Part one of manuscript of paper, 'On the geology of portions of the Turko-Persian frontier and of the districts adjoining' by William Kennett Loftus, [1854-1855], from research conducted during Loftus' tenure as part of the joint Turco-Persian frontier commission between 1849-1852. Also large volume containing the manuscript watercolour and ink drawings of landscapes and geological sections, which illustrated the paper, by Loftus and Henry Adrian Churchill who was the secretary of the British contingent of the joint commission, [1849-1855].

Material reflecting the more personal aspect of Pickles' life. Includes medals, prizes and awards presented to Pickles in recognition of his work, and the related certificates and correspondence; material about Pickles created by others, including 'Will Pickles of Wensleydale: The Life of a Country Doctor' (1970) the official biography by John Pemberton; correspondence regarding the painting of Pickles portrait, in 1954, for the College of General Practitioners (later the Royal College of General Practitioners); articles and letters regarding significant events in his life, such as his 80th birthday, and his death, in 1969, and the ensuing obituaries. The collection consists of approximately 100 items on alchemy and early chemistry, the most notable item being De Secretis Mulierum. The collection also includes manuscripts of lectures given by Sir Henry Roscoe; his notes on solar chemistry work; letters written to him by a number of his peers and his notebook from 1849. The many volumes of letters in the collection includes correspondence with contemporaries such as Robert Bunsen, Michael Faraday, Dmitri Mendeleeff and Louis Pasteur as well as with a number of Presidents of the Chemical Society and the Royal Institute of Chemistry.

Papers of Gertrude Tuckwell, mainly relating to her period with the Women's Trade Union League (WTUL), c.1890-1921. Papers of Professor Albrecht Fröhlich, 1916-2001, reflecting his mathematical research, publications and correspondence with colleagues. Papers are divided into six sections comprising biographical papers; research papers; publications; papers relating to visits, conferences and lectures; correspondence and theses and examinations.

Biographical papers include obituaries, memoirs and papers relating to memorials including a service in the Chapel of Robinson College Cambridge, 10 Feb 2002; autobiographical papers including copy of Fröhlich's entry for Personal Records of Fellows of the Royal Society; papers relating to Fröhlich's career, honours and awards including his Ph.D. thesis 'On some topics in the theory of representation of groups and in class field theory', and correspondence and papers relating to his university appointments and some of his principal honours, including election to the Fellowship of the Royal Society.

Research papers chiefly comprise mathematical workings, notes and drafts: notably relating to work on the decomposition of primes [1950] and work on Galois module theory and Gauss sums.

Publications comprise published material by Fröhlich, 1950-2000, drafts and unpublished drafts, including work with Charles Terence Clegg Wall on Brauer groups, 'Galois modules and the functional equation', and draft of a longer text entitled 'mathematical theory of ostensive and consequently of empirical predicates'.

Visits, conferences and lectures include papers relating to Fröhlich's conference attendance and overseas visits 1956-1998, documentation of his participation in mathematics meetings held at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut, Oberwolfach, Germany and papers relating to Visiting Professorships, including invitations, programmes, and texts or abstracts of lectures.

The archive includes the papers, correspondence, diaries and manuscripts, recordings, research material and publications of Professor Eric Mottram and spans the period 1928-1995. Covering his own creative work and academic publications, it also reflects his wide-ranging cultural investigations in the field of twentieth century American and English literature, film, music, art, theatre and popular and material culture. A major series of files about named authors and poets covers figures as diverse as Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, Allen Ginsberg, Michael McClure, Charles Olson, Ezra Pound, Jerome Rothenberg, Muriel Rukeyser, William Burroughs, Basil Bunting, Bob Cobbing, Roy Fisher, Bill Griffiths and Tom Raworth. Also of particular importance are a series of original tape recordings, mainly made by Mottram, of poets reading their work. Linked to this material is a rich series of little press publications and little magazines. The two chief aspects of Mottram's own work are reflected in his artist notebooks and essays. The former run from 1979-1988 and contain draft poems, notes on a whole range of research topics, with inserts of postcards, press-cuttings, photographs, cartoons, artworks and postage stamps to create a rich wallet of collage effects. The essay series, including published and unpublished material and supporting notes, reflects his wide-ranging contribution over nearly half a century to the teaching of American and English literature.
