The correspondence, papers and diaries of Sir Charles Blagden. Blagden's papers are interesting on several levels, generally for his close contact with European men of learning, and his relationship with Sir Joseph Banks. Blagden's professional researches are represented by medical notes in the boxed sequence. These are grouped with papers on other subject interests, including linguistics, e.g. a draft Tahitian-English dictionary, compiled from conversations with Omai, whom Blagden inoculated after Omai's voyage to England with James Cook. Blagden's interest in antiquities and travel is documented by diary entries, as is his intercourse with fellow scientists, particularly those associated with the founding of the Royal Institution.

Papers of Hugh Christopher Longuet-Higgins FRS (1923-2004), always known as Christopher, include correspondence, lecture notes and papers giving testimony to a long and varied career of over 50 years.

Some correspondence, papers, notebooks and publications of Sir James Hopwood Jeans. Early manuscripts in the series relate to Jean's education at Trinity College, Cambridge, in the form of early lecture notebooks, largely on mathematical topics. A collection of letters, 1901-1907, documents his treatment for tuberculosis at Ringwood Sanatorium, where he completed work on the theory of gases; correspondents included G H Hardy and Adam Sedgewick among others. Jean's engagements in popularizing science are represented by proofs and typescript of lectures and essays, especially those written for the BBC, 1934-1935, together with associated letters and press cuttings. The series contains collections of offprints, reprints, and extracts of published works by Jeans and others, notably from the Philosophical Transactions and the Philosophical Magazine.

Files of papers and correspondence relating to the Royal Society's administration of its internal affairs. Currently, the bulk of this material falls within the period 1925-50, although the period covered varies considerably according to subject. At present, the collection forms an important source on the Society's activities during the Second World War, and includes files of the Central Register (Section for Scientific Reseearch) for 1939-1940. This collection comprises slides used by Ivor Pfuell in his lectures on the history and development of London. The slides were collected during the 1970s and 1980s, although they depict London locations and landmarks through the ages.

Malcolm Flemyng's Course of Physiology. Neatly written in Latin by the same hand throughout, but there is no indication of the writer's identity. Vol. i fol. 1, has the title "Physiologia , auctore M. Fleming M.D. celeberrimo."

Notes from lectures of Nicolaus Cirillus, 1699-1735.

The material focuses chiefly upon bibliography, comprising notes on writings about gymnastics and manipulative treatment, and Cyriax's collations of authors cited in various works on the subject. In addition to this there are some writings upon manipulative treatment itself and related issues (MSS.2001, 2006-2007), a syllabus of lectures to be delivered by Cyriax at the Central Institute for Swedish Gymnastics (MS.6054), writings on massage by authors other than Cyriax (MSS.6056-6059) and an acknowledgement by the Museum of Practical Geology for specimens presented by another member of the Cyriax family (MS.6060).

Notes and extracts on vegetable materia medica, botany, etc. (with the exception of MS.2882, which deals with British insects, and MS.7961 which consists of general correspondence). The plants discussed include species from Africa, Asia and the Americas. Many of the pieces are drafts of lectures (to bodies such as the Royal Botanic Society) or of papers later published in journals such as the Pharmaceutical Journal, Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association, etc. Some items include inserted correspondence.

Traité des fièvres. The general title, and that on the spine is 'Leçons de Médecine'. The work is probably incomplete, as at the end of the second volume is 'Fin du tome second': it appears to be a student's notes of lectures, probably given at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris. On page 416 of volume one, the date 1814 occurs, which is stated to be 'l'année dernière'. Produced in Paris.

Notes of lectures of Jacques Lazerme, physician, 1729-c 1755.

Dictata in Materiam Medicam. These MSS. are probably scribal copies of lectures written for the use of students. Produced in Leyden, mid-18th century.

Notes of lectures on dental surgery, dental radiology, and oral surgery, Aberystwyth, c 1940. It contains notes on 'Inflammation', 'Dental Surgery', 'Radiology' (mostly oral and dental), 'Oral Surgery', and 'Dental Surgery Coaching Class'. There are a number of illustrative sketches among the notes.

Disputatio tertia therapeutica, sive de medendis morbis. Disputatio quarta pyretologica, sive de febribus. Disputatio quinta et ultima pathologica, in qua agitur de curandis affectibus praeter naturam. The first few leaves of Vol. II have a marginal running title 'Onofrii Ricci Practica'. This volume is dated 1650 at the end. These are notes of Lectures in a Course on the general Practice of Medicine. As in that MS. there is the inscription: 'Ex Rev. D. Indico Mancini' written on the verso of the last leaf of each volume. On the verso of the last leaf of Vol. I: 'Indicus Antonius Mancinus Anno MDCLXXXiii': and on the second fly-leaf of Vol. II 'Del Ph[ilippo?] Fidelis Manzi'. Produced in Naples.

Manuscripts from the collection of the British Medical Association, formerly held in the BMA Library, Tavistock Square, London. The manuscripts were numbered and catalogued at the BMA, with two exceptions among these papers - however the numbering of surviving documents is not consecutive, so that the original collection must have contained at least 26 catalogued items and an unknown number of unrecorded acquisitions. Former BMA MSS.1-6 (transferred at the same time as the manuscripts described here) are now GC/140; one fugitive BMA manuscript was purchased separately and is now MS. 6881. The location of the remainder is not known. The contents mainly comprise transcripts of medical lectures and case notes.

Cours de Chirurgie de Mr Lisfranc...', transcribed by A. Léonardon, Paris. An incomplete transcript of Lisfranc's course of surgical lectures, probably delivered at his house at 149 Rue St. Martin, Paris, from 1 May 1822. The first volume of the original set, comprising the earliest lectures, is wanting, although a note on f. 1r. of MS. 7063 indicates that the course began on 12 Nov. 1821.

Surgical lecture and other notes taken by [H.M. Stumbles as a student at Edinburgh University] With numerous coloured sketches. The author is not named, but identification was provided by the donor. The first part of MS. 7881 (ff. 1-80) contains a fair-copy transcript of 21 surgical lectures, no doubt delivered at the Edinburgh Medical School where Stumbles was a student (MB, ChB 1902); this is followed by fair-copy notes on various diseases and conditions pertaining to surgery, including diseases of bones (ff. 81-83), fractures and dislocations (84-242, and in MS. 7882, ff. 1-12), diseases of the blood vessels (13-40), the lymphatic system (41-43), tumours (44-68), the osseous and articular system (69-139), diseases of muscle (141-168), venereal diseases (168-205), injuries and diseases of the nerves (206-239), and middle ear diseases (239-243). The source of the notes is not generally given, though `Harold Stiles MB' [Harold Jalland Stiles, assistant in Surgery, University of Edinburgh, 1889-1900] evidently delivered lecture IX (on anaesthetics), MS. 7881, f. 29, and his name is found again on f. 224 of MS. 7882. The implication is that this was a departure from the norm, and the bulk of the lectures, if not the other notes, presumably derive from John Chiene (1843-1923), Professor of Surgery at Edinburgh. Two cuttings from the British Medical Journal, 26 Nov. 1898 and 9 Jan. 1899, are bound into MS. 7882, ff. 85-86 and 138.

Research: Although not extensive, provides documentation of a number of Wilson's principal interests including the Salmonella group of bacteria and milk hygiene. There are three laboratory notebooks with experimental data covering the period 1919-45. Section C. Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS): Relates chiefly to the unpublished history written by Wilson after his retirement as Director of the PHLS. There is also a little material relating to laboratory design and equipment and PHLS personnel. Section D. Lectures and publications: The most substantial in the collection. There are records of Wilson's lectures for a period of forty years from 1944, extensive documentation of the later editions of Principles of bacteriology and immunity, and editorial correspondence and papers for the British Journal of Experimental Pathology and the Journal of Hygiene. Section E. Societies and organisations: Documentation of Wilson's association with ten British organisations including the Medical Research Club, Medical Research Council and Veterinary Club. The Medical Research Council material relates to the Working Party on Tristan da Cunha which was set up to supervise medical investigations when the inhabitants were evacuated to Britain after the island's volcano erupted in 1961. There is also material relating to the Research Foundation, Chicago, which specialised in tuberculosis research, on whose medical advisory committee Wilson served. Section F. Visits and conferences: Records of a number of overseas trips in an advisory capacity for the World Health Organisation, including to Ethiopia 1964, Iraq 1965, Iran, Sudan and Egypt 1971 and the Philippines 1972, and records of international microbiology congresses. Section G. Correspondence: Although not extensive, includes a chronological sequence of scientific correspondence, 1930-1987, Wilson's collection of autograph letters addressed to Topley and himself, and references and recommendations. Section H. Photographs: Photographic records of Wilson, colleagues, conferences and PHLS laboratories. Section J. 'Biographical History of Bacteriology': Manuscript of Wilson's history, with correspondence about publication.
