Papers, 1831-1853, of Grace Aguilar. The first part of the collection consists of her manuscript notebooks. The second part is manuscript material in other hands, consisting of a book of tributes to Aguilar, a description of her last illness, and an account for the administration of her estate. The collection also contains copies of several of her printed works.

Papers, 1832-1968, of and relating to Soloman Marcus Schiller-Szinessy and his family, owned or created by Raphael Loewe. A file of documents from Hungary, 1832-1888, comprises personalia relating to Schiller-Szinessy's activities there, including school reports. A file on Schiller-Szinessy's time at Manchester includes correspondence and papers, 1851-1860, on the synagogues of the Manchester Old Hebrew Congregation and Congregation of British Jews, Manchester, and Schiller-Szinessy's association with them as rabbi. A file on Schiller-Szinessy's time at Cambridge comprises printed material, press cuttings, manuscripts, and correspondence of Raphael Loewe, and includes a letter to Schiller-Szinessy from Sir Moses Montefiore, 1883, replying to his ninety-ninth birthday greetings, and an unpublished manuscript by Schiller-Szinessy (in German), 1888, on 'Der Neue Catalog Der Hebraischen Handscriften In Der Bodleiana'. A file on Schiller-Szinessy's contribution to the Jewish press, 1850-1890, includes press cuttings of his articles and typescript notes on his work. A file on Schiller-Szinessy's other publications includes printed copies and press cuttings of his writings from 1845. A file on the marriage, offspring and death of Schiller-Szinessy comprises a letter from H Samuel to Schiller-Szinessy, 1861; papers relating to his marriage, 1863, and other family papers; a photograph of him, 1888; undated photographs of his daughters Henrietta and Eleanor; a photograph, 1963, of his gravestone; cuttings and other printed papers on his death, 1890, including letters of condolence to his wife; notes, cuttings and correspondence, 1962-1968 and undated, of Raphael Loewe on Schiller-Szinessy, including biographical information. The archive consists of the official working papers of the Chief Rabbinate from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Files, volumes, bundles of papers, photographs, prints, video tapes, publications and leaflets make up the bulk of the collection. The Chief Rabbis represented in this collection are Nathan Adler (1868-1901), Hermann Adler (1868-1921), Joseph Hertz (1899-1946), Israel Brodie (1917-1967), Immanuel Jakobovits (1913-1992) and Jonathan Sacks (1988-2004). Also included are some papers of the Deputy for the Chief Rabbi, Harris Lazarus (1942-1950).

The archive is primarily concerned with the activities of the Chief Rabbinate. Because of the cosmopolitan nature of the office there are files on Jewish congregations overseas which are of interest, also some papers on the Holocaust and its immediate aftermath (ACC/2805/06/05/1-11). The varying interests of individual Chief Rabbis are reflected in the collection: for instance Immanuel Jakobovits' role in Jewish medical ethics.

Records of the Soup Kitchen for the Jewish Poor, 1872-1980. The collection includes minute books of the general and other committees, and many account books, although there is little material which relates to the early days of the charity. There is a large amount of correspondence relating to all aspects of work of the charity.

Records of the New Road Synagogue, Whitechapel, 1924-1974. With the exception of the two minute books the majority of the records date from the mid 1960s, when J. Lindsay took over as Secretary of the New Road Synagogue. He remained in post until the amalgamation in 1974. The correspondence files are those which were maintained by J. Lindsay. Their contents reflect the wide range of duties undertaken by members of the Synagogue within the Jewish community.

Records of the Jewish Health Organisation of Great Britain, comprising committees, case histories, personnel and general correspondence.

Two volumes of press cuttings from Anglo-Jewish newspapers, concerning aspects of Jewish life; and from national and international newspapers concerning Chief Rabbi Nathan Adler and his successor Chief Rabbi Herman Adler, 1872-1901.

Records of the Court of the Chief Rabbi, London Beth Din, 1904-1988. The bulk of the archive transferred to London Metropolitan Archives are the administrative papers and general correspondence of the Court, and in particular that of the Clerks and Registrar. There are also files concerning consultations the Beth Din undertook with the Government on the Matrimonial and Family Proceedings Bill in the 1980s. Some correspondence and rough notes of the individual Dayanim and records relating to work done with refugees in the Second World War have also been deposited.

Records of the Westminster Synagogue, 1902-2005. The records consist of minutes of the Council, Executive Committee, Search Committee, House and Building Committee and Annual General Meetings; correspondence; publications and printed material, reports and newsletters; and papers of Rabbi Harold Reinhart, Rabbi Albert Freidlander and Rabbi Thomas Salamon.

Records of the Rabbinical Commission for the Licensing of Shochetim, including Commission minutes; general correspondence and correspondence with Shechita Boards.

Records of the Hayes Certified Industrial School for Jewish Boys, later known as Finnart House School, comprising a series of annual reports covering the years 1902 to 1938 (with gaps) and minute books from 1939 to 1973, which include sections devoted to accounts and to payments made to staff.

Typescript text in German entitled 'Beziehungen zu Nichtariern' ('Relationships with non-Aryans'), dated Jul 1945, relating to the treatment of Otto Hahn's Jewish friends and colleagues in Germany, 1933-1945. Also a copy of his biography, Mein Leben (Bruckmann, Munich, Germany, 1968).

Papers of Rabbi Bernard Susser relating to the survey of Alderney Road Cemetery done in 1993-1997, including notes, illustrations and working papers.

Records of the Grand Order of Israel and Shield of David Friendly Society. The records relate to the administration of the Society, property investments and the social aspects of the Society, for example, there are files relating to the Annual Dinner and Ball, quizzes and newsletters.

The collection chiefly comprises material relating to the latter part of Hodgkin's life, the 1850s and 1860s, following his marriage to Sarah Frances Scaife. Included are items relevant to Hodgkin's marriage and personal life (his marriage certificate, letters to his wife, miscellaneous papers relating to him and his wife, papers related to the subsequent history of the Scaife family and a Hodgkin pedigree book); papers relating to Hodgkin's lobbying and philanthropic activities during the years of his marriage; and a memorandum on the relationship of religion and physiology, drafted during this late period of his life but based upon discussions with Samuel Tuke that took place in 1821, while Hodgkin was still a student.

Papers of Dr Max Dienemann, [1928-1936], comprise cuttings including one from Jüdisch liberale Zeitung showing article by Dr Dienemann, 'Das jüdische Ehescheidungsrecht' (Jewish divorce right), 1928; typescript essay by Dr Dienemann concerning divorce, entitled 'Die Ehescheidung auf bürgerlichen und jüdischen Recht', containing corrections and annotations, undated, and manuscript notes on the subject of Jewish divorce, by Dienemann, undated.

Papers of Norbert Masur, 1945, 1993, comprise a report describing a meeting between Norbert Masur and Himmler in Berlin, 20 April 1945 concerning the release of female prisoners from Ravensbrück concentration camp, and correspondence regarding Norbert Masur's report, 1993.

Papers concerning the suicide and murder of German Jewish doctors, c 1933-c 1939, comprising a list detailing the names of such individuals.

Correspondence of Elise Steiner and other family papers, 1938-1940. The collection documents the day to day activities, hopes and aspirations of a Jewish family in Vienna on subjects including gratitude that at least one child was able to escape and moreover to continue with her education; efforts to find a place on the Kindertransport for Leo Steiner; news of the fate of other family members who had managed to emigrate to various countries and the takeover of the family business. Despite the increasing difficulties of life in Vienna exemplified by the occasional suicide of friends and the growing fear of being out on the streets, there is a sense that life has to go on. Mention is made of the celebration of Jewish festivals and of training for new occupations. Whilst the prospect of emigration recedes, the family continues to make preparations for a future departure by selling off possessions and studying English.

There are descriptive summaries of all the letters (in German). Other papers comprise a typescript copy of the family tree, a copy of typescript notes on Steiner family history and a copy of a photograph.

Letters from friends and family to Siegfried Grossbard, 1922-1962, on topics including the Richborough Internment Camp and the German Jewish Aid Committee; reference to Lingfield Internment camp and of experiences as an internee in Australia; brother-in-law, Erwin's account of survival of the occupation in France; conditions in Germany during the immediate postwar era, from ex-internee, Roger Freeman; claims for restitution relating to the Aryanisation of the Grossbard family business; and letters from Otto Morawetz to Grossbard regarding family and friends and life in the USA.

Fate of Hungarian Jewry collection, 1943-1994, notably comprises a copy memorandum to Secretary Morgenthau, (copy of original which dates from 1943) (1151/1), concerning his request to review developments regarding the World Jewish Congress' programme for the evacuation of Jews from Romania and France; copy of a letter from JW Pehle, Executive Director of the War Refugees Board, to J. Mcloy, Assistant Secretary of War, (copy of original which dates from 1944) (1151/4), enclosing copies of eye-witness accounts of Auschwitz and Birkenau received from the Board's special representative in Bern recommending the bombing of the camps; memorandum to the Assistant Secretary of War regarding suggestion of bombing camps, setting out 5 reasons why this is not recommended (copy of original which dates from 1944) (1151/5) and a copy of a transcript of a secret memorandum from the American Legation in Stockholm to the Secretary of State, Washington, regarding gassing and deportation of Hungarian Jews (copy of original which dates from 1944) (1151/6).

Collection of documents regarding aliens in the British Army during World War Two, 1940s, comprises of the contents of a folder originally entitled 'Non-British Ex-Servicemen Association: Archives, H. Weisbord'. The collection notably includes newspaper cuttings relating to the experiences of Jewish ex-servicemen, 1940s (1158/1), arranged according to the following categories: grievances, naturalisation, tributes, pensions appeal tribunals, demobilisation, slanderous statements, miscellaneous and cuttings; copy of pamphlet entitled 'Conditions of Service in British Army for Refugees and other Aliens', (copy of original [1940s]) (1158/3) issued by Jewish Refugees' Committee, National Service Department; copy of extract from Hansard regarding debate about internees (copy of original [1940s]) (1158/4); copy of newspaper articles regarding non-British servicemen in the British Army (copy of original [1940s]) (1158/5).

Papers of Julian Lehmann, chiefly comprising press cuttings from German language newspapers 1916-1930s on topics including the life and work of contemporary Jewish personalities such as Freud, Einstein and Stefan Zweig and articles of a general Jewish interest. In addition there are a number of draft typescript articles and notes, either clearly authored by Julian Lehmann or written on headed note paper with his name, on subjects ranging from obituary notices to the experiences of German Jewish immigrants to Great Britain during the Nazi era.

Papers documenting the activities of Lt Col Julian Layton in assisting German Jewish refugees before the Second World War and internees during the war, 1936-1993, including official papers regarding the internment of refugees including HM Government printed orders mostly on aliens, internment and refugees, notably a report of a Parliamentary Delegation into conditions at Buchenwald concentration camp immediately after liberation, 1939-1945.
