Records of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, later known as the Chartered Bank. Records date from 1851, just prior to the foundation of the bank in 1853 and include reference to the operation and management of the business covering both branches, agencies and head office. There is information relating to premises and staff, inspection of branches and customer accounts, some records of legal actions as well as general administrative records created and maintained by the secretaries and general managers.

Highlights include records relating to the bank during times of War, from accounts of local rebellions and riots through to the Second World War which saw two thirds of the banks' branches occupied by the Japanese and over 100 of the banks' European officers interned. There is a series of letters within the records of the Secretary and a number of personal reminiscences recounting the courageous actions of trustworthy staff members trying to salvage bank records from being seized by the Japanese, from those in internment camps and accounts of conditions in occupied countries (CLC/B/207/CH03/01/07) and a register of employees interned in prisoner of war camps or killed during enemy action (CLC/B/207/CH08/01/004).

There is a series of posterity files (CLC/B/207/CH03/01/09-13) consisting of over 1,300 documents which were retained by the Secretary as a research resource and for historical interest covering a remarkable range of subjects such as legal wrangles and reports on trading conditions in particular countries reflecting how the bank was responsive to early economic development and new trade when seeking to expand its network of branches.

The 'Realms of Silver' centenary publication research files are a valuable source on the history of the bank (CLC/B/207/CH03/01/14-17) covering a range of topics such as key commodities in particular areas, they show staff enduring disease, plague, famine and drought, rebellion and revolution, earthquakes, floods and fire and highlight how the activities of the Bank have touched upon events of world history as well as of local development, often reflecting creative solutions that the bank employed to overcome such problems and tribulations.

There is an extensive collection of premises records (CLC/B/207/CH09) including plans of the branches and often subsequent upgrades and developments of branches and agencies in response to growing business needs. There are also photographs which show not only bank premises but also create a pictorial history reflecting the international operations of the Chartered Bank as well as showing local flora, fauna and methods of trade, for example, in Cebu the use of Buffalo to move Hemp and in Burma the use of Elephants in the emerging logging trade. They also reflect local tragedies such as the effects of the Yokohama Earthquake in Japan in 1923 (CLC/B/207/CH09/08; CLC/B/207/CH08/04; CLC/B/207/CH03/01/16)

There is an extensive series of records relating to accounts and financial matters (CLC/B/207/CH04), including general ledgers; a comprehensive series of half yearly balance sheets from branches and records of the Taxation and Statistics Department (which appears to have fallen under the auspices of the Chief Accountant.

There are also records relating to staff (CLC/B/207/CH08), which give details on the bank's application and registration process, and progress and activities of named staff when they took up their posts. These records include registers of staff (1874 - 1920), some staff applications and employment agreements (1900 - 1930) and an extensive series of half-yearly schedules of staff in overseas branches (1863 - 1960).

Records in this sub-fonds include those generated by the Secretary's Department, General Manager's Department, Inspection Department, Overseas Personnel Department and the Birmingham Representative.

They include a series of files on Japanese occupation of the eastern branches during World War Two (CLC/B/207/CH03/01/07), personal accounts from employees who were interned by the Japanese and the war damage claims brought by the bank in the Philippines (CLC/B/207/CH03/02/05) and against the Yokohama Specie Bank in Singapore (CLC/B/207/CH03/02/04) subsequent to the end of the war.

There are a series of research files for the official centenary publication of 1953, 'Realms of Silver' which contain a wealth of historical information regarding the bank (CLC/B/207/CH03/01/14-17), including personnel accounts from former staff members of their service with the bank and a series of posterity files (CLC/B/207/CH03/01/09-13) containing information on a wide range of the banks work and operations. These are complemented by two series of country files (CLC/B/207/CH03/01/06 and CLC/B/207/CH03/02/02).

In addition there are records of the Inspection department (CLC/B/207/CH03/03) which include details of some cases where bad debts to the bank led to the liquidation of customers' assets, reports following the inspection of branches and a file relating to a case of fraud perpetrated by a staff member.

There are also records of a court case brought by Gerald Gelberg regarding some Sarawak postage stamps (CLC/B/207/CH03/02/06) and the records of the Chartered Banks' first and only venture to Birmingham (CLC/B/207/CH03/05).

Records of Eastern Bank Limited. The archives are those of the London Head Office, and most of the correspondence is in the name of the General Manager. The collection includes corporate records; minutes; General Manager's papers; accounts; correspondence with branches; inspection of branches; lending (except the Mundhra loan); staff records; and premises records.

Access to the archives is subject to a 45 year rule, with a 70 year rule for records containing personally sensitive information. In addition, all records are held off-site, and require at least 24 hours notice for access.

The Imperial Life Insurance Company records comprise minutes, annual reports and accounts, correspondence, prospectuses, register of mortgages and claims by shareholders for shares in Alliance Assurance.

Records of the Law Union and Crown Insurance Company, comprising fire department instructions to agents.

Records of the Field Lane Foundation. The earliest records date to 1842 in its incarnation as the Sabbath School. These comprise management committee minutes which run as a continuous series to 1984 and reflect the change from Sabbath School to Ragged School in 1850.

Important series include the deeds and papers of Field Lane dating from 1801 to 1961. There are also series relating to each of the major homes and organisations associated with or run by the Field Lane Association including the Home Workers Aid Association and the 5 holiday or retirement homes: Eastwood, Dovers, The Priory, Holly Hill and Singholm. There is also a set of annual reports from 1847-1996 and a series of printing blocks used for many of the Field Lanes' publications.

Records relating to the Wild family, including mid 18th century presentments at the Manorial Court, assessments for land tax and house tax and deeds and indentures for the manors of Harmondsworth, Harlington, Hamworth, Cranford and Colham dating from 1550 to 1840.

Records of the District Surveyors Association, consisting of committee minutes dating from 1845, correspondence and subject files dating from 1907. There are also series of membership records, finance material, a large series of Parliamentary Acts and Bills and a series of court cases.

The records consist of minutes of the Council, Executive Committee, Search Committee, House and Building Committee and Annual General Meetings; correspondence; publications and printed material, reports and newsletters; and papers of Rabbi Harold Reinhart, Rabbi Albert Freidlander and Rabbi Thomas Salamon.

Guild of Memorial Craftsmen records including minutes and AGMs dating from 1949, a register of members, a short series of accounts and balance sheets and a nice series of photographs showing the work of members.

This glass plate negative shows a street in Totteridge Fields. The street is unidentified and probably dates from around 1910.

Collection of material relating to the singer and civil rights activist Paul Robeson, including a large number of recordings on tape and vinyl of Paul Robesons' wide repertoire of songs and a series of reel-to-reel tapes including interviews and radio programmes made with Robeson; and letters and photographs and a series of scrapbooks (put together by Ken Goodland) of newspaper cuttings charting the life and career of Paul Robeson.

J Lyons and Company Limited, food manufacturers and caterers, comprising application forms for and information about The Lyons Club. Dated to the 1960s. Lyons ran sports clubs for staff members and their families, providing sports facilities.

Records of the Byng family relating to their estates, including Wrotham Park and surrounding lands, Barnet; and properties in South Mimms; Potters Bar; Westminster; Berkshire and Hertfordshire. The collection includes some family papers including marriage settlements and wills.

This collection consists of working papers, publications, and ephemera relating to the International Year of the Family (1994).

Records of the London Archives Users' Forum, comprising Committee minutes (1988-2006), Chairman's papers, publicity, and newsletter (1988-2005), 'Place in the Sun' Heritage Lottery Fund papers (2002-2004), and financial accounts.

Papers of Michael Ward, member of the Greater London Council (GLC). The records are representative of the sort of organisations and issues Michael Ward dealt with in his capacity as Chair of the Industry and Employment Committee of the Greater London Council in the 1980s. The files of correspondence, minutes, funding applications and feasibility studies show that the Committee was particularly involved with issuing grants to worthy projects, supporting workers in disputes with employers, assessing the impact of new building developments in London, creating schemes, such as co-operatives, to assist people to work together and ensuring that all Londoners were fairly represented in the workplace.

Michael Ward was also Chair of the Enterprise Board Selection Panel, part of the Greater London Enterprise Board. GLEB was set up in 1982 to intervene and take initiatives to preserve and create long-term jobs for Londoners by regenerating the capital's industrial base. It aimed to discover and develop means of democratising London's economy. This collection contains its memorandum and articles of association together with correspondence, some publications and press releases.

The collection reflects some of the beliefs held by the GLC in general and not just those of the Committees Michael Ward sat on. For example, its enthusiasm for fair trade in Third World countries, the importance of equal opportunities at work and the value of the pedestrian and residential areas in cities

Records relating to Clapham Labour Party. The collection includes minutes of Clapham Labour Party's executive committee and general management committee as well as information on borough and LCC elections. The correspondence referring to Dr MacGregor Reid (President of the Clapham Labour Party in 1926, d 1946), his alleged attack on other Labour and Socialist Parties and ensuing enquiry is especially engaging. However, the records also mention the Battersea Division and contain correspondence of the London Labour Party and national Labour Party. Of particular note are the official Labour Party posters reflecting policy on topics such as farming, coal strikes and the family and its publications about issues such as refugees, Soviet wartime policy and Palestinians in Israel.

Records of the Ramblers Association. This collection consists of administrative and publicity material relating to the national and local activities of the association, including minutes, financial material, details of the routes of well-known walks, press cuttings and press releases. It also contains subject files produced by the main Ramblers Association offices on the various campaigns and sites of interest with which the association has been involved. Separate deposits were also received of material generated from the offices of the Director of the association, the Assistant Director of the Access section and the Countryside Secretary of the Southern Area.

Records of Saint George's School, Hanover Square, comprising minutes of Board of Managers meetings.

Dissertation by Charles Bornat, architecture student. It comprises a comprehensive survey of old London doorways, 1660-1810, and includes sketches and photographs by Bornat.

Photographs and sketches of the Clerkenwell area by Sylvia Turtle, showing the development of the area including images of storm damage in Charterhouse Square in 1987 and a poster produced during office developments in the 1990's showing a skull formed out of buildings and the words 'Death by Development'.

The collection also includes a letter written in 1941 to Sylvia Turtle's aunt from Simpkin Marshall Book Centre regarding their old fashioned service and their 'Dickensian Staff' and displaying War time spirit '... to show the Germans that they cannot part old friends with their bombs, and fires, and bloody murder.'

Records of J Lyons and Company Limited and Lyons Tetley Limited, food manufacturers and caterers, W H and F J Horniman and Company Limited and Joseph Tetley and Company, tea merchants, 1849-1978.

This collection contains records relating to all three companies (Horniman, Lyons and Tetley) when they were trading as separate businesses and when they were united under various incarnations of the one "Lyons" name. (They include references to other companies such as Symbol biscuits which Lyons took over in 1944)

However, despite the fact that some corporate records such as minutes have been retained by the Tetley Group Limited the majority of this collection is in fact composed of records relating to the Lyons company (which is necessarily linked with the former due to the fact it was a major competitor for years before taking it over in 1973).

Marketing and publicity aspects are the most heavily represented. As such this is a visually appealing collection and of particular note are the photograph albums and volumes of artwork, product labels and advertisments which are a testiment to the impact tea drinking has had on British society and its way of life.

Posters relating to the 'Free George Davis' campaign and campaigns by Islington Tenants against estate agents Prebble and Company.

Records of the Salmon and Gluckstein families, 1890-1963. The records relate to the administrative and financial activities of the Gluckstein and Salmon family 'resource pool'. They are not the records of the individual businesses run by the family. Records include minutes of weekly meetings, income and expenditure ledgers, a salary book, family trees and a series of reference volumes containing copies of important documents and recording decisions taken. There is also a file of accounts for the firm Maxwell and Ponting Ltd.

Records of HM Prison Wormwood Scrubs consisting of nominal registers of prisoners 1917-1967, are arranged chronologically within three groups, namely, youth registers, adult registers and Borstal training registers. Indexes have been deposited for each group. In addition a number of unidentified pages of photographs were deposited with the registers.
