Manuscript 283 is a holograph manuscript of the short story, The Risks of Life, written by Enoch Arnold Bennett in 1913. SL V 45 is a holograph manuscript of The Lions Share 1916 and SL V 46 is a limited edition of The Old Wives' Tale 1908 by Arnold Bennett.

'Fragmenta regalia, or, Observations on Queene Elizabeth her tymes and favorites' by Sir Robert Naunton. An autograph letter accompanying it, from T.R. Maynard, 1845, suggests that this is the original MS. It was first published, posthumously, in 1641. Internal evidence points to c. 1630 as the date of composition.

'To Maister Anthonie Bacon. An Apologie of the Earle of Essex, against those which falsely and maliciously taxe him to be the onely hinderer of the Peace, and quiet of his Countrey'. The text differs slightly from that of the first printed edition of 1603.

Three treatises bound in one volume; the title pages, colophons and a few initials are illuminated. The verso of the penultimate leaf has been used for a notarial instrument dated 28 August 1571. Usually known as "De liberalibus studiis et ingenuis moribus".

Copied from a note by Gabriel Harvey, in a miscellaneous volume containing the 'Medea & Thyeste of Lod.Dolce.-The Hecuba and Iphigenia of Euripedes in Latin by Erasmus.-and the first Italian and English Grammar' by Henry Grantham 1575 A copy made by S.W. Singer (ob. 1859) of some annotations by Harvey. The volume also contains a copy of a cypher used for a letter by Queen Elizabeth to Nicholas Throckmorton, diplomat, 1 July 1559; with autograph letters from T.W. Jones (1854) and J. Thompson (1818) to S.W. Singer.

Manuscript volume containing Letters Patent of King James I, 1622, addressed to Henry Montague, Viscount Mandeville and several other Lords, Knights and Esquires, appointing them Commissioners on a Standing Committee on Trade. This manuscript would seem to be a contemporary copy of the original document, containing the composition of and the instructions issued to what was practically the first English Board of Trade.

'The Office of a Constable' written by Sir Francis Bacon, contains a speech by Bacon and four other items: ff 14: 'A letter of Advice written to the lower house of Parliament by Sir E.C'; ff 33: 'Spoken to both the houses of Parliament assembled at Dublin by the Lord Deputie of Ireland [Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford] 15 July 1634'; ff 46: 'A Speech delivered in the Starre Chamber by Sir Francis Bacon to the Judges in the last daye of Trinity terme 1617 [8 July]'; ff 53: 'The Commons declarations and impeachments against the Duke of Buckingham'; ff 73: 'The Humble Answere and Plea of George Duke of Buckingham to the declaration ... made against him ... by the Commons house of Parliament'.

Copies of Francis Bacon's Essays taken by John Payne Collier, literary scholar and forger, 1867-1883. Collier notes that the MS. in question was "apparently made before any of them [the Essays] were printed. they appear to vary very materially from any of the printed copies I have met with, but I never saw the first edit." The essays copied are as follows:- Of Studies; Of Discourses; Of Ceremonies and Respectes; Of Followers and Friends; Of Sutors; Of Expences; Of Regiment of Health; Of Honour and Reputation; Of Faction; Of Negotiating; Digested notes of Civill Conversation; Of hope, Envie, hatred, feare and contempt; Not to acquaint everie one with secrettes; Of Frendes; Not to be over busie or idle; How worldlie thinges are to be accounted of; Of Time; Of Povertie and Riches; Of Solitarines; Of Life; How our outward behaviour should agree with other mens; Of Affections. An authograph letter to Bligh Peacock has been inserted at the end of the volume.

Vulgate Bible, c1475-1500: The Psalms are omitted; and "Interpretationes nominum hebraicorum" is added at the end of the N.T.; the prologues and prefaces of St. Jerome are given. There are occasional marginal notes, partially or wholly erased.

A collection of fifty testimonials collected by James Hudson, 1837, to support his application to be Clerk of the University of London.

Volume mainly containing treatises on French financial administration, [1581-1610], namely a report by Maximilien de Béthune, Duc de Sully, Director of the Council of Finance, on the finances of France, [1607]; a paper on the Estates General of France, [1583]; a history of royal taxation in France up to the reign of King Henry III, ending with a statement of the revenue in 1581, [1581-1589]; and a paper giving instructions on the powers and authority of the officers of the French Chambre des Comptes (Chamber of Accounts), [1589-1610]. The manuscript also contains papers relating to diplomatic negotiations during the Thirty Years War, comprising a speech on a peace assembly at Cologne, Italy, [1636], and a letter from the Swedish Chancellor Count Axel Greve Oxenstierna to the English Ambassador, Sir Thomas Roe, on the alliance between England and Sweden, 1638.

Manuscript volume containing a tract relating to usury by a Mr Sanderson, and a reply by Mr [John] Cotton, 1626. Reginald Rye, Goldsmith's Librarian of the University of London, stated that the former may have been written by Sir William Sanderson.

Manuscript volume containing 'A general abstract of the stamp duties for thirty years, ending the 2nd August 1764, distinguishing each year'. The abstract is signed 'Made out and carefully examined by I Harris, pro Comptroller'.

A school note book, 1668-96, used by various members of the Atkinson family. As well as notes on mainly classical studies the book contains accounts that appear to have been inccurred during the years of 1668-9 at Glasgow College.

The manuscript is addressed to the Contrôleur Général des Finances.

Manuscript volume written by Pierre Vordoni entitled 'Essai sur le rétablissement du crédit public et sur l'amortissement de la dette de l'état', 1820, giving his observations on the financial problems of European states and the need to reduce national debt and re-establish public credit. The manuscript is written in parallel text in French and German.

Manuscript Commonplace Book of English poetry and prose, dating from the 19th century, containing the second half of a long poem on early biblical history 'continued from the book in white forrel', and other items. Inserted is a folded leaf containing two poems, one dated 1834, by W. C. Yonge, who may have been the compiler of the volume.

The discharged account bears a note 'Settled in full November 11th 1800', and the signature of Thomas Hume. With a duplicate receipt for £181.18.0 signed by John Stockdale.

Manuscript relating to customs duties on alcoholic spirits imported to Quebec, Canada, 1762, entitled 'Account of all Spirituous Liquors paying Duty to His Majesty Entered inwards in the Port of Quebec in Canada between the 26th May & 31st August 1762, with the particular Quantity & Quality of Spirits & the Duties Levied thereon'. Signed by John Gray, Collector of Customs, and dated 31st Aug 1762. The manuscript is endorsed 'Amount of Duties on Spirituous Liquors. Quebec 31st Aug 1762.' The following ships are mentioned, together with their masters' names and the ports whence they had come: William and Sarah, Union, Sally and Lucy, William and Elizabeth, Juno, Hope, American, Success and La Rette.

Manuscript letter, dated 22 February, 1643, containing an Order of the Committee of Revenue to Thomas Fauconbridge, Receiver of Crown Revenues, to pay 'the poore Pewterers or Hammer men' of London the sum of £100, due to them by virtue of an Act of Parliament. The letter is signed by members of the Committee for Revenue, including Sir Henry Vane, Sir Henry Mildmay, Francis Rous, William Ashhurst, Thomas Hoyle and Dennis Bond. With a receipt dated 27 February 1643, bearing 56 signatures or marks and the signature of Robert Leeson, Warden of the Worshipful Company of Pewteres.

The collection contains account books recording purchases made by Captain Patrick Lawson in London, Madras and Canton. Also contains memoranda and accounts regarding the administration of his estate on behalf of his creditors from 1777 to 1799.

A letter to Dr. Charles Barham from F. Thrale, on behalf of Constantine Henry Phipps, 1st Marquess of Normanby, the Home Secretary appointing him sub-commissioner to the Commission on the Employment of Children.

Written on the blank leaves of a copy of Parker's Ephemeris for 1713. Notes from 1713-16 including the results of the poll in the elections for the County and Boroughs of Kent in September 1713 and February 1714. Also includes particulars of Sir Edward Filmer's expenditure on provisions for the latter election.

Five items dating from 1471-1476 and 1547 from the Veere Magistracy concerning the payment of monies. Manuscripts 4-7 are concerned with the parties John van Zantgaten and John Belt; manuscript 8 concerns a Scottish Conservator, John Moffat, and the Councillors of Veere.

Manuscript bill of expenses incurred by Charles Frotté for a journey from Istanbul (Constantinople) to London for King George III during July, 1801. With a receipt for £420.2.6. dated November 16th, 1801, and signed by Frotté.

Manuscript correspondence and other papers relating to the financial administration of Barbados and the Leeward Islands, 1669-1682, mostly concerned with the auditing of the accounts for the farm of the 4½% duty collected during the years 1670-77. The correspondents include: two farmers of the 4½% duty, Sir Charles Wheler and Colonel John Strode; [William Blathwayt], Auditor General of H.M. revenues in America; [Henry Guy], Secretary to the Treasury; and the governors of the Leeward Islands and Barbados.

Memorial signed by Thomas Wroe of Hollinwood near Manchester, cotton manufacturer, addressed to the Rt Hon Spencer Perceval and the Lords of the Treasury, seeking compensation for the loss of his steam-powered cotton mill at West Houghton, which was destroyed by a 'riotous mob', dated 24th April, 1812. Endorsed to the effect that there does not appear to be any means of indemnifying Mr Wroe.

Manuscript petition of William Courten, grandson and heir of Sir William Courten, the administrators and executors of Courten's estate (Sir Richard Mauleverer, Sir Erasmus de la Fountaine, Sir John Ayton, Maurice Thompson, Walter Deureux, Thomas Coppin and William Lloyd) and the rest of Courten's creditors, requesting compensation for the loss of Courten's estates in Barbados. The petitioners beg the king to compel the merchants who have unlawfully dispossessed Sir William Courten of his plantations in the Barbados to make redress to his creditors. Endorsed 'Peticion of Sr Richard Mauleverer & others abt the Barbados'; also, in another hand, 'Rec'd 13th Sept. 1671'.
