an account of her training as a nurse in 1906; miscellaneous material on the Lambeth Infirmary/Hospital, including annual reports, 1921-1938; financial statements of the Parish of St Mary, Lambeth Board of Guardians, 1910-1929.

Lecture notes, miscellaneous correspondence and "memoirs" (short stories, often with an autobiographical element) covering his career, 1909-1976. The collection comprises 7 series: 1: file on career, 1920s-1976; 2: 'memoirs' - short stories, composed at various times during Hartridge's life which he intended to publish on his retirement, 1909-1976. His daughter selected those stories which had an autobiographical element in them; 3: Notes, 1947-1953; 4: Corrrespondence, 1928-1951; 5: Lectures, 1920s-1950s; 6: Publications, 1949-1950; 7: Photograph and painting, 1920s-1970s.

Papers of Keith Hodgkin, 1939-1994, including index cards of lecture, ward round and case notes made while a student at the Radcliffe Infirmary and the Hammersmith Hospital 1939-1943, and patient records from his practice 1954-1979. There are also reports and surveys illustrating the use of practice records in research. His Family Record contains reminiscences and evaluation of his professional, as well as family life, and material relating to his grandfather's uncle, Thomas Hodgkin (1798-1866).

Papers of David Hutchison, 1942-1980, including copies of partnership accounts, 1951; plans and photographs of 1960s alterations to practice premises; audio tapes of reminiscences: description of general practice pre- and post-war, mainly relating to record keeping and surgery, description of alterations to premises (with transcripts), school and student days, service in the RAF medical service in South East Asia during the Second World War and gypsum 'wart stones' .

Medical, cookery, and household receipts and prescriptions. There are many blank leaves, and a large number of the receipts are inserted loose. Among the latter are 17 holograph receipts, dated between 1830 and 1832 by Jules Sichel [1802-1868], the ophthalmologist. These were all prescribed for Lady Julia.

The papers cover some aspects of Head's life in detail, but there are few records of his major achievements in medicine. The records of his work (Section B) are mainly the texts of lectures and papers, but there are some case notes: B2/1 is a volume of reports on the examination of pilgrims to Lourdes which Head undertook in 1895 with the help of George Bull, an English Roman Catholic doctor from Paris; and B3 is a volume of post mortem reports on cases of shingles, which affects the same areas as visceral disease, representing, as Head discovered, the distribution of either a single nerve root or of a single segment of the spinal cord, now known as 'Head's areas'.

The photographs of Head's arm (B9) probably date from his 1905 work on the effects of severing the nerves in his own arm, and several of the papers and cuttings in Sections A4 and B18 comment upon the experiment.

In Section A is the text of an autobiography which Head dictated at some time during his last years, but apparently never completed. It covers only his childhood, schooldays at Charterhouse, his residence in Halle in 1880, his undergraduate days at Trinity College, Cambridge, and his work on the physiology of respiration with Ewald Hering at the German University in Prague from 1884 to 1886. Head's letters to his mother [Hester] (D2) give many more details of the same period, the letters from Halle including diary entries.

Head's and his wife's shared interest in art, architecture, music, literature and drama is recorded in their diaries and scrap books (Section E), and much of their correspondence (D4). Lady Head wrote novels and it is probable that the prose works in Section F are hers.

The restricted life which he and Lady Head lived after his retirement is vividly illustrated in the correspondence between Lady Head and Hester Marsden-Smedley (D6).

A small collection of English medical and cookery receipt books, assembled from several sources, 18th-19th century.

Letters to and from various members of the Herschel family. MS.7867 contains material relating to Sir William Herschel (1738-1822), Caroline Lucretia Herschel (1750-1848) and Alexander Stewart Herschel (1836-1907); MS.7868 centres on Sir John Frederick William Herschel (1792-1871).

A collection of material relating to Harry Cusden Ltd. The collection includes business diaries kept by Harry Cusden, 1919-1943, papers relating to the running of the business including numerous documents relating to war damage repairs, the purchase of the properties, leases, etc. The series also contains personal papers, share certificates and customer correspondence. There is a large collection of photographs including photographs of the exterior of the shops, window displays, staff and staff outings, as well as a large collection of miscellaneous photographs showing family, friends, holidays, events etc. Many of these photographs are unidentified and undated. There is also a series of various price lists and advertisements for the business, trade cards, ephemera relating to Harry Cusden's role as Councillor, newspaper cuttings and other pieces of ephemera.

Anonymous typescript biography of Edvard Benes, President of Czechoslovakia entitled Ein Mann für Europa [A Man for Europe]. The text is accompanied by 2 sheets inscribed 'Fahrten und Abenteuer in Zwei Jahrzehnten meines Lebens. Selbstbekenntnisse von Richard Turba' [Journeys and Adventures in Two Decades of my Life. Self-confession of Richard Turba]. It is not clear whether Turba is the author of the biography.

This collection contains the papers of Constance Maynard from 1866-1935. It comprises diaries of a varying nature relating to all aspects of the life of Constance Maynard including her Greenbook diaries 1866-1935 - of her emotions, thoughts, extracts from letters, sermons and texts; her Diaries 1871-1913 - detailing weekly activities and events of both a personal and work nature; her Sundial Diaries 1911-1935 - recording the search for both cottages, the Sundial, Little Bookham and the Sundial, Gerrard's Cross, and subsequently details of life in retirement such as accounts of her visitors, visits made, community work and works read and written; her Travel Diaries, 1868-1926 - of her college vacations, holidays, tours and visits, detailing companions and places visited with some photographs, maps and drawings; Diaries regarding Effie [Stephanë Anthon] 1887-1915 - detailing the life, character and relationship with Effie [Stephanë Anthon] from the arrangement of her adoption until her death; the Autobiography written 1915-1933 - covering 1849-1927, divided into seven parts and further into chapters by Constance Maynard, covering all aspects of her life, and including her edited version of a history of the Henry Maynard family, c.1920s, originally written by her Cousin Mary [HM King] 1910, covering 1839-1910; Writings by Constance Maynard 1870-1931 - including indexed anthologies of her own poems, and of poems by other authors, anecdotes told to her, notes on subjects such as Euminides and the Parables, Extracts from Texts, and a Bible with extensive notes added by Constance Maynard; Writings by Family and Friends 1871-1905 - including diaries and notebooks of Catherine Firth, Dora Maynard and Mabel Prideaux; and Personal Memorabilia, 1868-1913 - including her Girton College Degree Certificate, a life painting of Limpsfield, a book presented to her by Westfield College on her retirement and a life painting of The Sundial, Little Bookham.

Papers, published and unpublished, by Tina Keller, 1938-1982, relating to her training and work as an analytical psychologist. They include both an unpublished autobiography, and her recollections of her encounter with Jung and other members of his circle.

Translations, by Joseph Christopher William Horne into English of Hungarian poetry. These were intended for an anthology which never reached the stage of publication, although some poems may be included which have already been published. The archive consists of a typescript autobiography, covering the years 1886-1975. The typescript is a transcript of a tape recording dictated by Dorothy Foster Place to her four children. The autobiography includes accounts of her early life and education in New Brighton; her studies in Chemistry at the University of Liverpool and King's College, London; her studies in Agriculture at Studley Agricultural College, Warwickshire; her agricultural work during the First World War and eventually work on her own farm in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. It covers her interest and activities in the suffrage movement; her marriage; the birth of her children and her extensive holiday travels in Europe and North Africa.

The archive consists of birth and marriage certificates (1876-1880); film, theatre and publishers' contracts for EM Hull's works (1919-1956); one photograph thought to be EM Hull in her wedding dress (one of the only known photographs of the author) (c.1900); one copy of Sir Walter Scott's Poetical Works (1865) that belonged to EM Hull's father James Henderson; an article by Cecil Hull 'Six Weeks in Southern Algeria' (1930); Edith Maud Hull's suitcase; the following eight books by Edith Maud Hull inscribed to her daughter Cecil Winstanley Hull:

Transcriptions of three scribbling diaries kept by footman Arthur Newbury with biographical essay of Newbury, modern photographs of addresses mentioned in the diaries, maps, index and note on sources, all compiled by David Jackson, who may have obtained the diary at a car boot sale in Cheshire (115pp), February 1997.

The archive consists of manuscript diaries (1912-1914, 1950-1956), manuscript notebooks which include some of her own poetry (1900-1922), publications by Adams and photographs of visits to Paris (1906, 1915).

Letters written by James Smetham, 1853-1877, mainly to William Davies, concerning his work, schemes to raise money and his religious beliefs. Smetham called his letters "ventilators" and they often took the form of handmade notebooks with their contents resembling diaries or commonplace books. Other correspondents include Rev Thomas Akroyd, Quintin Hogg (1845-1903), Charles Mansford, Charles Gabriel Dante Rossetti (1828-1882), John Ruskin (1819-1900) and Frederic James Shields (1833-1911). Also letters to Sarah Smetham, his widow, from William Davies, 1889-1895.

Leaflets advertising demonstrations and meetings in protest against antisemitic measures in Germany and exhorting readers to boycott German products, by a number of British Jewish interest groups and political groups, 1933-1935, and series of prayers and intercessions on behalf of German Jewry produced in London by the office of the Chief Rabbi, 1933-1945.

Theresienstadt poems collection, 1938, comprise typescript poems written by inmates of Theresienstadt, including Leo Strauss, Myra Strauss Gruhenberg, Mara, Otto Pam, Koppel and Fritz Pollak.

Records created or held by Dennis Berry while he was the Head of the Architecture department at Kingston School of Art/ Kingston College of Art/ Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University). Includes photographs, scrap books, notes on town plan exhibitions and projects, notes on curriculum and examinations, meeting minutes, diaries, leaflets and publications from the Architecture department, and posters for an Architecture talk 1959.

Papers notably include correspondence to Conradi notably from Michael [Bayley] (believed to be John Bayley's brother), [2003-2005]; Dr Marjorie Boulton concerning matters including Conradi's biography, c 2001-2006 and from Harper Collins Publishers discussing the sales of Iris Murdoch: Saint and Artist, 2003-2004. Papers also contain research notes including a draft forward to Conradi's Iris Murdoch: Saint and Artist with notations, c 1985; notebooks used by Conradi to record information about Murdoch for his biography and newspaper cuttings regarding Murdoch, including obituaries, 1995-2004.
