Ferguson: op. cit., Vol. I, pp. 206, 207]. On p. 349 bis of Vol. II is a magical Hebrew 'Oratio angelica' written in Latin characters, there are other Latin charms, and one in French on p. 349. The compiler's initials are found on p. 178 of Vol. II in the form 'C.T.M.D.', and again on p. 279 of the same volume as 'C.T.d.m.'. There are several dates found in the second volume, the latest is 1683 on p. 26 and again on p. 27.

This is not a large collection, with nothing except offprints representing Sir Charles's career before the mid 1950s and only five files of rather miscellaneous interest covering the years 1954-1977. Apparently at the request of Sir Charles all his case notes were destroyed at his death.

The collection of offprints is not complete; however, it seems probable that at least some of the missing items were among the papers printed in Studies in Neurology (London 1970).

The collection also contains records of related Swiss charity organisations.

Records, 1869-1967, of John Swire & Sons Ltd, comprising the bulk of known surviving material stored in the London Office, covering the development of the firm from about 1870 to 1947, and including series of correspondence coming in and out of the London Office; legal material including original deeds and leases; accounts; organisation papers; and photographs. The importance of the collection lies in the comprehensiveness of the nineteenth and twentieth century correspondence in illustrating the development of the firm and its subsidiaries from the London side where policies were decided, and from the Eastern side where they were implemented. It also gives a good picture of leading figures and firms involved in the Far Eastern trade at that time such as Jardine, Matheson & Company, the China Merchants Company and Holt's, and reveals aspects of Chinese trade and British business philosophy at the end of the Victorian era.

Papers of Algernon Charles Swinburne, [1869], comprise To "Sorella Cara" [?one of Swinburne's sisters]. '... my attempt at a translation of the great words "ai Giovanni" is as nearly complete as you expected it to be by this time if I did undertake it.' 'Have you seen the truly chivalrous and bortherly defence of Byron by Martin Tupper? Read and rejoice. There is a communion of spirits between the great, in life or death.' The remainder of the letter comprises 'genealogical information'.

A holograph manuscript, 1890, of an article entitled Robert Davenport, written by Algernon Charles Swinburne.

Manuscript volume containing a paper entitled 'A state of the trade to Sweden before and since the Prohibition', presented to the House of Commons as a petition for the relaxation of restrictions on trade with Sweden, 1717-1718.

Constitutions, manifestos, reports, pamphlets, leaflets and membership cards, 1961-1973, issued by the Democratic Party of Swaziland, the Imbokodvo National Movement, the Ngwane National Liberatory Congress and the Swaziland Progressive Party. The materials here deal with the constitutional processes leading to independence as well as the brief period of electoral politics before the constitution was abolished in 1973.

The magazine contains: stories in chapters continued with each new issue including 'Sir John Willows of Hawthornbush', histories including 'Old London, what is was and what remains of it' by Mr Warrington), descriptions of trips made to places outside London, notes on foreign produce and trades including watchmaking, advice on aspects of life such 'the duties of ladies' during Leap Year, 'Q.E.D.' [quod erat demonstrandum] questions and answers, poetry, chess club results, humorous fictitious advertisements and literary notices.

Sales particulars for the Lease and Goodwill of the Swan Inn, Tottenham, including a description of the premises, June 1890. In this context, 'goodwill' means 'permission to enjoy the use of a leased building'.

Farm diary and account book for Swakeleys Farm, Ickenham, Hillingdon, 1842-1884, with references to Herres [or Hercies] Farm, Hillingdon.

Records of the Swakeley's Estate, Ickenham, comprising title deeds and other legal documents relating to the ownership of property, such as feoffments, quitclaims, conveyances, bargain and sales, bonds, surrender and admission to copyhold, court rolls, and mortgages.

Records comprise mainly partnership, family and trust deeds. The inventory (1815) is particularly detailed account of the firm's distillery. Note: various spellings of Minnitt surname are given in the documents and in this catalogue.

Fifty two oral history recordings compiled as part of the project, 'Tales of Three Generations of Bengalis in Britain', by the Swadhinata Trust (Nirmul Committee) and CRONEM (Centre for Research on Nationalism, Ethnicity & Multiculturalism, University of Surrey) covering three areas of interest:
'roots and memory' (dialogue between first and third generation on the history of Bangladesh and the 1971 war of independence)
'community creativity' (dialogue between second and third generation on welfare and community involvement in the UK, from the 1970s-80s)
'popular culture: between tradition and innovation' (across three generations, mainly focussing on traditional and more recent British Bengali musical heritage, from the 1970s-80s).

Records of Sutton's Hospital in Charterhouse. Covering dates for the bulk of the collection are 1611-1993, although Thomas Sutton's personal papers date from the late 16th century and some of the property deeds are from the 13th century onwards.

The collection is divided into sections, which include the following:

Governors' Papers (ACC/1876//G). This section includes microfilm copies of the Assembly Order Books (minutes of governors' meetings), 1613 to 1982. The original volumes are retained at Charterhouse.

The Founder's Papers (ACC/1876//F) consist of personal documents of Thomas Sutton, and administration papers of his executors. Among the former are two bonds from Robert Catesby, one of the conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot (ref: ACC/1876/F2/3).

Pensioners' and Scholars' Records (ACC/1876/PS) include admission registers and nominations of individuals. The register covering admission of the first scholars and pensioners is kept at Charterhouse, but a microfilm copy is available at the Greater London Record Office (see ACC/1876/PS1/5).

Personal papers of two prominent pensioners are also included in this section. Horatio Honniwill Hammick was a wine grower on the Duke of Wellington's Spanish estates, and was responsible for introducing Montilla wine to the United Kingdom. His papers (refs: ACC/1876/PS5/1-20) include some information on the wine industry. Henry Novra was a fine art lecturer and drawing teacher, who died at Charterhouse in 1917. His papers (refs: ACC/1876/PS5/21-40) contain mostly financial and testamentary documents.

Estate and Manorial Records (ACC/1876/E and ACC/1876/MR) Records of the Hospital's land holdings were originally, as now, divided into these two sections. Over time, however, the distinctions between the two have become blurred, and there is now some overlap between the sections.

Deeds (ACC/1876/D) Most of the property deeds in this section have been catalogued in their original bundles, not individually. Detailed index cards for individual deeds were compiled by the Charterhouse archivist, and these can be ordered from the strongroom (refs: ACC/1876/D/IN/1-3). Please do not order deeds straight from these cards, as they do not mention when items are unfit.

The Miscellaneous section (ACC/1876/M) includes a copy of the Charterhouse school register of old boys 1892-1910 (ref: ACC/1876/M5/2), and also some information on marriages and burials in the Charterhouse Chapel (refs: ACC/1876/M4/1-5).
