Records of the Worshipful Company of Butchers. Apart from deeds, charters and wardens' accounts (the latter starting in 1543/4), the company's records date from the later 17th century; court minutes begin in 1682, freedom admission registers in 1658 and apprentice binding registers in 1654. Other records include Beadles' summoning books; livery books; correspondence; legal case papers; papers relating to charities and charitable bequests; and papers relating to property including inventories.

Note that many loose papers, relating to every aspect of the Company's business, and dating from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century, were gathered together, sorted and placed in 277 boxes and a further ca.430 bundles by the Company in ca.1925-30. Most of these boxes, and all surviving bundles, were deposited in the Manuscripts Section in 1996, and their arrangement has been retained with minimal alteration as Mss 34100-1. For schedules of these papers see Ms 34102. Readers should therefore be alert to the possibility that papers on any particular subject of interest to them may be contained within these two series, but obscured because the online catalogue does not include the detailed list contained in Ms 34102, though cross-references from the rest of the catalogue have been provided where possible.

Written permission from the Clerk of the Company is required for access to post-1965 material deposited in the Manuscripts Section, and for a few items of an earlier date which remain confidential.

Records of Catering Services (Newark) Limited, comprising register of seals; one entry only.

Records of the Tailors Benevolent Institution. Despite a few gaps in the minute books, the most regrettable being the absence of the first minute book, the records give a clear picture of the development of a trade benevolent enterprise. The gaps are in part compensated for by the survival of accounts and cash books from the foundation of the institution and by a diary for 1837 belonging probably to the first secretary. The records are in good condition.

Records include papers relating to the Gibbs family; correspondence, letters and letter books; ledgers and other financial records; papers and correspondence of branches in Peru, Chile, Australia, the West Indies, New York, Bristol and Liverpool; memoranda; trading agreements; minutes and reports; papers relating to the guano business and papers relating to the iodine industry.

Correspondence with foreign branches will be found in a number of different points in the catalogue. A keyword search of the online catalogue by the name of the branch and 'Gibbs' is the easiest access to branch correspondence.

Records of R S Murray and Company Limited, sweet manufacturers, including recipe books, reports and related correspondence. The recipe books include details of product development, specifying appropriate ingredients and methods. Other papers concern H.J. Norton, who was Managing Director of R.S. Murray and Co. Ltd from 1914-1940s.

The records of the National Discount Company Limited, discount bankers, comprise minutes, lists of directors and chairmen, accounts, papers and photographs. The majority of the archives date from the latter years of the company's operations; much earlier material was destroyed in accordance with the company's policy on non-current records (see Ms 18199). However, some classes of record survive complete from 1856.

Dissertations on various subjects, probably all by Joachimus Castaldus of Naples on 'De Morbis', 'De Morbis Puerorum', 'Pharmaceutica' and 'De febribus malignis'.

The papers of Frederick Parkes Weber, 1886-1962, consist of case notes from his Harley Street and German Hospital practices, some very fine annotated clinical photographs, and (the bulk of the collection) a large number of volumes and bundles dealing with a vast array of diseases and medical conditions, usually accreted around an original paper by Parkes Weber himself. He described how these 'small collections and bundles around kernels of my earliest writings on the subject' evolved in a letter to the Librarian, Wellcome Historical Medical Museum, 27 Feb 1958: "I was in the habit of surrounding my own writings with manuscript and printed correspondence, and all kinds of cuttings and small articles bearing on the subject. Many interesting autograph letters and small essays have in this way become buried and practically altogether lost." These had become 'gradually very extensive, and many of them have become dislocated and unmanageable'. On examination they have been found to include reprints and cuttings of articles, case notes, notes and annotations, correspondence, and photographs. There is also material on more general philosophical questions, and relating to his book Aspects of Death and other publications, and a little personalia and correspondence. Diaries apparently received with the papers were returned to Parkes Weber late in 1958 to assist in the preparation of the notes published as Miscellaneous Notes (see PP/FPW/D.11) and seem never to have been returned to the Wellcome Library (Parkes Weber to Dr Poynter, Wellcome Historical Medical Library, 24 Dec 1958 and 11 Feb 1959). This is a collection of major importance for the medical historian.

Parkes Weber had a very active life during a period of unprecedented developments in medicine. He produced well over 1000 articles, and was particularly interested in rare diseases and conditions: conditions with which he is eponymously associated are Rendu-Osler-Weber disease (familial telangiectasis), Weber's diseases (localised epidermolysis bullosa), Weber-Klippel syndrome (haemangiectatic hypertrophy of limbs), Weber-Christian disease (relapsing febrile nodular non-suppurative panniculitis) and Sturge-Weber-Kalischer disease (angioma of brain revealed by radiography). His papers also include much on more common ailments and phenomena, on balneological and climatological treatment, healthy life-style and the promotion of longevity, social medicine, etc. His associates and colleagues included many of the great names in medicine of his day.

10 reel to reel tape recordings relating to Joan Malleson's sex therapy, c early 1950s. These tapes relate to her pioneering early work in sex counselling. There are no identifying details of the individuals interviewed. The detailed descriptions are based on her annotations made on the boxes of the original reel-to-reel-tapes.

Personal papers of medical and other staff at Great Ormond Street hospital, comprising GOS/11/1 Dr Charles West, including cases seen at the Waterloo Dispensary prior to his Great Ormond Street career, circa 1841-1859; his notebook on Gynaecology, and maternal conditions liable to affect childbirth, from circa 1841, photographs, press cuttings, correspondence, and printed circulars and reports relating to Dr West's dispute with the Committee of Management about aspects of the Hospital's administration, 1877-1878. GOS/11/1/11 includes letters and photographs of Dr West and his family, largely donated by Dr Peter West. And the manuscript text of R Clavering's notes on Dr West and the establishment of the Hospital, 1956.

GOS/11/2 comprises a letter from Archibald Bence-Jones concerning the role of his father, Dr Henry Bence-Jones, in the establishment of the Hospital, 1906; GOS/11/3 comprises the letter of resignation from Catherine J Wood, Hospital Matron, 1878-1888 and biographical data on her.

GOS/11/4 comprises the papers of Dr. Frederick John Poynton, 1933-1941; GOS/11/5, those of Dr Felix Besser, dermatologist (some donated by his son, Dr. Michael Besser), including correspondence, obituaries of Great Ormond Street Hospital staff, pamphlets, typescripts, and material on the foundation and history of the hospital, 1933-1977; GOS/11/5/26* contains literature and correspondence on pachyonychia congenita, and includes correspondence with the University of Dundee on named patients.

GOS/11/6/1 is the presentation book to Sir Arthur Lucas on his retirement as Chairman of the Board of Governors, 1921, signed by Governors and senior clinical staff; GOS/11/7 /1 is correspondence and a copy Trust Deed for the Alexander Simpson-Smith Memorial Lectureship, 1947, including correspondence with Margaret Simpson-Smith about the Lectureship, 1957.

GOS/11/8 contains the papers of John Wycliff Peck, hospital pharmacist, including correspondence, photographs and memorabilia of Mr. Wycliff Peck, Hospital Pharmacist, 1894-1935, including correspondence concerning the supply and invention of drugs and equipment, and his own invention of 'Pexuloid' Splints, 1912; published programmes and leaflets concerning Hospital events; leaflets of pharmaceutical suppliers to the Hospital.

GOS/11/9 comprises Mr. Thomas H Kellock's personal papers, 1836-1922; GOS/11/10 is a presentation book given to Mr McKay on his retirement as Hospital Secretary,1932, signed by staff and Board members.
