Decorated copy of a deed (13 January 1677) amalgamating two church societies of shoemakers and giving revised and clarified rules for the new Fraternities. Another deed (11 September 1731) gives further modifications and clarifications. The scribe gives the date of the folio as 1732.

Extract from records of proceedings before the Commissioners 'for hearing and determining appeals against the duties on male servants' at the Golden Lion Inn at Cheriton Bishop, Devon, on 3 Feb 1807, giving reasons for allowing an appeal against a surcharge on a domestic servant made by the Rev. Bryan Roberts, Rector of Drewsteignton. The appeal had been challenged by James Searle, surveyor, and the commissioners were Richard Holland, John Cann and Baldwin Huldford. The return made by Roberts in 1806 had included 1 four wheel carriage, 2 riding horses, 2 labour horses, 4 sporting dogs, 1 male servant, and 'one other occasionally employed in his garden'.

Letter from Thomas Robert Malthus of London to Rev George Turner, Kettleburgh, Wickham Market, [Suffolk], 28 Nov 1800. Referring to Malthus's tract An Investigation of the Causes of the present High Price of Provisions(1800). 'I sat up till two o'clock the evening before I went to Bath to finish it that it might come out before the meeting of Parliament.' Referring to the the famous Essay on the Principle of Population: 'The prevailing conversation about the pop[ulation] of the country has caused enquiries to be made about the Essay, which is now nowhere to be bought. This I hope will animate me to proceed in another edition, though to say the truth I feel at present very idle about it'.

Asking whether Tyrell sees any difficulty in it being managed by the Lord Mayor of London and whether the Corporation interferes with any market in the City. The building in Mark Lane is open to all on market days, but the Coal Exchange is open to subscribers only; the first buyers do not exceed about one hundred.

(2) Letter from William Manning of Totteridge, Hertfordshire to Thomas Tyrell, Esq, 4 Apr 1801. Discussing the fees to be incurred in passing the Coal Bill through the two Houses of Parliament [ordered Mar 1801; order for second reading discharged 12 May 1801], and the means of paying them. Asks Tyrell to show the letter to Mr Stracey, 19 Fludyer Street, and to confer with him about it.

Papers and correspondence relating to the banking house of Marsh, Stracey, Fauntleroy and Graham, 1811-1825, comprising five letters, 1811-1817, from J.H. Stracey, with one of Henry Fauntleroy, to Sir James Sibbald, concerning the latter's business affairs; copies of the papers of Henry Fauntleroy and his confessions, 1824, including a list of Fauntleroy's forgeries and 'non-investment of stock', as well as Fauntleroy's property and its value; letters and papers, 1824-1825, relating chiefly to the efforts of Messrs Marsh, Stracey, Fauntleroy and Graham to satisfy the creditors involved in the collapse of the bank following the trial and execution of Fauntleroy for forgery in 1824, including some to Robert Scott, one of the assignees; drafts of letters to newspapers from members of the partnership protesting their ignorance of the forgeries, and some sheets of rough notes, apparently relating to the losses of certain creditors of the bank.

British and French patents, 1861-1862, for John Marshall's invention for 'the collection, concentration and transmission of sound, so as to facilitate the hearing.' Also includes a Belgian 'brevet d'importation.'

Letter from Mordaunt Martin of 'Burnham' to Dr [John Coakley] Lettsom, Sambrook House, London, 8 Mar 1801. Stating that he has despatched to Lettsom a parcel of mangelwurzel seeds. Explaining that he was prevented from answering Lettsom's letter of 3 Jan by an attack of gallstones, since relieved by pills of soap and rhubarb. Discussing the 'Brown Bread Act' [probably 41 Geo.3.c.16] to which, he says, Lettsom was in some degree accessory; quoting Lettsom and Horne Tooke on the Act; Martin prefers brown bread for his breakfast, using his own wheat 'sifted in the coarsest hair sieve', but deprecates the 'indiscriminate use of it'. Attacking at length the Potato Premium Bill, which had just been rejected, according to 'the paper of this night'; claiming that such a bill would force by premiums an unnatural produce on land which the occupiers could use for more profitable crops. Adding that his and Lettsom's 'hearts will beat in unison' on reading pages 109-110 of the 2nd edition of [Robert] Fellowes's Christian Philosophy [1799].

Letter from Karl Heinrich Marx of 7 Modena Villas, Maitland Park, Haverstock Hill, London to J M Ludlow, Esq, 10 Apr 1869. Controverting Ludlow's article in the Fortnightly Review: 'You say first that Lassalle propogated my principles in Germany and say then that I am propagating "Lassallian principles" in England. ... Lassalle has taken from my writings almost literally all his general theoretical developments ... I have nothing whatever to do with his practical applications.'

Approving of the 'idée de publier la traduction de das Kapital en livraisons périodiques', but thinks that 'le public français, toujours impatient de conclure' will not continue to buy the parts because of the difficulties encountered in the introductory chapters. The letter ends: 'Il n'y a pas de route royale pour la science et ceux là seuls ont chance d'arriver à ses sommets lumineux qui ne craignent pas de se fatiguer à gravir ses sentiers escarpés.'
