Notes by W E Ingham describing 'the true nature of the X-ray research carried out by Godfrey Hounsfield in creating the X-ray scanner. The notes also cover the little known but massive involvement of Godfrey and his team in assisting the newly formed EMI Medical Division whilst, at the same time, still continuing their research in the Research Laboratory. The difficult conditions under which Hounsfield worked make the magnitude of his achievement even greater.

'The notes are not a comprehensive history, but they provide a record of some of the key events that may be known only to the Director of the Central Research Laboratory (CRL) and a few others, before the information is lost.'

Letter from Charles Alexander Saunders of 17 Cornhill, London [to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, engineer to the Great Western Railway], 28 Sep 1833. Requesting on behalf of the committee [of the Great Western Railway] that [Brunel's] surveyors should 'furnish as full a list of the land owners in the line of our railway as possible ... with any general information they can furnish as to the opinions and wishes either of them - or of the occupiers of property ... There are several points of great interest about the railway depending at this moment and your opinion will be required on them ... The negotiations with the influential landowners near London should be quickly proceeded with, as we cannot be blind to the obstacles of a competition with a company asking only for £200,000 or £250,000 of subscription against our own demand in millions ...'

Sargant was an outspoken supporter and practitioner of what he termed the 'practical rather than philosophical approaches' to the treatment of mental illness, pioneering and publicising various physical treatments and vociferously opposing the use of psychoanalytic techniques. The majority of the collection consists of his writings, both published and unpublished, supplemented by a small quantity of correspondence and other material. In addition, the collection contains clinical records for about 500 cases from Sutton Emergency Hospital in the 1940s.
