Compiled by C. T., M.D. Illustrated with a few small and roughly executed pen-drawings of alchemical apparatus. There are also some grotesque heads and faces. Mainly written in a small and difficult current hand with many contractions. Pp. 260-343 in Vol. I are by another hand. This seems to be a condensed version of the 'Enarratio methodica', 1678 by Eirenaeus Philaletha [cf. Ferguson: 'Bibliotheca Chemica', Vol. II, p. 191]. Copus (Martinus) [pseud. Albertus Magnus, St. Collectiones ex libro de animalibus, etc. (384-388). Densinger (A. B.). Geber ressuscité: an abbreviated version in French of the author's 'Geber redivivus' (394-406) [cf. Ferguson: op. cit., Vol. I, pp. 206, 207]. On p. 349 bis of Vol. II is a magical Hebrew 'Oratio angelica' written in Latin characters, there are other Latin charms, and one in French on p. 349. The compiler's initials are found on p. 178 of Vol. II in the form 'C.T.M.D.', and again on p. 279 of the same volume as 'C.T.d.m.'. There are several dates found in the second volume, the latest is 1683 on p. 26 and again on p. 27.

Papers of Sir Charles Putnam Symonds comprising correspondence, notes, reviews and photographs spanning the period 1954-1978; also reprints spanning 1917-1962.

This is not a large collection, with nothing except offprints representing Sir Charles's career before the mid 1950s and only five files of rather miscellaneous interest covering the years 1954-1977. Apparently at the request of Sir Charles all his case notes were destroyed at his death.

The collection of offprints is not complete; however, it seems probable that at least some of the missing items were among the papers printed in Studies in Neurology (London 1970).

Records of the Sydenham Medical Club includign treasurer's books, 1796-1923; list of members, 1791-1928 and photograph album, c 1900.

Surgical lecture and other notes taken by [H.M. Stumbles as a student at Edinburgh University] With numerous coloured sketches. The author is not named, but identification was provided by the donor. The first part of MS. 7881 (ff. 1-80) contains a fair-copy transcript of 21 surgical lectures, no doubt delivered at the Edinburgh Medical School where Stumbles was a student (MB, ChB 1902); this is followed by fair-copy notes on various diseases and conditions pertaining to surgery, including diseases of bones (ff. 81-83), fractures and dislocations (84-242, and in MS. 7882, ff. 1-12), diseases of the blood vessels (13-40), the lymphatic system (41-43), tumours (44-68), the osseous and articular system (69-139), diseases of muscle (141-168), venereal diseases (168-205), injuries and diseases of the nerves (206-239), and middle ear diseases (239-243). The source of the notes is not generally given, though `Harold Stiles MB' [Harold Jalland Stiles, assistant in Surgery, University of Edinburgh, 1889-1900] evidently delivered lecture IX (on anaesthetics), MS. 7881, f. 29, and his name is found again on f. 224 of MS. 7882. The implication is that this was a departure from the norm, and the bulk of the lectures, if not the other notes, presumably derive from John Chiene (1843-1923), Professor of Surgery at Edinburgh. Two cuttings from the British Medical Journal, 26 Nov. 1898 and 9 Jan. 1899, are bound into MS. 7882, ff. 85-86 and 138.

Tapes of interviews used as the basis for a BBC Radio 3 programme entitled 'Stuffing their Mouths with Gold', on the origins of the National Health Service, broadcast in 1982. A total of ten tapes, interviewees include Rt Hon Enoch Powell, MP, Minister of Health, 1960-1963, Frank Honigsbaum, historian of the NHS, Rt Hon Michael Foot MP, biographer of Aneurin Bevan.

Papers of Fred Stratton, 1959-2003. Section A, Biographical, is very slight. It presents obituaries of Stratton, his curriculum vitae and list of publications. Section B, Research, is not extensive. There is some general and miscellaneous material, including schemes for Medical Research Council trials from 1978, a little documentation of research work of colleagues C.M. Giles and A.H. Merry, and material relating to a proposed private/public cooperation on blood preservation. There are subsections relating to Stratton's interest in the rare condition Angioneurotic Oedema, and to the Working Party on the Standardisation of Antiglobulin Reagents, a joint working party of the International Society of Blood Transfusion and the International Centre for Standardization in Haematology. There is a short sequence of correspondence, chiefly relating to haematology, and non-textual material, principally slides but also including a photograph, marked 'Very valuable' of 'Haemolysing anti P'.

Section C, Lectures and publications, is the largest in the collection. It comprises principally a sequence of drafts 1959-1986, mostly relating to public and invitation lectures delivered worldwide - Stratton travelled widely - on blood transfusion topics. The bulk of the drafts date from the 1970s and 1980s. In preparing a lecture or paper Stratton corrected and revised his drafts extensively and the material bears witness to the care he took. The section includes some illustrative material, chiefly for slides for lectures, and offprints of some of Stratton's publications.

Section D, British Blood Transfusion Society, covers the period 1981-1991. It offers significant documentation of the conception and establishment of the BBTS - membership, constitution, funding, relations with other bodies - and its early days during Stratton's inaugural Presidency, including administrative papers, organisation of meetings, speeches given by Stratton at BBTS occasions and awards made. Section E, Visits and conferences, is a presentation of a little material relating to visits made and conferences attended. The range and frequency of Stratton's travel is better evidenced in section C; many of his lectures are noted as being delivered to overseas audiences or at international conferences. There is also an index of correspondents.

'A Booke of seuerall receipts / for severall infirmities both in Man and / Woman, and most of them eyther tryed by / my selfe or my wife, or my Mother / or approued by such persons as I / dare giue Credit vnto, that haue / Knowne the experiment of it / themselves'. Compiler's holograph MSS., with additions by other hands. Ff. 7-13 of the Index to Letter E contain 'SMELT (Rev. C.) A few precautionary hints to his parishioners on the subject of Cholera Morbus'. This was probably written in 1831, and the Author, Rector of Gedling in Notts from 1824, died in the same year. Mayerne and Bate are referred to as contemporary physicians. The latter is frequently named, as also are other persons of the same period, such as Bancroft, Bishop of Oxford, i.e. John Bancroft [1574-1648], who was made Bishop of Oxford in 1632.

Correspondence and papers of Dr David Stafford-Clark (1916-1999), relating to his war service as a medical officer in the RAF, and his later career as a psychiatrist, broadcaster and writer on mental health.

Papers relating to St Bartholomew's Hospital comprising receipts for half-yearly payments made to the Hospital by Bethie Abbot for the rent of tenements in Smithfield, signed by Peter Moulson, Renter of the Hospital, 1659-1665 and letter to the Governors of the Hospital from William Wood, Mayor of London, sending Mary Larner for examination and possible admission, the endorsement 'Hope' on the verso suggests that she was admitted to Hope ward, 23 April 1817.

Commentarius R.P. Joannis Specij Societatis Jesu in octo libros Physicorum Aristotelis. Ejusdem in Aristotelis de Coelo quatuor libros et in duos de Generatione et Corruptione libros. Exceptus a Fratre Jacobo Petro Plonacho Benedictino Ottenpurano. On the verso of fol. 111 of the second volume is a pen-drawn figure of the Aristotelian geocentric Universe. In the second volume, on both title-pages the date is written wrongly 'MDCXVI' for 'MDXCVI'. On the first t.p. of this volume alone is the surname 'Plonach' of the writer given. In Vol. I and elsewhere he appears as 'Frater Jacobus Peter' only. Produced in Dillingen.

Papers of Frederick Gordon Spear, 1908-1980. These papers fall naturally into several distinct groups; items pertaining to his radiological research conducted in Cambridge at the Strangeways Laboratory, materials about the Strangeways Laboratory as an institution, presumably accumulated during his many years as deputy director, papers relating to his connections with other bodies associated with radiology, such as the Hospital Physicists Association and the British Institute of Radiology, of which he was president in 1961, publications and unpublished papers by him, and also some publications by others on subjects related to the work he was doing.

A very small amount of material, not classifiable under these headings, has been put together in a 'Personal' section.

While Spear originally studied tropical medicine, and spent some time at the Baptist Mission Hospital at Yakusu in the Belgian Congo in the early 1920s this aspect of his career is not represented in these papers.

Received along with Spear's papers were a number of notebooks formerly belonging to his first wife Ada Louisa Sowerby, which she kept during her nurse and midwifery training in London in the later 1920s.

Two volumes: 'Institutiones medicae' and 'Institutiones medicae practicae'. The spines are inscribed 'Lib. I' and 'Lib II' in wrong order, as the 'Institutiones medicae practicae' labelled 'Lib I' should follow the 'Institutiones'. Notes of a course of lectures by an anonymous student: the date 1705 is found on p. 37 of the second volume. The text has been identified by comparison with MS. 4614, which contains a somewhat abbreviated version of the present first volume. Produced in Rome.

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence: the Singers were clearly vigorous letter writers and both Charles and Dorothea had an enormous number of family, friends and acquaintances. Unfortunately many of their letters were hand written and very few carbon copies survive. Very occasionally an attempt at methodical selection and arrangement is evident: on the whole correspondence had been kept in alphabetical order, and this has been retained in the arrangement of the collection. Dorothea and Charles' correspondence was fairly mixed (reflecting their working life together) with the exception of two distinct groups: correspondence about Dorothea's research on alchemical manuscripts, and later correspondence about her hearing aids.

The main part of the collection centres on the correspondence; this has been grouped together in a self-evident sequence: writings and biographical personal papers follow. Certain of Dorothea's papers remained clearly distinct and these have been kept together. Section E contains a variety of material relating to Jewish refugees, which had been placed on one side by Dorothea after the war for permanent preservation. It has not been listed in detail but sorted into three broad categories. The last section, comprising additional correspondence of the Singers with Sir Zachary Cope, Sir Arthur Salusbury MacNalty and Dr F N L Poynter, is not strictly part of the collection, but these groups of correspondence were given to the Institute to be placed alongside the Singer papers.

This material represents Dr. Simpson's MSc project for the London School of Economics, 1980, investigating patient satisfaction with the pioneering day-care abortion service provided by Mile End Hospital in east London. 37 women applying for an abortion and 13 who had had abortions at the clinic were interviewed in the summer of 1979 about their expectations and experience of the service. The collection consists of the text of the dissertation, plus a shorter version of the findings published in Social Work Today in 1982, some additional material, and the tapes of the interviews undertaken for the project. The tapes contain numbered interviews, and in some cases also numbers which relate to the specific women who were subjects of the research, but this has not been done consistently, and there is no key to or explanation of the system. Some of the tapes are dated, others are not, but all of the interviews took place in summer 1979.

Personal papers of the Silvester family, 1844-1905 including (auto)biographical details of the three, copy correspondence, and diary entries. Specifically: T H Silvester's notebook includes personal and professional details, there is also a draft medical paper on venous bruit; Paul de Hookham's papers are an autobiography; whilst Henry Robert Silvester's papers mainly relate to his work on the resuscitation of the apparently drowned or asphyxiated.
