Arranging a meeting between themselves and Mr J Smith [John Gordon Smith, professor of medical jurisprudence] 'at the Crown & Anchor to set matters agoing'. Autograph, with signature. Endorsed in the hand of Sir Henry Thompson [surgeon, grandson of Medley] with a note stating that the meeting mentioned was 'a conference respecting the scheme for founding a Metropolitan University', [1857-1904].

Letter from Henry Tolcher of Plymouth to 'Most honble. Lord' [Peter King, Chief Justice of Common Pleas], 2 Sep 1720. Suggesting that 'unless a speedy method is taken to prevent the melting of the silver coin of this kingdom it is very likely that its scarcity so much of late complain'd of will be follow'd by a totall consumption of the same ... not less than fifty pounds sterling is to be gott by melting a thousand pounds of English silver coin which is easyly effectected [sic] and with security by almost any person in the space of an hour or two'.

(1) From Herman Hendriks of 2 Copthall Chambers, [London], 26 May 1836. Enclosing a document [?printed prospectus of the Haytien Banking Company]: '... if you felt disposed to join the Direction, after I had explained its nature to you, it would afford me pleasure'.

(2) From William Wildey of 3 Agar Street, Strand, [London], 28 Jul 1836. 'You were good enough to say some short time since, that when I was prepared to come before the public, with my substitute for horse-hair, that you would give me a helping hand in your valuable gazette ... I am now in that position, having a large quantity of the cocoa-nut fibre broke up.' Inviting inspection of articles filled with coconut fibre and encloses a printed prospectus which sets out its merits over other kinds of stuffing, with testimonials and a list of institutions using the fibre, including the police, prisons, hospitals and Poor Law Unions.

2 letters written to Frederic Seebohm. (1) From Richard Oliver Heslop, iron and steel merchant of Akenside Hill and Newcastle upon Tyne, 8 Feb 1886. Promising to send a tracing of a map of Corbridge, Northumberland; suggests sources bearing on the history of land tenure in Northumberland. (2) From [James] Saunders, of Clapham and Westminster, 20 Oct 1892. Covering letter sent with tracings of some common field systems, discussing land tenure.

Papers of Augustus de Morgan, 1859, comprise a letter to Mrs Bax [grandmother of the composer Sir Arnold Bax], enquiring whether she is comfortably settled at her new address; an obituary of Professor De Morgan is attached to the second sheet.

Papers of C de Bylands, 1888, comprise a letter to Mr [Henry Hucks] Gibbs. 'I received this morning with thanks the book of my friend [?Willem Frederik] Rochussen [i.e. 'Studies over Geld- en Muntwezen' (1888)] and your kind letter of Saturday last, the contents of which have much interested me; so much so, that I cannot resist the temptation of sending a copy of it to Mr Rochussen ...'.

Papers of Augustus Sauerbeck, 1893 and 1895, comprise two letters to Sir Guilford Molesworth; the first thanks him for a letter and two tables of production figures and discusses his own work: 'If you examine the real reduction in cost - not by opening up new countries - but by real scientific improvement, there is probably no important article in which the reduction has been so great as in the case of gold, where it pays now if you get 1/2oz or even less out of a ton of ore', 28 August 1893. The second letter refers to a forthcoming article on prices, to be published in the March issue of the Journal of the Statistical Society, 5 April 1895.

Papers of Anne Isabella Thackeray née Richie, [1863-1893], comprise four letters and one postcard to Mrs Jackson, Isabella [?Cole], Mrs James, Mrs Hugh Smith, Mrs Westlake. Items from both before and after Anne's marriage to Richmond T W Ritchie (1877) are included; the letters are dated with days of the week or dates and months, but the year is never given.

Manuscript volume containing a transcript of a treatise by Comte Goswin de Wynants, [1739], on the public charges made on the revenue of the provinces of Brabant and Limburg, Belgium. The treatise ends abruptly in the third chapter of a section on the role of the judicature in public charges. A table of contents was added in the late 18th century. There are some manuscript additions to the text, including a late 18th century table of contents.

Manuscript account book of Jones and Co, London cloth merchants, giving details of cloth sold from 18 Feb 1760-6 Mar 1775, and details of buyers. Most entries contain a sample of the cloth involved.

Manuscript volume containing a report signed by Thomas Irving, Inspector General of Customs, headed 'State of the navigation, revenues and commerce of Great Britain in the year 1790'. The report is addressed to William Pitt, Prime Minister, 12 Dec 1790.

Manuscript volume containing a tract entitled 'A concise account of the present state of the Spanish American colonies', [1805]. The manuscript appears to be a copy of a document written by a Spanish American, and is written with a view to invoking English intervention as a means of escape from the oppressive colonial policy of Spain, which it describes.

Manuscript volume containing a catalogue of books, pamphlets, business papers and parliamentary papers relating to the East India Company, [1813-1819], dating from the seventeenth century to 1813. There are additions in pencil throughout, the latest of which is dated 1819.

Manuscript volume, 1590, entitled 'A generall collection of all offices of England with their fees in the Queenes gifte', giving details of the offices in the courts at Westminster, the Royal Household, military posts, and posts connected with royal houses, parks and forests. The manuscript also includes a valuation of clergy livings and the tithes payable to Queen Elizabeth I. An eighteenth century index is included.

A series of letters from 1833-1836 concerning the possible establishment of a Bank of India. Letters included are from Horsley Palmer, Governor of the Bank of England, Sir Richard Carr Glynn, Thomas Tooke and James Cosmo Melvill.

Collection of manuscripts relating to bankruptcy, 1850-1851, comprising answers to questionnaires circulated by the Committee for the Improvement of the Law of Debtor and Creditor from business firms in Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA. Many of the replies are on printed questionnaires addressed to the Chairman of the Committee, William Hawes, MP.

Authenticated copy by Gobinet de la Court, tabellion (scrivener) royal of Laon, France, 31 Dec 1457, of letters of King Charles VII of France under the great seal dated at Tours on 31 Jul 1436, letters of the Generaux des Finances dated at Tours on 2 Aug 1436, and letters of the Gens de la Chambre des Comptes dated at Limoges on 16 Aug 1436, by which the Abbey of St Vincent was to pay to Poton, Lord of Xaintrailles and captain of royal troops in Laon, the sum of 3,000 livres for the prosecution of the war in return for an annual pension of 300 livres assigned on royal revenues in the Vernandois until the sum was repaid. An endorsement sets forth that the Dean and Canons of the Church of Our Lady at Laon have acquitted the King and all others concerned of the rent mentioned in the copied letters, and have delivered the originals to the King's Receiver.

Manuscript volume containing contemporary transcripts of theological works, [1560], namely 'Libellus introductorius in vitam contemplatium cui titulus Directorum paruum contemplari inchoantium', by Petrus Blomevenna, Prior of the Carthusian monastery of Cologne; an incomplete copy of a work on the Holy Eucharist, also by Petrus Blomevenna, entitled 'Enchiridion Sacerdotum'; and a copy of the acts and decrees of the Diocesan Synod convoked by Robert de Croy, Bishop of Cambrai in 1550.

Miscellaneous collection of deeds, bonds, indentures, correspondence and legal papers relating to London and the surrounding area, 1597-1774. Includes accounts for the building of 'Icknam Bridge' and for royal gardens, possibly St James's Park, [1650]; a fragmentary list of pictures in the house of Sir Godfrey Copley (d 1709), giving names of painters and dimensions of each work; valuations for work in Enfield Chase, Middlesex, 1728-1729; a rental for Southampton Row, 1731; various manorial documents for Enfield, 1718-1760, Hendon, 1623, Isleworth and Syon, 1662-1716, South Mimms, 1731, and Stanwell, 1670-1774.

Commonplace book, [1590-1620], containing contemporary transcripts of various notes, treatises and sermons. The first part of the volume comprises notes in Latin, Greek and English of a theological nature, initially organised under alphabetical headings. Among these notes is a transcript of instructions for secret agents in France, drawn up by Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, for three different agents in the period 1595-1596. The copyist has copied three separate documents to form a single continuous document. The first part of the transcript is composed of the directions given by the Earl to Dr Henry Hawkyns, who was sent to Venice late in 1595 to perforn espionage and quasi-diplomatic functions for Essex and Queen Elizabeth I. The second part of the document consists of the instructions to [Anthony] Ersfield or Eversfield, who was sent to Paris to gather intelligence for Essex at the end of 1595. The third and final part of the document comprises the directions drawn up by Essex for Robert Naunton, whom the Earl sent to study under Antonio Perez in France in early 1596. Other notes from the first part of the volume include 'Of artillery' and notes on ships headed 'On shipping', the latter comprising details of the Queen's charges for maintaining large ships. There is an index to this section which omits the theological notes. The second part of the volume includes transcripts of sermons delivered on 10 Mar 1588 at Greenwich before the Queen, on 'Queene's daye', 1588, and on Christmas day 1588 and 1589; notes on what to observe when travelling abroad; notes on minerals; notes on heraldry; notes taken 'out of an ould Cronicle in Waverly Abbey'; 'The copye of the Great Turkes stile which he commonly useth'; and 'The copye of the Emperor of Russia or Muscovy his stile', taken from a letter to King Edward VI in 1553. There is a table of contents to this section.

A petition, 1601, written by Keymer intended for Queen Elizabeth concerning the advancement of the fishing business. The second manuscript is concerned with international sea trade, 1620, principally between England and Holland and Denmark.

Journal book containing the 'proceedings of his Majesty's Commissioners for the lessening of his Majesty's charge and increase of his revenue', 11 Jul 1626-24 Nov 1627. These volumes deal with the efforts made to reduce the debts incurred by the King's Household. Particulars are given of the households both of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria. The entries relating to the Queen's household are of especial interest in view of the critical situation caused at this time by the dismissal of her French attendants and staff. Includes minutes of the 'Commissioners for selling and granting his Majesty's lands in fee farm' for 20-21 Sep and 5 Oct 1626. Volume II is inscribed 'Mr Whitaker's booke', referring to Lawrence Whitaker, Clerk of the Privy Council, 1624-1640.

Manuscript volume containing a notarial instrument, 16 Sep 1655, by Frederick Ixem of London, public notary, with attestations by Bright and Daniell, also public notaries, recording the appointment by the Treasurers and Collectors of Prize Goods (John Sparrow, Richard Blackwall and Humphrey Blake) of Captain Dean of Cork as attorney to receive sums owed by William Hovell of Kinsale, County Cork, and Humberson Hurst. Also includes a printed copy of an Act of Parliament of 17 Apr 1649, An Act for appointing Commissioners for sale of prize-goods.

Manuscript volume containing an Order in Council, 10 Feb 1656, signed by William Jessop, Clerk of the Council, concerning the appointment of a British consul at Tetuán, now in Morocco. The Order agrees to the recommendation made in a report by the Commissioners of the Admiralty and Navy that there should not be an official Consul at Tetuán, but that Nathaniel Luke should reside there in the nature of a Providore, and that General Blake should be empowered to commission captains of the Fleet sent there to treat with the Governor or magistrates upon such articles as shall be thought necessary to maintain free commerce with England.

Manuscript volume containing 'A particular of the several sets of Commissioners [of Excise] that have been commissionated from the first setting up of the duty', [1664], comprising a list of Commissioners from 11 Sep 1643 to 20 Mar 1664.

Manuscript volume containing transcripts of two tracts [by Sir Thomas Culpeper], [1673], mainly concerning banking and usury, entitled 'A familiar conference between three friends, Civis, Rusticus and Veridicus, concerning the late practice of the bankers and our present rate of interest for money', and 'The familiar conference continued between three friends concerning the present deadnesse of our markets'. These works were attributed to Culpeper by Halkett and Laing.

Manuscript volume containing a report giving a list of all the costs of the upkeep of a galley in a squadron, [1700-1750], requested by 'S R Gerosna', entitled 'Relazione distinta di tutta la somma che si spende e consuma per il manteninento di una galera dalla squadra di questa S R Gerosna'. Includes frequent references to the port at Malta, and to Sicily, Sardinia and other islands in the Mediterranean, and notes of advice for captains of galleys trading in the area.

Manuscript copy, [1786], of a work by Richard Payne Knight entitled An Account of the Remains of the Worship of Priapus, lately existing at Isernia, in the Kingdom of Naples...to which is added a discourse on the worship of Priapus, and its connexion with the mystic theology of the ancients, which was privately published and distributed by Payne Knight in 1786, who gave a copy to each member of the Dilettanti Society. The work, however, was so severely attacked by Thomas James Mathias that the author endeavoured to buy back all the copies. It is unclear whether this manuscript is the original of Payne Knight's work, or a copy made by another person following the publication of the work.

Manuscript account book for an estate at Darley, Yorkshire, 1813-1826, including prices for materials, repairs and labour for an estate comprising a house, garden, cottages, stables, farmlands, and St Catherine's Chantry. Some of the leaves have notes and figures in pencil.

Account book, 1611-1642 containing around 7000 entries relating to the manor of Barton, Berkshire, and Brockett Hall, Hertfordshire, giving prices for food, clothing, wages, education.

The collection contains two volumes. Volume one is entitled, 'Aboriginal State' and volume two, 'Improved Modern State'.

Manuscript volume containing writings on mathematics, [1668], and entitled 'The use of the rule and compass in drawings of lines, angles, parallels and geometrical superficial figures comprehended in eight practices, together with notes on decimal arithmetic, logarithms, mensuration, fortification, dialling and other branches of mathematics. The handwriting and watermarks are of the seventeenth century, and the date 1688 appears on the verso of leaf 68, where adjoining a 'Table for the declination of the sunne', is written 'Example for the 22th May 1668'. On leaf 112 appears 'A particular of all my mathematical instruments and the severall prices I paid for them'.

Accounts from 1743-1756 of Pasquini's estate, possibly near Senigallia, on the Adriatic north of Ancona (an envelope addressed to Pasquini at Senigaglia was found loose in the book).

Manuscript volume containing a collection of treatises and sermons on the Blessed Virgin Mary, dating from the mid-fifteenth century, and comprising a treatise beginning 'Caritatis radix flos et fructus est eternitatis fundamentum'; Speculum Beatae Mariae Virginis by Conrad of Saxony; a sermon by Saint Augustine of Hippo on the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary; a homily by Saint Anselm on the Feast of the Assumption; a sermon by Saint Augustine of Hippo for the Feast of Assumption; a note on the seven privileges of the Blessed Virgin Mary (possibly taken from the Speculum Beatae Mariae Virginis); and an incomplete copy of a sermon by Saint Ambrose on the Virgin Mary. The manuscript was written by various scribes in a mixture of book-hand and business-hand, probably in Germany.

Manuscript volume containing tracts on coinage by Leon Lee, [1628-1633], namely proposals on the coinage addressed to Richard Weston, 1st Earl of Portland and Treasurer of England, a paper outlining methods of preventing abuse of the coinage, and an explanation of the exchange. The volume also contains a [presumably unrelated] account of the reception of Princess Elizabeth of England, at Frankenthal, for her marriage to the Elector Palatine Frederick V, later King of Bohemia, Jun 1613.
