Records of Sutton's Hospital in Charterhouse. Covering dates for the bulk of the collection are 1611-1993, although Thomas Sutton's personal papers date from the late 16th century and some of the property deeds are from the 13th century onwards.

The collection is divided into sections, which include the following:

Governors' Papers (ACC/1876//G). This section includes microfilm copies of the Assembly Order Books (minutes of governors' meetings), 1613 to 1982. The original volumes are retained at Charterhouse.

The Founder's Papers (ACC/1876//F) consist of personal documents of Thomas Sutton, and administration papers of his executors. Among the former are two bonds from Robert Catesby, one of the conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot (ref: ACC/1876/F2/3).

Pensioners' and Scholars' Records (ACC/1876/PS) include admission registers and nominations of individuals. The register covering admission of the first scholars and pensioners is kept at Charterhouse, but a microfilm copy is available at the Greater London Record Office (see ACC/1876/PS1/5).

Personal papers of two prominent pensioners are also included in this section. Horatio Honniwill Hammick was a wine grower on the Duke of Wellington's Spanish estates, and was responsible for introducing Montilla wine to the United Kingdom. His papers (refs: ACC/1876/PS5/1-20) include some information on the wine industry. Henry Novra was a fine art lecturer and drawing teacher, who died at Charterhouse in 1917. His papers (refs: ACC/1876/PS5/21-40) contain mostly financial and testamentary documents.

Estate and Manorial Records (ACC/1876/E and ACC/1876/MR) Records of the Hospital's land holdings were originally, as now, divided into these two sections. Over time, however, the distinctions between the two have become blurred, and there is now some overlap between the sections.

Deeds (ACC/1876/D) Most of the property deeds in this section have been catalogued in their original bundles, not individually. Detailed index cards for individual deeds were compiled by the Charterhouse archivist, and these can be ordered from the strongroom (refs: ACC/1876/D/IN/1-3). Please do not order deeds straight from these cards, as they do not mention when items are unfit.

The Miscellaneous section (ACC/1876/M) includes a copy of the Charterhouse school register of old boys 1892-1910 (ref: ACC/1876/M5/2), and also some information on marriages and burials in the Charterhouse Chapel (refs: ACC/1876/M4/1-5).

Records of Lee and Pembertons, solicitors, 1882-1953, including bills of costs; a series of bundles consisting of draft bills of costs each followed by the relevant copy out-letters; general copy out-letter books kept in chronological order and indexed by correspondent; files of correspondence relating to the maintenance of the Eyre Estate, arranged alphabetically by street name; Counsels' fee books; share ledger and general office files.

Records of the London Council of Social Service and related organisations. The records reflect the variety and depth of activity undertaken by the LCSS. There is a good range of committee minutes, correspondence files and publications. The correspondence files approximate to the various departments although the contents of each one can be quite diverse.

Records of the Linoleum Manufacturing Company, 1863-1949, including eight general meeting minute books (also containing balance sheets and trading accounts (profit and loss accounts from 1895), lists of shareholders and stockholders, creditors and debtors, investments and bills receivable); office papers; cards giving linoleum gauges and weights, rubber cloths gauges and weights and linoleum mean figures; and photographs of the offices, a French linoleum factory, a linoleum design and Frederick Walton seated at a desk.

Records of Edwin Ashdown Ltd, 1890-1955, including minute book, agenda books, register of debentures, plate books of bibliographical interest arranged by name of composer (with annotations covering 1898-1968), a catalogue and lists of publications and distribution book.

Records of Edmonton Petty Sessional Division, comprising minutes of summary proceedings held at Watch House and Angel Inn, Edmonton, 2 Jan 1837 - 21 Dec 1838. Cases heard include felonies, assault, larceny, highway offences, retailing beer etc. without licence, obstruction, injury to property etc. Volume records detailed statements by witnesses, statutes governing cases, outcome of each case. At rear of volume is a summary of cases heard with details of fines etc. Name index at front of volume. Volume also includes records of medical prescriptions prepared for named persons, January 1859.

Much of the material comes from the office of the Clerk to the Trustees of the Market.

Papers, 1870-1934, collected by the solicitors in the course of their work, comprising deeds and legal documents relating to 178 and 180 High Street, Deptford; including leases and mortgages.

Records of J R Eve of Hitchin, valuers and surveyors, 1879-1932. The documents relate to the work carried out by the London office when assessing the value of property for rating purposes, and for the most part to the time when Herbert Trustram Eve was head of the firm. J.R. Eve and Sons were often employed by local authorities to undertake the re-evaluation of properties in their area. This collection includes material relating to work carried out for the Hendon Union and Parish of Harrow, the Borough of Paddington Assessment Committee and the Willesden Chamber of Commerce. Reference books form a significant part of the collection - they take the form of small notebooks bound in green card and appear to have been taken by the surveyor to the site of the properties which he was surveying. The books were used for making notes about the composition of buildings, acreage of land etc. They show the calculations made by the surveyor when assessing rateable values. The notes are sometimes rough, usually in pencil, and the dates are not always apparent. The collection also includes a selection of general cases which show other aspects of the firm's work.

Records of Watney, Combe, Reid and Co Ltd and Watney Mann Ltd, 1870-1983, comprising Director's minute books, 1898-1968; General Meetings minute books, 1898-1973; photograph albums, mainly showing public houses in London, ?1870-1880; photographs of Truman delivery vehicles (Watney Mann merged with Truman), 1895-1983; press cuttings relating to Sears Holdings Group bid for Watney Mann Ltd, 1959.

Records of the Kashrut Division of the London Beth Din, 1951-1983. The collection consists mainly of financial records together with some material on koshering work at private functions and newscuttings scrapbooks.

Records of the Jewish Memorial Council, 1899-2001. The archive mainly consists of files and volumes of minutes and working papers. The records of the Reverend Malcolm Weisman are noteworthy for the detail they provide on the survival of Judaism in small, often isolated, communities.
