Correspondence and papers of Dr Moses Gaster, his family, and the family of his wife Lucy (née Friedlander), 1796-1973, dating largely from the 1870s to the 1930s, also including some material on Gaster's life and work which post-dates his death. Many papers relate to Gaster's activities in his official posts, notably as Haham, to his interests in Jewish affairs and Zionism, and as a scholar, but the collection touches upon a wide range of topics in late 19th and early 20th century history, including the history of Rumanian Jewry and Anglo-Jewry. The bulk of the collection comprises Gaster's correspondence, which includes letters from Jewish and Zionist organisations in Britain, Europe and Jerusalem, from newpapers, periodicals and publishers, and from a large number of individuals outside Gaster's family, including eminent British, European and American Jewish scholars, rabbis and public figures, such as members of the Adler, Gollancz, Mocatta, Montefiore and Rothschild families, and with non-Jewish public figures, but it also includes a wide range of other material. The main series mostly cover much or all of Gaster's adult life. Some material of the same type or on the same subject is separated between different sections of this large collection.

Correspondence series include letters from organisations and individuals outside Gaster's family, one sequence sorted alphabetically by correspondent; one sequence sorted chronologically, 1874-1939, with a few other items, the earliest dating from 1854; a sequence of undated letters, sorted alphabetically; letters received by Gaster on the emigration of Rumanian Jewry, including to England, 1900; Gaster's out-letters and copies of letters written by him, 1887-1939; copies of letters from Gaster to the Zionist Chaim Weizmann dating from the 1900s and 1910s; letters not written by or addressed to Gaster, 1870-1939 and undated.

A series of bound volumes contains press cuttings and other items, largely printed, including circulars and pamphlets, with some letters received and written by Gaster, and relates to various subjects, although much of the material was apparently bound haphazardly; the contents, overall dating largely from 1879-1939 but with items of 1796, 1838-1849, and 1867, include persecution of Jews in Rumania and elsewhere; emigration; Anglo-Jewish matters and the Anglo-Jewish Association; hospitals and schools; lectures, weddings, and other functions; the Board of Deputies of British Jews; Shechita; the Slaughter Bill, 1911; the Spanish-Portuguese congregation, including Bevis Marks Synagogue and Gaster's 25th anniversary as Haham, 1912; Independent Order of B'nai B'rith; letters congratulating Gaster on his engagement, marriage and birth of his children, and on the 'Gaster Anniversary Volume' ; Zionism, including the Jewish Colonial Trust, and Zionist Congresses in 1905, 1907 and 1913; Palestine; the Royal Asiatic Society; the Folklore Society.

Printed ephemera, dating from the 1870s to the 1930s, includes invitations to lectures, weddings and other events; visiting and greeting cards and condolences.

Papers, 1890-1896, on the Ramsgate affair relate to Gaster's association with the College there, the controversy over his management, and events leading up to his departure in 1896.

Papers relating to Zionism include copies of letters between Gaster and Theodor Herzl at the turn of the 20th century and other Zionist correspondence and papers up to the Balfour Declaration of 1917; file of letters and telegrams, some copies, from Winston (Leonard Spencer) Churchill, 1906-1908; volume of minutes of Council meetings of the London Zionist League, 1904-1910; microfilms of Zionist sources, among them Herzl letters held elsewhere.

Pamphlets, 1944-1950, relate to the Anglo-Jewish Association, a London conference of Jewish organisations, Palestine, the Jews in Britain, and Jewish Relief Units in Germany.

Working papers include notebooks, many undated, relating to Gaster's studies (from the 1870s) and later research; typescript and some manuscript reviews, sermons, letters to the press, obituary articles or notices, speeches and articles by Gaster; loose press cuttings of Gaster's reviews and articles, and cuttings on Gaster himself and his areas of interest; reproductions of texts and manuscripts and working notes by Gaster on his scholarly research.

Family papers include a genealogical roll of the Gaster family; two photograph albums, largely undated but apparently dating from the latter 19th century, many items unlabelled but some taken in Bucharest, Breslau and London and some identified as members of the Friedlander and Gaster families; correspondence, comprising letters from Gaster's family in Rumania, 1873-1939 and undated; Gaster's original letters to his family in Rumania, from 1874; letters from Gaster to his wife and children, 1885-1939 and undated, and a diary of Gaster on a journey to Palestine, 1907; letters to Moses Gaster from his wife Lucy, between Moses and Lucy and their children, and from the Friedlander family to Moses and Lucy Gaster, 1888-1939; letters from Lucy to her parents, Michael and Bertha Friedlander, before and after her marriage, 1880-1922; Friedlander family correspondence including letters from Michael Friedlander to his wife Bertha, from 1866, and to the Friedlanders from the Gasters; other letters received by the Friedlanders from their family and others, largely 1870-1927 and undated. Papers, 1831-1853, of Grace Aguilar. The first part of the collection consists of her manuscript notebooks. The second part is manuscript material in other hands, consisting of a book of tributes to Aguilar, a description of her last illness, and an account for the administration of her estate. The collection also contains copies of several of her printed works.

Jews in Hungary collection, notably comprises Was sollen wir den Antisemiten antworten?, statistical information regarding the population of Jews in Hungary between 1920 and 1930 extracted from official Hungarian government statistics and a transcription from an antisemitic Hungarian Nationalist Party notice.

Papers of Edgar Duchin, 1930s-1940s, comprise circulars, reports, minutes and memoranda of the Refugee Joint Consultative Committee, Central Refugee Committee and the Central Office of Refugees concerning tribunals, employment, allowances, welfare and communication with Germany; agenda, minutes and reports of the National Council of Civil Liberties with respect to refugee matters; papers of the Haldane Society including Duchin's draft report of the Sub-Committee on the Law Relating to Aliens; information sheets and other papers of the organisation Democratic Aid, concerned with the rights of interned aliens, specifically immigrants from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia who were politically active in Left Wing politics and were subsequently interned in Great Britain, includes transcripts of interviews with Otto Beuer, Karl Kreibich, Ludwig Freund and Anton Rudal; correspondence regarding individual cases in which Duchin was involved as a solicitor; minutes of meetings, Parliamentary Debates and correspondence regarding distribution of Nazi assets and a collection of miscellaneous papers including minutes of various committees including the Friendly Aliens Protection Committee and reports of various organisations on various matters including Council for German Jewry, 1938.

The personal papers of Vicky Abrams, 1900-1989, notably comprise her personal papers and correspondence, 1031/1/1-206; personal papers and correspondence of other family members, 1031/2/1-108 and material regarding Neu Beginnen, 1031/3/1-12.

Vicky Abrams's personal collection comprises the bulk of the total papers and notably contains a Vienna University report book, 1925 (1031/1/1); references from Abrams employer Das Magazin, 1933 (1031/1/2-3); Gestapo protective custody order, 8 August 1938 (1031/1/7); release permit from KZ Lichtenburg, Pretin, Saxony,13 March 1939 (1031/1/8). The collection also includes photographs including portraits of Abrams taken in KZ Lichtenburg (1031/1/15); correspondence from Abrams to her family in Vienna, written from prison [mostly KZ Lichtenburg]; correspondence between Vicky Abrams and the following former comrades and authors of articles about Neu Beginnen: Georg Müller, Helga Lichtenecker, Henry Hellmann, Ernst Lowe, Rainer Sandvoss, Otto Sperling and Richard Loewenthal (Rix). The collection also comprises writings of Vicky Abrams including poetry written in Jauer prison camp, Saxony, 1937-1938 (1031/1/202); draft accounts of life for women in Nazi prison camps, (1031/1/205).

The second section of this collection contains papers and correspondence of Abrams family members (1031/2/1-108) most notably from Hans Julius to the family ; the third section, concerning Neu Beginnen, notably contains copy documentation and articles about Neu Beginnen including a copy indictment against members of the organisation, dated 27 August 1936; articles about Neu Beginnen (1031/3/2 and 1031/3/4) and obituaries of Walter and Ernst Lowe (Löwenheim) (1031/3/6-9).

Papers of Jewish refugees in Great Britain, 1939-1944, comprise reports regarding the plight of refugees in Great Britain during World War Two, notably including circulars from the Central Refugee Committee on the enlistment of tradesmen into the army and the RAF and the establishment of a women's foreign legion and a report entitled 'Facts concerning attempted disaffection among Jewish and orthodox in the Polish army in Great Britain'.

Report of transport of Jews from Düsseldorf to Minsk, 1941, comprises a certified copy of a report about the transport of Jews from Düsseldorf to Minsk, including Jews from Essen and Wuppertal, by Hauptmann der Schutzpolizei, Meurin. The report has the following sub-headings: description of the transport; description of the city and ghetto of Minsk; Russian POWs; return (to Düsseldorf) of the Transportkommando and recommendations.

A letter from Reichsführer SS, Himmler, to Chef der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD, 1942, regarding the removal of patients from the Jewish hospital in Munich to Terezin, as the premises were required for a school for nurses and midwives from Lebensborn.

Papers giving directions on the disposal of Jewish property prior to evacuation to Litzmannstadt, c 1941, comprise a recent copy of a document entitled 'guidelines for the handling of the property of Jews sent to Litzmannstadt', containing specific instructions on how the property of Jews must be handled, quoting the authority of several laws and ordinances.

Papers concerning the persecution of Jews in Berlin, 1935-1945, notably include copies of an arrest warrant for Leo Boschwitz, 1935, for the destruction of a copy Der Stürme and his release from Lichtenburg concentration camp in the same year; a good conduct certificate issued by Camp le Vernet for Kurt Nohe, 1940; detailed instructions issued by the jüdische Kultusvereinigung zu Berlin to Regina Montilja prior to her deportation to 'the Protectorate', 1942; pro forma summons to the assembly station at Grosse Hamburger Strasse, Berlin, 1943, and at Schulstrasse 78, Berlin, 1944.

Papers of Julian Lehmann, chiefly comprising press cuttings from German language newspapers 1916-1930s on topics including the life and work of contemporary Jewish personalities such as Freud, Einstein and Stefan Zweig and articles of a general Jewish interest. In addition there are a number of draft typescript articles and notes, either clearly authored by Julian Lehmann or written on headed note paper with his name, on subjects ranging from obituary notices to the experiences of German Jewish immigrants to Great Britain during the Nazi era.

Report by August Grüber on conditions in Dachau concentration camp, 1936, giving a classification of prisoners in the camp also including mention of cabaret evenings replete with reference to jokes about conditions.

Papers of the Inow family, 1938-1939, consist of correspondence between Renate Inow, in England, her sister, Margalit in Sweden and Palestine and their parents in Wuppertal, Germany. The collection comprises 2 parts: an unbound volume of translations and partial translations of letters addressed to Margalit mostly whilst she was in Sweden entitled 'Voices from the Past'. The collection includes reproductions of photographs of the parents and a family tree.

Papers of Traunstein Displaced Persons Camp, 1997, comprise copies of press cuttings regarding Traunstein Displaced Persons Camp with covering letter.

Papers of 'The Hidden Jews of Berlin', 1999, comprise interview transcripts with German Jews. The televison programme included detailed accounts of life in hiding in Berlin during World War Two; experience of capture, interrogation by Jewish collaborators and Gestapo and betrayal by Jews; Mischlinge; Fabrikation; Siemens; Rosenstrasse protest; Grosse Hamburger Strasse; life in Berlin before the war.

Papers of Walter Gordon and Max Nelki, 1933-1952 comprising personal and official correspondence and papers of Walter Gordon and other material relating to his status as a Jewish doctor, including a questionnaire with a note relating to ethnicity, [1936]; correspondence with former commanding officers relating to his military service in World War One; instructions from the Reichsärztekammer regarding his professional remit and printed list of non-aryan and 'staatsfeindlich' doctors and dentists, published by the Krankenkasse der deutschen Angestellten, arranged alphabetically by city/ region, 1934. This microfilm collection of correspondence documents the experiences of Julius Bloch and family and friends, some of whom managed to escape Nazi occupied Europe, and others, who did not. The papers include correspondence from his brother in Gurs concentration camp in the French Pyrénees, where he died.

This collection deals with a law suit brought by the Osram company, against a former employee, Ernst Schaefer, before the Reichsverwaltungsgericht, Berlin, 1941. The gist of the ruling is that in light of a new law affecting Jewish World War One veterans (29 December 1938) the firm was justified in terminating a previous agreement in which Schaefer was to receive a pension and other benefits.
