The collection contains minutes of the NUTC and the LUTC from their foundation to the 1950's. Files date from the 1940's to 1984. It also contains a minute book of the Sunday Closing Special Campaign Committee (SCSCC) which transferred its work to the NUTC in 1903 (this Committee may have been appointed by the NUTC). The secretary of the NUTC (and LUTC) also served as one of the two general secretaries on the SCSCC. A minute book of the Free Churches Pledge Signing Campaign Committee (FCPSCC) appears in the collection. This committee was dissolved in 1911. Representatives of the NUTC and LUTC attended meetings which were held in Memorial Hall, Farringdon Street, and in 1911 the secretary of the NUTC and LUTC was also secretary of the FCPSCC.

A minute book of the Society of Cogers appears in the collection probably because an NUTC member, H. Weightman (later NUTC secretary and treasurer), was acting secretary of the society c.1919.

The recording of financial income and expenditure into ledgers was not always done. A number of blank ledgers deposited suggest the aim of entering such information, but it was never achieved. An almost complete set of audited, annual summary accounts from 1911 to 1975 provide the bulk of information on finance.

Records of the Independent Gas Light and Coke Company, 1827-1875, comprising minutes of Directors and Shareholders meetings with some enclosures including letters, notices, circulars, and prospectuses.

Records of Stephen Green Limited, patent medicine manufacturer, 1780-1930. The records relate to proprietorship of the recipe for "Doctor Johnson's Golden Ointment" including legal documents and legal case papers; and records relating to the manufacture and sale of the ointment including financial accounts, order books, correspondence, sales summaries, testimonials, advertising, legislation involving patent medicines and history of the ointment. Also various family and estate records.

Records of the South Metropolitan Gas Light and Coke Company, 1834-1965. The records include the deed of settlement, minutes of the proprietors' and directors' meetings, reports of general meetings, acts and orders in council and items relating to the South Metropolitan Pension Fund Securities Limited.

Records of the Cornhill Ward, Corporation of London. The records comprise wardmote minutes and accounts, returns and inhabitants lists, jury lists and other administrative papers. They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff at various dates.

Records of the Middlesex Central Coroner's District comprising depositions, 1862-1874. A deposition is the testimony or statements given in a court of law by witnesses. It can be taken down in writing to be read out in court if the witness cannot appear.

Records of Bovril Limited, 1797-1959, comprising leases, mortgages, conveyances and other legal documents relating to the ownership of premises on Old Street, Bunhill Row and Banner Street, Finsbury, Islington and Farringdon Street, City of London.

Papers relating to the estates of the 4th Marquess of Salisbury comprising documents relating to property transfer, such as conveyances, mortgages, valuations, leases and abstracts of title. The properties mentioned are primarily in the St James's Park area, Westminster.

Records relating to the Calthorpe family estates, including mortgages, conveyances, insurance policies, tax redemption certificates, and letters. The estate included premises in Grays Inn Road, City Road, Gough Square, Chelsea, Fleet Street and in Norfolk.

This collection comprises records of the William Cotton Estate (later the Bow Common Estate) and documents the acquisition and running of the Cotton estate from [1714]- 1936.. The records include marriage settlements, trustee appointments, wills and probates, legal case papers, administrative papers for the Limehouse estate, papers relating to property transactions, registers of properties, plans and maps, catalogue of wines for auction and register of leases. Some of the material concerns the Bow Common Estate Company Ltd.

The remaining documents do not appear to be connected with the main group. However, since the series of deeds for the property in St James Westminster, at least, are clearly incomplete, it may be that the two groups are related, though the link is not now apparent.

The covering dates of the court books are the dates of the actual courts, or proceedings before the steward, as distinct from enrolments of transactions out of court. The original numbers of the volumes are given in inverted commas in the description column and will be needed if use is made of the original indexes. Since the manors of Lordshold, Hackney and of Stepney were held in conjunction until 1652, a few records relating to Stepney are included in this collection, for example M79/LH/128/4. Similarly court books for Lordshold, 1654-1659, 1661-1664 and extracts of Court Baron rolls, 1652-1717, can be found in the list of Stepney manor records (Refs. M93/1-2, 4, 89-92) as well as some deeds (e.g. W93/439-441).

Many of these records were damaged by flooding due to enemy action in the second World War and cannot be consulted in their present state. However where the court books are unfit for consultation, draft court books and papers entered into the court books can be used as an alternative.
