Latham's papers, 1838-1871, include his casebook, 1838-39, and his lectures on fever and the pulse, in his hand, 1871.

Sibson's anatomical drawings, c.1840-c.1860, both pathological and clinical, watercolours and pen and ink sketches, many are labelled and annotated. Many were used to illustrate his Medical Anatomy, or, Illustrations of the Relevant Position and Movements of the Internal Organs (1869) and various medical papers.

Henry Leonard Wilson's papers, 1930-1968, relate to his unpublished paper on the blindness of the poet John Milton, and consist of correspondence relating to the paper, drafts of the paper, notes on Milton, articles by others on Milton, and correspondence between Ruth Wilson, Wilson's widow, and the Royal College of Physicians library about the posthumous publication of the paper.

The collection is divided into four main groups: The first group contains papers relating to William Clift's work as conservator of the Hunterian Museum. This is the largest of the four groups and contains a number of sub divisions such as explanation and display of specimens, expanding the collections, administration of the museum, and correspondence. This group also contains the transcripts made by Clift and others of the Hunterian manuscripts. The second group contains work carried out by William Clift as an illustrator for publications. The third group contains a small amount of personal material that is in the collection. The fourth group contains transcripts and copies of manuscript material by William Clift that is held in other repositories such as the Natural History Museum.

Papers of John Heaviside, c1792, comprising transcript of lecture by John Hunter on fractured patella, gunshot wounds, cancer, scrophula, locked jaw, mortification or partial death, undated; notes from poisons by John Hunter, c1790; notes on lecture by John Hunter on venereal disease;

notes on an introductory lecture to a course of 58 lectures on surgery; notes on a lecture on inflammation; notes on opium; accounts of cases and post-mortem examinations, 1792.

The collection represents the contacts through two centuries of a group of men and women of high distinction ramifying through the medical, legal and literary worlds. It forms a not unimportant fund of minor historical material, comprising more than a thousand letters from nearly five hundred writers.

The autograph letters are mounted in 10 large volumes: -

1. Letterbook of John Arbuthnot (1667-1735). The most interesting letters are those of Pope and Swift and their circle written in 1714 when the Queen's death involved the destruction of their political hopes. Letterbook of William Hunter (1719-1783). It includes letters from Tobias Smollett the novelist, from Dr. Johnson thanking Hunter for presenting his book to the King, and from Edward Gibbon 'proposing himself the pleasure of attending some of Dr. Hunter's Anatomical lectures.'

2. Hunter and Baillie family letters and reminiscences, including the letters written by John to William Hunter from active service in 1761-62; poems by Sophia Baillie, Jenner family letters.

   3. Letters to Matthew Baillie from the Royal Princesses. Letters of the Bentham family, including three from Jeremy Bentham. Autograph letter collection includes letters from Thomas Carlyle and Charles Dickens. 1735 - 1845

   The Hunter Baillie collection comprises also a number of manuscript books, the oldest of which is a commonplace book of the early eighteenth century, giving details of family history of the Hunters. Matthew Baillie's notebooks include: -

Journal of a tour in Europe in 1788 and A short memoir of my life, 1818. 'Some brief observations from my own experience upon a considerable number of diseases', in two volumes. n.d. With these are his casebooks, fee-books and other professional notes, including details of his attendance on King George III. Baillie records that his total annual fees mounted from £121 in 1792 to £9,995 in 1815.

Papers of Juan N Restrepo and Julio M Escovar, 1892-1894, comprising a manuscript volume titled Ulceracion fagedenica del abdomen; observacion clinica muy interesante recojida en el Hospital de Caridad de Honda (Republica de Colombia) containing clinical observations of a case of Phagedaena, an ulcerative condition of the skin, made at the Charity Hospital in Honda, Colombia, by Drs Restrepo and Escovar.

Papers of Phil[lip] Cornish, 1773, comprising a manuscript volume titled Lectures on Surgery, taken verbatim as Mr Else (one of the surgeons of St Thomas's and Guy's Hospitals) delivered them, by Phil. Cornish. Surgeon containing notes on surgical lectures. Including notes titled Lectures on Dislocations by Mr Frank, surgeon to Guy's Hospital.

2 manuscript volumes by unknown authors, mid 18th century, comprising a volume titled Division of Simple Vices containing notes on topics including 'On Medicaments', 'An Introduction to Physick', and detailed descriptions of diseases; and a volume bearing the name 'William [...] 1750', containing notes on topics including 'Of the Gout', and references to and extracts from publications including the London Practice of Physick, which was originally published in 1685. 'Fordyce' is written at the top of several pages, possibly referring to George Fordyce (1736-1802) who lectured on the practice of physick from 1764.

Papers of George Ray, 1815-1816, comprising a volume of manuscript notes taken by Ray at the lectures of Sir Astley Paston Cooper, titled Lectures on Surgery, Delivered at the theatre of St Thomas's Hospital by AP Cooper, Esq in the years 1815-1816; and an undated newspaper cutting titled 'The Country Surgeon (A True Bill)' containing a poem about the life and work of a country surgeon.

Papers of William Blair-Bell, 1909-1938, relating to a range of professional subjects, including Blair-Bell's cancer research work (particularly his use of lead) and the wider organisation of cancer research; the Liverpool Medical Research Organisation; the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the British Empire Publishing Company; the British Congresses of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (BCOG); and Blair-Bell's nursing home and practice in Rodney Street. It also contains papers and correspondence concerning Eardiston, Blair-Bell's country estate near Oswestry; Rossall School, Preston, which Blair-Bell attended as a pupil and on whose council he later served; his wife's memorial in the church of St Chad's Haughton, Shropshire; and other personal matters. Only a small amount of material is concerned with the founding of the BCOG. Some pieces contain confidential medical records about individual patients.

Two of these notebooks are of a combined noted and cases format i.e diary entries on visits to own or colleagues' patients rather than as supporting second-hand information or for reference. Records, c1946-1985, of Christian Aid and its predecessors, comprising correspondence, minutes and reports concerning aid projects in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean; papers of the Directorate including constitutional material, committee minutes of the British Council of Churches, and Christian Aid Board papers; organisational material including correspondence with other fund-raising bodies such as Oxfam, the Red Cross, and a selection of Christian Aid publicity material including Annual Reports.

Papers, 1913-1938, c1967, some undated, of the Rev Ebenezer Mann and his wife Mabel Mann. They include published newsletters (1913-1938) from Ebenezer and Mabel Mann, detailing their work in Kansu province, China; parts of a typescript work by Ebenezer Mann relating to his years in China; autobiographical notes made by Mabel Mann; and a small collection of photographs of China including photographs (1920-1921) of the aftermath of the earthquake in Lanchow, Kansu province. Also included is a list (1934) of missions and workers in China with the China Inland Mission, prepared by Ebenezer Mann.

The collection contains minutes of the NUTC and the LUTC from their foundation to the 1950's. Files date from the 1940's to 1984. It also contains a minute book of the Sunday Closing Special Campaign Committee (SCSCC) which transferred its work to the NUTC in 1903 (this Committee may have been appointed by the NUTC). The secretary of the NUTC (and LUTC) also served as one of the two general secretaries on the SCSCC. A minute book of the Free Churches Pledge Signing Campaign Committee (FCPSCC) appears in the collection. This committee was dissolved in 1911. Representatives of the NUTC and LUTC attended meetings which were held in Memorial Hall, Farringdon Street, and in 1911 the secretary of the NUTC and LUTC was also secretary of the FCPSCC.

A minute book of the Society of Cogers appears in the collection probably because an NUTC member, H. Weightman (later NUTC secretary and treasurer), was acting secretary of the society c.1919.

The recording of financial income and expenditure into ledgers was not always done. A number of blank ledgers deposited suggest the aim of entering such information, but it was never achieved. An almost complete set of audited, annual summary accounts from 1911 to 1975 provide the bulk of information on finance.

Papers of Dr William Barton, 1960s-1970s, contain Barton's collection of reel to reel audio tapes and reflect his professional interest in the work of Professor George MacDonald. Tapes notably include recordings of lectures made by MacDonald on subjects including yellow fever, malaria and health services, 1960s; broadcast series of lectures 'The Road to Hell', featuring Barton speaking on bilharzia and schistomiasis, 1960s, and an interview with a Mrs Barton on Girl Guides, in the Government Information Studio in St Vincents, 1970s.

Papers of Geoffrey Douglas Hale Carpenter, 1913-1930, comprise a travel diary which records Carpenter and his wife Amy Carpenter née Frances Thomas-Peter's experiences including trips to Uganda for his research on sleeping sickness between 1913 and 1930; diary entries documenting their day to day activities including photographs, pressed flowers, press cuttings, concert programmes and their wedding invitation.

Papers of Sir Aldo Castellani, 1924-1951, comprise correspondence and reprints of publications and articles. Correspondence relates to his role in the School of Tropical Medicine as lecturer and Director of Tropical Mycoses including the establishment of the Ross Institute, his work as a lecturer at the School, terms and conditions of his appointment as Director of Studies on Tropical Mycoses; telegrams from overseas; press cuttings on his return to Italy to fight against the allies in World War Two.

Papers also concern the death of Garnham and notably comprise correspondence from Claude Garnham, including a letter of thanks to Peters for writing Garnham's obituary; copies of many obituaries within various journals and newspapers including two in French; programme of service and thanksgiving for the life and work of Garnham and correspondence regarding the founding of an award in Garnham's memory, 1994-1995,(Garnham 02).

Papers of Professor John David Gillett, [1941]-1993, relate to his work concerning mosquitoes and tropical diseases and comprise published and unpublished works by Gillett and others, and original research carried out by Gillett.

Published work includes The swarming habits of some Danish mosquitoes by E T Nielson and H T Nielson, (Entomolgiske Meddeleber, 1963) and The essential role of temporal discontinuity in swarming insects by J D Gillett (Flying Kites, Biologist, 1993). Unpublished work includes a copy of Gillett's bound PhD 'Embryonic Diapause in the genus aedes Meigen (Diptera: Culicadae)', 1952.

The collection also notably contains a notebook used by Gillett to collate research and encloses correspondence with Kenneth C Smithburn and A F Mahaffey of Yellow Fever Research Institute, Uganda regarding samples, including mosquitoes, sent by Gillett, 1941.

Papers of Michael Stewart Rees Hutt, 1962-1991, comprise diaries and papers relating to his work as a pathologist, largely in Uganda and notably include accounts of Uganda Safari, 1990; visit to Uganda, 1981; safari to Western Province, 1962; Uganda trip, 1967. Papers include a report on Makerere University Medical School, 1982 and a paper titled 'Geographical pathology in medical education' by Hutt and I J P A Loefler, 1969.

Scientific notes, reports, photographs and correspondence, 1924-1957, relating to expeditions to East Africa, 1935-1936, and Southern Rhodesia, 1926-1928 and 1933-1935 to investigate malaria; report by Leeson on mosquito specimens collected by Captain Ward from the Island of Socotra, Yemen; a malaria survey in Arabia; includes scientific notes, tables, graphs, drawings, maps, photographs, correspondence and reports.
