Manuscript Articles of Agreement, 1 Feb 1793, between a company of gentlemen for raising a fund of fifty thousand pounds, for the purpose of establishing a general insurance office, 'to ensure persons from loss of property by burglaries, highway and footpad robberies, public and private thefts, together with the expense of prosecution'. Includes the signatures of the 84 original shareholders against the number of shares held by each.

Manuscript notebook compiled by Andrew Henry Lynch, [1812-1819], giving statistics of the population of counties, parishes, baronies and boroughs of Ireland, chiefly drawn from the census returns. Includes notes on the population of Ireland in previous centuries. A label on the back of the volume reads 'Lynch. Irish Statistics'.

Manuscript volumes containing copies of the minutes of the 'Committee of Council appointed for the consideration of all matters relating to Trade and Foreign Plantations', 3 Mar 1823-6 Feb 1827. Each volume contains an index of contents. It appears from the watermarks that the volumes were written later than 1826, possibly under the direction of William Huskisson, President of the Board of Trade.

Manuscript volume containing a 'Declaration of the landholders of the parish of Clogherny', 1 Oct 1829, being a Protestant declaration in favour of law and order, religious toleration and loyalty to the constitution, acknowledged and reciprocated by the Catholic population of the area.

Dating from 1830, volumes one and two concern the mining laws in Mexico. Volume three is a translation of Francisco Xavier de Gamboa's Comentarios a las ordenanzas de Minas.

Manuscript volume containing a draft by Gavin Young, 1832, of his pamphlet Observations on the law of population: being an attempt to trace its effects from the conflicting theories of Malthus and Sadler (London, 1832). It contains cancelled material which does not appear in the printed edition, and on the front cover is attributed to a 'Colonel Twenny'. The British Library catalogue gives the author as Young.

A petition, 1601, written by Keymer intended for Queen Elizabeth concerning the advancement of the fishing business. The second manuscript is concerned with international sea trade, 1620, principally between England and Holland and Denmark.

Manuscript volume containing transcripts of documents relating to the Court of Wards, [1620], namely a selection of decrees from 1553 made by John Hare, headed 'Le Court des Gards', dated [12 Jul] 1581; reports of cases of the Court of Wards, dated 1605-1610; 'Instructions for the Master of our Wards and Liveryes', [by James Ley, 1st Earl of Marlborough, dated [Dec, 1618]; an account [by William Rastell] of procedure in the Court of Wards, with a table of fees and a table of contents, dated [1622].

Manuscript volume containing a [contemporary copy of an] account of the proceedings of the conference between the House of Commons and the House of Lords concerning the liberty of the subject, undertaken before drawing up the Petition of Right. Includes the arguments of Sir Dudley Digges, Sir Edward Littleton, John Selden, Sir Edward Coke, [Richard] Cresheld and [Robert] Mason, and extracts from the Parliament, Pipe and Close Rolls from 1272.

Manuscript volume containing an Order in Council, 10 Feb 1656, signed by William Jessop, Clerk of the Council, concerning the appointment of a British consul at Tetuán, now in Morocco. The Order agrees to the recommendation made in a report by the Commissioners of the Admiralty and Navy that there should not be an official Consul at Tetuán, but that Nathaniel Luke should reside there in the nature of a Providore, and that General Blake should be empowered to commission captains of the Fleet sent there to treat with the Governor or magistrates upon such articles as shall be thought necessary to maintain free commerce with England.

Manuscript volume containing an 'Account of the gross produce of the several duties under the management of Excise, with their respective appropriations and rates, and the times of their commencement', written in [1763], and covering the period 1662 to 1763. There is a possibility that this manuscript was created by James Bindley, Commissioner of Stamp Duties, 1765-1818.

Manuscript volume containing a memorandum proposing the re-establishment of the Composition Trade, c1675, by which foreign merchants were allowed to import goods for re-shipment to foreign parts on payment of a customs duty, and beginning 'The inhabitants of France, Spain, Flanders and other parts, finding that their merchant ships did not pass the seas with that security as those of England...'.

A deed of assignment, 1719, whereby 'William Mourthatt, of Saint Martin Le Grand, London, Silkman' assigns an annuity payable by the Exchequer to 'William Hayton, of London, Merchant.' The annuity (item) originally belonged to Joseph Cooper who purchased it in 1708. It then passed into the hands of William Mourthatt.

Manuscript volume containing a copy of a letter dated 9 Jun 1744 from Elizabeth Forbes of the School of Sprinning, Jedburgh, [Roxburgh], to David Flint, Trustees Office, Parliament Close, Edinburgh, complaining of her summons by the baillies of Jedburgh for contravening the 'Acts in the Trades Seal of Cause' by ordering equipment from Kelso.

Manuscript volume, 1606, containing a list of all the Offices of England, with the fees belonging to them in the gift of King James I. It contains particulars of the offices connected with the Law Courts, the Court, the Royal Household, garrisons, towns, fortresses, castles, parks, forests, and bishoprics. Of the King's artificers, the Sergeant Paynter was at the head with £100, while the Keeper of the Libraries was at the bottom with £3 6s. 8d.

Manuscript transcript by Richard Bateman, 1612, of a work by Benedictus Victorius Faventius containing a calculator or computer for increasing or diminishing figures, which was printed by Benedict Hector, bookseller of Bologna, in 1512. The text was copied by Bateman from a treatise of a revised edition by Dom. Gaetanus, Doctor of Medicine.

Transcript of a work entitled 'Traitté ou sont enseignées toutes les manières de piendre en mignature, avec plusiers exemples des plus excellens peintres de ce siècle', 1746, comprising an account of the different styles of various miniature painters of that era, notably Louis du Guernier, Jean Eckman, Louis van de Bruggen, Jean Petitot, as well as paintings by Sir Anthony Van Dyck, Claude Vignon and Charles Lebrun.

Humbly offered to the consideration of the Right Honourable Henry Pelham', and suggesting the substitution of a capitation tax on sugar and salt for duties on the products of West Indian plantations as a means of undermining French commercial competitiveness.

Two documents from 1792 containing biographical and critical notes on the poet William Drummond. The first document is the work of Thomas Park, while the second is in a different hand with Park's notes in the margin.

'The Office of a Constable' written by Sir Francis Bacon, contains a speech by Bacon and four other items: ff 14: 'A letter of Advice written to the lower house of Parliament by Sir E.C'; ff 33: 'Spoken to both the houses of Parliament assembled at Dublin by the Lord Deputie of Ireland [Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford] 15 July 1634'; ff 46: 'A Speech delivered in the Starre Chamber by Sir Francis Bacon to the Judges in the last daye of Trinity terme 1617 [8 July]'; ff 53: 'The Commons declarations and impeachments against the Duke of Buckingham'; ff 73: 'The Humble Answere and Plea of George Duke of Buckingham to the declaration ... made against him ... by the Commons house of Parliament'.

Manuscript Commonplace Book of English poetry and prose, dating from the 19th century, containing the second half of a long poem on early biblical history 'continued from the book in white forrel', and other items. Inserted is a folded leaf containing two poems, one dated 1834, by W. C. Yonge, who may have been the compiler of the volume.

Manuscript relating to customs duties on alcoholic spirits imported to Quebec, Canada, 1762, entitled 'Account of all Spirituous Liquors paying Duty to His Majesty Entered inwards in the Port of Quebec in Canada between the 26th May & 31st August 1762, with the particular Quantity & Quality of Spirits & the Duties Levied thereon'. Signed by John Gray, Collector of Customs, and dated 31st Aug 1762. The manuscript is endorsed 'Amount of Duties on Spirituous Liquors. Quebec 31st Aug 1762.' The following ships are mentioned, together with their masters' names and the ports whence they had come: William and Sarah, Union, Sally and Lucy, William and Elizabeth, Juno, Hope, American, Success and La Rette.

Royal warrant granting a pension of £200 a year to John Ramsay McCulloch "in consideration of his services as the author of many useful publications connected with the finance and commerce of the country", issued in June 1886.
The warrant is issued under the signature of Queen Victoria and with the subscriptions of Sir Robert Peel, Ralph Neville and William Cripps. The document also includes a leaf of description and comments by Professor Herbert Somerton Foxwell.

Manuscript arithmetic note-book, 1749, signed at the end 'E.Knight, August 1, 1749'. In a copper-plate hand, with many flourished initials and headings.

Manuscript relating to the Union of England and Scotland, entitled 'Answers to ye 14 Queries', being a reply to [J Ballantyne's] 'Some queries proposed to consideration relative to the Union now intended'. The 'Queries...relative to the Union..." are in fact arguments against it; the writer of the "Answers" (apparently a Scot) points out the fallacies in these arguments and supports the proposed Union.

Contemporary manuscript copy of a proclamation 'concernynge paymente of tythes and oblations as well wythin the Citie of london as ellys wher' wythin the realme', which was made in February 1535. The proclamation contains no date, but an endorsement assigns it, incorrectly, to 36 Henry VIII.

Bound volume containing file copies of decrees relating to commerce collected between 1717 and 1725 by a Paris office of the Compagnie des Fermiers-Généraux, which was a company trading with the Levant. All are printed excepting the following manuscript transcripts concerning the regulation of trade: 1)An extract of the declaration given to the Ministers of Holland and England by the Plenipotentaries of the King, 4 January 1717, including a note that 'this copy was given to the Company on 11 March 1718, in consequence of a letter written by M. Piquet, Keeper of the Seal at the Council of Foreign Affairs'. 2) A decree, dated 7 October 1717, on the laws governing duties on butter and cheeses. 3) Decree headed 'Cires', 1719, beginning 'The King wishes to treat favourably the manufacture established at Limoges...', and transcribed on the last page of a printed decree of 30 March 1719. 4) Decree, dated 1 August 1720, relating to the sawing and merchandising of merain wood, transcribed on the last page of a printed decree of 9 July 1720. 5) Copy of a letter written by the Companie des Fermiers-Généraux to Sr. Savalette, Receiver at St Valery concerning the liability of duty to goods imported from the Levant.

Four notebooks. The first notebook contains manuscript exercises written while George Grote, aged 11 (1805-1806), was a pupil at Charterhouse. The other three notebooks dated 1816, 1817 and 1820 contain notes and essays on various subjects.

A volume, 1955, containing extracts taken mostly from the business papers of Garteret Priaulx & Co. to illustrate the history of Guernsey from 1790 to 1815.

The documents are signed by statesmen including Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury; Thomas Clifford, 1st Baron Clifford of Chudleigh; Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds; Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington; Sir John Coventry; and Charles Bertie.

Copy of a Court Roll containing a grant to John Emyford, clerk, of 5 pieces of arable land of the lord's demesne, formerly in the farm of Thomas Dowe and recently in the farm of Gregory Brandon, by the annual farm of 10d. for each acre annually. The roll also includes livery of seisin to John Emyford, clerk, at the same court. The annual rent is 4s.9d. The document is dated 'Thursday after 6 October, temp. Henry [IV?]', probably [1400-1425].

Manuscript list of 38 names (including 3 on the dorse), with sums of money opposite each, dating from [1700-1750]. The document is headed by four other names, probably those of the 'preasers' or appraisers mentioned at the top of the page. On the dorse is written 'Messe bookes'.

Copy of Court Roll made at the Court Baron of Sir John Brokett (Brockett), Lord of the Manor of Westington, containing a surrender by John Clerke (by the hands of John Cony and William Clerke, customary tenants) of a copyhold property and the admission of John Adams, his heir, for a fine of 16s. The property consists of 3 acres known as Grene Croft. Signed by Thomas Walkenden, steward.
