The collection covers both Pettigrew's medical and antiquarian activities, which are intermingled in the material's arrangement. The medical items include correspondence with many medical figures, medical jurisprudence (an Anniversary Oration delivered to the Medical Society of London), corpulence, hydrophobia, medical observations by army officers in India, and an autobiographical memoir of the philanthropist and prison-reformer James Neild (1744-1814), transcribed by Pettigrew and incorporated into his life of John Coakley Lettsom M.D. The antiquarian items include material on Kett's Rebellion, Hindu deities, the library of the Duke of Sussex and correspondence with the Italian antiquary Giovanni Spano (1803-1878) and Gaetano Cara, as part of Pettigrew's role as Vice-President of the British Archaeological Society. Types of material held include notebooks, loose papers, correspondence and diplomas.

Aurore australe de Théophraste A[u]réole Paracelse Archydoxes magiques contenans l'Art de la Chryzopée. Illustrated with a few rough pen-drawings of alchemical apparatus, etc. Written in French, German, and Latin by the same hand throughout, this manuscript contains alchemical, chemical and iatro-chemical receipts and extracts from the works of Paracelsus and his followers. The latest dated receipt, 1748, is found on p. 697 of Vol. I: the 104 ll. at the end of Vol. II contain a copious index.

Personal correspondence and papers of Louis Pasteur, 1792-1927. The papers also include Pasteur and Magnan family correspondence and a collection of newspaper cuttings papers relating to Pasteur. The correspondence includes letters from Pasteur to his assistant Fernand Boutroux; Jules Raulin; Jules Vercel; Eugène Viala. The papers relate to research and publications. Subjects covered in the correspondence and papers reflect his research in fermentation, his study of rabies and of inoculation. There are also papers re Pasteur's work on the diseases of silkworms.

Praxeos medicinae libri II-IV. Authore D. D. Paschale Pisciottano, ad usum Joachimi de Angelis. Lecture-notes of a student at Naples University, of which Vol. I is wanting. The lectures are all by Pisciottanus except the second in Book IV 'De morbis venereis', which is by Francesco Dolce: and the last of the same Book 'De herniis', given by Agnello Firelli. Contents: Praxeos liber II. De morbis pectoris (1 l. + 37 ff. + 3 ll. (last 2 bl.)). III. De morbis abdominis (1 l. + 144 ff. + 4 bl. ll.). IV. De febribus. De morbis venereis. De morbis mulierum. Collection of extracts on the Plague, from the earliest times to 1687. An encyclopaedic collection of excerpts from works of physicians and others who have written on the subject, with references in each case to the books consulted: it includes also notes of prescriptions for prevention and cure, and is for the most part in Latin, though there are also extracts from English writers.

A collection of extracts and notes on alchemy, with a detailed account of the unidentified author's own experiments. This set of MSS. seems to have been begun in 1828 [cf. Vol. I] and the latest date found is in Vol. V, p. 102 'Aujourd'hui 1. Ap. 1834'. On fol. 772 of Vol. I he speaks of having been engaged on alchemical researches 'pendant plus de 30 ans', and on pp. 74-77 of the same volume, he gives details of various experiments and processes tried out from 1810 to 1825.

Avec l'Antidotaire. Le tout reduict en ordre pour suppléer au véritable Médecin, et mis en pratique par F[rère] Is[aac] Q[uatroux] R[éligieux] M[édecin] or[dre] M[inime]. These MSS., now divided into two volumes, formed originally one volume. There is a pen-drawn historiated frontispiece to the 'Antidotaire': texts within black rules. The Antidotire is dated 1662, the other volume 1663.

Journals of holiday tours in the years 1868-1892. In general the destination was Switzerland, the journey there and back from England taking in, at various times, parts of Belgium, Germany, Austria-Hungary (specifically Bohemia and the Tyrol), Italy and France. Exceptions are MS.4507, documenting a tour taking Sewell to South-West France; MS.4508, taking him to the United States and Canada; MS.4512, taking him to Norway; MS.4513, taking him to Northern England, Scotland and Ireland; and MS.4515, taking him to Southern England and the Isle of Wight. The journals are illustrated with inset material such as advertisments, photographs and folding maps.

Personal papers of the Silvester family, 1844-1905 including (auto)biographical details of the three, copy correspondence, and diary entries. Specifically: T H Silvester's notebook includes personal and professional details, there is also a draft medical paper on venous bruit; Paul de Hookham's papers are an autobiography; whilst Henry Robert Silvester's papers mainly relate to his work on the resuscitation of the apparently drowned or asphyxiated.

Two volumes: 'Institutiones medicae' and 'Institutiones medicae practicae'. The spines are inscribed 'Lib. I' and 'Lib II' in wrong order, as the 'Institutiones medicae practicae' labelled 'Lib I' should follow the 'Institutiones'. Notes of a course of lectures by an anonymous student: the date 1705 is found on p. 37 of the second volume. The text has been identified by comparison with MS. 4614, which contains a somewhat abbreviated version of the present first volume. Produced in Rome.

'Trattato di chirurgia'. Lettered on spine 'Instituzioni Chirurgiche': an unnamed student's notes of lectures taken from the lectures Gaetano Termanini. Produced in Bologna, c 1815.

Splendor Solis, alchemical treatises of Solomon Trismosin, adept and teacher of Paracelsus. Including allegorical pictures reproduced from the original paintings on vellum, dated 1582, in the British Museum. With introduction, elucidation of the paintings, aiding the interpretation of their occult meaning, Trismosin's autobiographical account of his travels in search of the Philosopher's Stone, a summary of his alchemical process called 'The Red Lion', and [explanatory notes]. By Julius Kohn. Two typescript copies, one on large 4to. sheets mounted, and prepared for the press, with the Editor's holograph corrections and additions: the other on folio typing-paper. The last illustration (No. 22) has been cut out. There are 21 photographic illustrations, of which Nos. 16, 19-24 have been coloured by hand. The folio set does not include the illustrations, but has the title-page and preliminary matter, which are missing in the 4to. set. The MS. from which this edition is transcribed is B. M. Harley 3469.

Two volumes of notes, in Latin comprising 'Collegium formulare habitum ab illustri Domino Georgio Wolfgangio Wedelio. A.O.R. MDCXCIV coeptum Die 19 Novembris'. The last four leaves contain an account of a 'Zermabschwechtende hitzigen Fieber', which broke out in 1696. At the end of the main text 'Finit die 27 April 1695'. On the t.p. is an inscription 'Sorte obtinuit Johannes Philippus Huth, Doctor Fridburgensis in Wetterau. 1712. 14 Novembris'. MS. No. 4984, a copy of Wedel's 'Collegium casuale', 1695-98, has a similar inscription on the t.p. in which it is stated that the MS. was inherited by J. P. Huth from his uncle Philippus Huth, Doctor at Gemersheim 1712, who was probably the compiler of both these MSS. At the end of this MS. is inserted a printed leaflet containing an account of a disturbance in the city of Thorn between Polish and German students on 16 July 1724. (This leaflet is entered in the Catalogue of Printed Books, s.v. 'THORN'.) and 'Collegium casuale' (in two books). 'Collegium therapeuticum'. The two folding leaves have been inserted, and contain a 'Tabula de methodo consultandi epistolari et renunciatoria'. On the recto of the first of these is written 'Collegium casuale a chymista Wedelio habita' and below this 'Sorte obtinuit hoc manuscriptum ex hereditate beati Domini Patruelis Philippi Huth, Medicinae Doctoris et Physici Germersheimensis 1712. 14 Septembris. Johannes Philippus Huth'. The second inscription is by a different hand from that of the text. A similar inscription is found in MS. No. 4983, Wedel's 'Collegium formulare', 1695-96. At the end of the second book of the 'Collegium casuale' is written 'Finit. Anno [16]98 die 23 Januarii', and at the beginning of the 'Collegium therapeuticum' 'Mense Maii 1695 inceptum'.

Health passes (fedi di sanità) issued to the Cavalier Giovanni Francesco Buonamici of Prato, and his servants, for various journeys in time of plague. Issued by the health authorities of Genoa, Lucca, Pisa, Florence, Bologna, Ferrara and Rome, 1630-1633 and health pass issued to Luca Ceccami of Lupinaia by the Conservatori di Sanità of Lucca, 21 Nov 1713.

Morrison and Hobson family papers, 1807-1963. The papers are the product of a period of considerable spiritual, cultural and political change in China. They are a significant source for study of the development of Protestant missions in China (in particular the role of the medical mission and the introduction of Western medicine), and also provide evidence of the involvement of the missionaries with issues of British trade and diplomacy.

MSS. 5827-5852: correspondence and papers, especially of the Revd Robert Morrison (1782-1834), missionary in China, 1807-1834; John Robert Morrison (1814-1843), Chinese interpreter, Colonial Secretary of the Hong Kong government; and Dr Benjamin Hobson (1816-1873), medical missionary in China, 1839-1859. The majority comprise personal and domestic correspondence of the Morrison and Hobson families and their friends, with less emphasis on official papers, although the collection includes letters on the Peacock expedition to Siam and Cochin China led by Edmund Roberts (1784-1836), United States merchant and diplomat, 1832 (MS.5830), and letters to Benjamin Hobson from leading missionaries. 1843-1862 (MS.5839). Insight into missionary work in China can be gained in particular from the letters of the Revd. Robert Morrison. MS. 7127: 'Domestic Memoir of Mrs Morrison', by the Revd. Robert Morrison, addressed to his children Mary Rebecca and John Robert Morrison (1814-1843), 5-7 January 1824. Mary Morrison, Robert's first wife, died of cholera at Macao on 10 June 1821. This memoir was compiled by Robert Morrison during the voyage home from China aboard H.E.I.C.S. Waterloo.

Production books of an English manufacturing apothecary or chemist, 1741-1795, recording batches of compound medicines produced, with the cost of each ingredient and overall manufacturing costs. Internal evidence (including a list of suppliers of simples, mainly in the London area, on the rear paste-down of MS. 5941) suggests that the volumes were compiled in London.

Lecture and laboratory notes, and miscellaneous papers of Sir Thomas Lauder Brunton, especially concerning his work in physiology, pharmacology and therapeutics, 1862-1915.

Papers of John Silk including minute book of the anaesthetists of Guy's Hospital Dental School, of which Silk was Secretary, Sep 1889-May 1895 and correspondence of J F W Silk with Frederic William Hewitt [afterwards Sir Frederic], anaesthetist, and related papers, concerning an allegation of plagiarism.

Prescription books [of William Martindale], 1885-1890. A number of the prescriptions are in fact recipes, including formulae for Sir Joseph Lister for cyanide of mercury and zinc in suspension (e.g. no. 2000), and another for '[Franz] Ziehl's stain for the tubercle bacillus' (no. 2600). Also included are reports on the analysis of drinking water at Winchelsea and elsewhere by John Attfield, Professor of Practical Chemistry at the Pharmaceutical Society, and by Dr Charles Meymott Tidy (nos. 2438-2439, 2892, 2979, 3035).

Notes on surgical lectures [given in London] by Henry Cline, and taken by an unnamed student. The text, neatly written in a uniform hand, is possibly a fair copy of notes taken at an earlier date. Dated watermarks are partially visible on the outer margin of leaves (e.g. MS. 6009, f. 98, where the date 1821 seems discernible).

Correspondence, papers and journals of Charles Tilstone Beke, 1824-1910, principally relating to Abyssinia and the Middle East, with papers of his wife Emily Beke (née Alston). The collection holds information on all aspects of Beke's career, from his early legal training to the search for employment and financial security of his final years. His intervening travels, geographical and biblical studies and resulting publications are documented by journals, notebooks and printed material. Correspondence includes that generated during Beke's secretaryship of the National Association for the Protection of Industry and Capital throughout the British Empire; and generally reflects a wide range of scholarly acquaintance and interests. Supplementary papers of Emily Beke record her championing of C.T. Beke's posthumous reputation, and her attempts to gain recompense for his occasional government service.

'Cosarelle da me praticate et esperimentate', a collection of medical receipts. The title as given above is taken from the Dedicatory Epistle.

Letters and papers of Charles George Gordon, known as 'Chinese Gordon' and later 'Gordon of Khartoum', with related letters by his brother, Colonel S.E. Gordon, and Captain C Orde Browne, 1856-1884.

The letters and papers document many aspects of Gordon's career, including his service in China and the Sudan. They shed light on his political views, religious faith and personal ambitions and are especially important in showing his interest in biblical history and archaeology.

The letters were largely addressed to fellow officers in the Royal Engineers.

Manuscript copies of texts by, or collated by Ruffo, plus in some cases other veterinary texts added to works by Ruffo. The texts reflect his work in veterinary medicine, primarily concerning the care and treatment of domestic animals, particularly horses. Includes 'De medicina equorum'; 'Arte de conoscere la natura dei cavalli'; 'Libro dell'infirmita dei cavalli' and 'Le medicine de' cavalli'.
