Papers of William Francis Victor Bonney, 1898-1953, comprising the typescript and accompanying illustrations of Bonney's memoirs; 3 volumes of reprints of papers and articles written by Bonney, 1898-1938; 2 copies of a dinner speech attributed to Bonney, 1952, with accompanying correspondence; and letters to the librarian, 1924-1942.

The papers relate exclusively to Bryce's service for the Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons. The material is principally correspondence but includes minutes, agendas and circulars and a sequence of printed membership booklets, 1934-1958. There are papers relating to the foundation of the Society in 1933, including the replies to the original invitations to join the Society (sent out by Bryce), to relations between the Society and the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, and to overseas visits of the Society to Switzerland in 1934 and to Berlin and Bruges in 1937. Later material reflects the adjustments necessitated by the Second World War and the establishment of the National Health Service.

Papers of Elizabeth Isham and Thomas Sendall, c 1659, comprising a manuscript volume of recipes. The title page contains two titles. The first 'This is a booke of phisick of Elizabeth Isham' and the second 'Thomas Sendall Scripsit An[no] domini 1659'. The titles are in two different scripts. It was possibly originally started by Elizabeth Isham and then continued by Thomas Sendall. Other scripts also occur in the volume. Some recipes are titled with names of their 'creators' eg Lady Simon, Dr Stevens, Lady Dowglasse, Mrs Dormor. Inserted after page 48 there is a short note on the theatres of Elizabethan London.

Papers of Benjamin Allen, 1710-1723, comprising two manuscript volumes with their original vellum bindings, titled Praxis Medica. Medical observations towards a knowledge and cure of diseases (1710) and Conclusions in several subjects as Anatomy Medicin, Nature, Problems of the State and Accidents of the World (1723). Both contain medical notes; descriptions of diseases; cases notes; natural history information; and astronomical information.

Papers relating to Sir John Eric Erichsen, 1881, comprising a volume listing the names of subscribers to the University College London Testimonial Fund for Sir John Eric Erichsen in 1881. The fund was to obtain a permanent memorial to acknowledge his services to the School of Medicine of University College, and to students of surgery in all parts of the world. Including a printed list of names and a letter inviting subscriptions to the fund, folded into the front of the volume.

Papers of Berhard Siegfried Albinus, 1721-[c1846], comprising an undated manuscript, probably containing a student's lecture notes, titled Collegium Physiologiae, [c 1721-1770]; letters from Bernhard Siegfried Albinus to Robert Nesbitt, 1721-1728; and a manuscript copy of the text and plates of Albinus' Tabulae anatomicae musculorum hominis by Thomas Howitt, [1785-1846].

Papers of Sydney Humphryes, 1646-c1668, comprising a volume containing 'receipts' or recipes compiled by Sydney Humphryes, although the volume contains a variety of other hands. Including recipes for fruit waters and hair dyes, as well as treatments for burns, vomiting, the plague, and scrofula.

Papers of Sir Herbert Taylor, 1826-1827, comprising a volume of manuscript notes titled Memorandum, between the 9th June 1826 and 5th January 1827, describing the condition and state of mind of Prince Frederick, Duke of York (1763-1827) during his last illness.

Papers of Sir Alfred Platt, 1968-1986, comprising typescript and photographs relating to The Story of the Manchester Surgical Society, 1970-1971; diaries of trips to the United States of America 1928 and 1946, 1978; typsescript of the lecture The romance of surgery: The Manchester Ship Canal and the birth of accident services, 1968; copy of a postcard to Leslie Turner (FRCS) concerning arrangements for the centenary celebration, 1986; and a presentational folder titled The Transatlantic Connection 1913-1986: A Tribute to Sir Harry Platt by Allan M McKelvie, 7 Oct 1986.

Papers of John Thomas Woolhouse, early 18th century, comprising two manuscript volumes written in French and Latin, probably containing transcripts of lectures given by Woolhouse. The title on the spine reads Traite des Malad. de l'Oeil.

Papers of James Fernandez Clarke, 1829, comprising a volume titled Notes of a Reader Volume I containing information relating to topics including drunkeness; stammering; the nervous system; travels in Turkey and Palestine; classification of the animal kingdom; painters and painting; idiosyncracies; the pursuit of knowledge; poetry; juvenile delinquency; and natural history.

Latin manuscript, c 17th century, comprising the Institutionum Chymicarum and Opera Chemica, containing information relating to the history of chemistry, chemical theory, and explanations of various chemicals represented by alchemical symbols based on signs of the zodiac.

Papers of Eleazer Gidney, 1824, comprising a manuscript of Treatise on the Structure, Diseases and Management of the Human Teeth; and a certificate of copyright dated 14 May 1824 for registration of Treatise on the Structure, Diseases and Management of the Teeth, awarded by the Clerk of the Northern District of New York.

Papers of Johannis Freer, 1744, comprising a volume titled Sum ex Libris Johannis Freer. Tyr. Henric. Hollier Pharmacop. Birmingham. Octob. 24 1744. Observationes Chirurgicae, containing notes from lectures, published lectures and anatomical demonstrations, on topics including blood, bones, the eye, Catarracts, the ear, and midwifery. Lecturers include Dr Nicholds, Dr Harvey, Mr Sharp, Mr Girl, Mr Fern, Mr Cheselden, Mr John Douglas, Mr Craddock, and Dr Monro. Venues of lectures include St Thomas' and Guys Hospital.

Papers of Ronald Francis Woolmer, 1942-1964, comprising personal items, 1962; press cuttings, c1962; lectures, 1958-1962; publications by Woolmer, 1942-1964; Bernard Price Memorial Lecture, 1962-1964; notes and photographs, 1950s-1960s; and other publications, 1960-1962.

Papers of Robert Horton, early 19th century, comprising a manuscript volume titled Anatomy Notebook, Horton containing notes on subjects such the central nervous system, bones, joints, ligaments, blood vessels, testicles, brain, ear, eye and heart. The volume is undated but there is a watermark of 1818. In addition, on page 103, Horton mentions the discovery of a membrane in the eye by Dr Jacob. Jacobs Membrane, a layer of the retina containing rods and cones was first described in 1819 by Irish Opthalmic surgeon Arthur Jacobs (1790-1874). Therefore the volume can be dated to after 1819, and was probably written in the early 19th century.

Papers of Thomas Morrison, 1782, comprising a volume titled Clinical Lectures by John Gregory MD, late Professor of the Practice of Physic in the University of Edinburgh, containing manuscript notes of lectures, and patients' case notes.

Undated notes and pencil sketches of anatomical and pathological subjects, including bones and muscles; the face; the spine; the eye; and the heart. Some sketches of the spine are in colour, and one sketch uses the pages as flaps to lift and reveal different layers.

Papers of John Ramsbotham, 1799-1806, comprising a volume titled Clinical Cases, containing manuscript case notes, 1799-1806. Including midwifery, innoculations, vaccinations, and the treatment of pneumonia and typhus fever (which was epidemic at Wakefield Gaol in 1803). Also containing biographical information about John Ramsbotham, compiled by John William Walker, FRCS, who donated the volume.

Papers of George Backett Batten, 1881-1882, comprising a manuscript volume of lecture notes of physiology lectures by William Rutherford, at the University of Edinburgh.

Papers relating to naval medical history, 1932, comprising a volume titled Grievances of Naval Surgeons containing precis of letters published in The Lancet from 1827-1902, compiled by 'Surgeon Captain, Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, September 1932'; 2 letters from Christopher Lloyd of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, to Miss Jessie Dobson, concerning a historical enquiry (24 Oct 1960), and a visit to look at 'your Lancet volume'; and a volume containing issues which appeared in The Lancet in the 19th century, for instance, the exclusion of naval medical officers from the King's Levees, a new mode of punishment in the Navy, hospital ships, and the Gilbert Blane Medal.

Papers of Eliza Millard MacLoghlin, 1905-1928, comprising a collection of typescript poems by MacLoghlin, titled Sir, What are these? and dedicated to "My Niece, Aileen Millard"; 10 manuscripts of music written by W G Cook, for songs based on MacLoghlin's poetry, c 1927-1928; and 4 cards and letters, c 1905.

Papers relating to the San Carlos Royal College of Surgery in Madrid, 1826, comprising a manuscript translation into English of Real Cedula de S.M y Senores del Consejo, en que se aprueben, y mandan observar las ordenanzas formadas para el gobierno economica y escolastico del colegio de cirugia est ablecido en Madrid con el titulo de San Carlos. Ano 1787. En Madrid. En la Imprenta de Don Pedro Marin.The title translates as The Royal Letters Patent of H.M. and the members of the Council, in which the laws formed by the Economic and Scholastic Government of the College of Surgery, established in Madrid by the title of San Carlos, are approved of, and ordered to be observed. Ano 1787. In Madrid. Printed by Don Pedro Marin.

Papers of William Maiden, 1812-1824, comprising a cutting from the National Register containing a letter to the editor from T Paxton, on 'Mr Tipple's Extraordinary Case', 26 Jul 1812; a copy of the second edition (1813) of the original publication by Maiden titled An Account of a Case of Recovery after an Extraordinary Accident, by which the shaft of a chaise had been forced through the thorax. The label on the front was written by Sir Richard Owen. Including an autograph letter from William Clift to William Maiden, 18 Feb 1824 and an original drawing by William Clift; draft title pages for the re-publication of the Shaft Case by William Maiden, including notes on Mr Tipple's health for the 10 years following the accident, and an account of the post-mortem; manuscript drafts for the introduction of the re-publication of the case; manuscript containing notes on Tipple's health after the accident. These notes were probably written by J W K Parkinson, Mr Tipple's physician after the accident, and his name is written in pencil at the top right on the first page; draft manuscript notes on the Post Mortem of Mr Tipple, 1823; a letter from James Parkinson to Sir William Blizard, 26 Mar 1823 concerning observations made by William Clift on the post-mortem of Mr Tipple; draft manuscripts of a commentary on the case by Sir William Blizard; 22 letters from William Maiden to William Clift, Sir William Blizard and Mr Carpenter concerning the re-publication of the case details, the plates to be published with it, and the procedure for presenting copies of the work to various gentlemen and institutions. Including replies from William Clift and Mr Carpenter to William Maiden. Papers of James Murie, 1864, comprising a manuscript titled Report by James Murie on the conditions etc of the Microscopical Collection, May 1864 relating to the microscopical collections at the Hunterian Museum. The report was presented to the Museum Committee; and a manuscript titled Final Report on the Microscopical Collection, November 1864 presented to the Chairman of the Museum Committee.

Papers of David Henry Monckton, 1850-1852, comprising a manuscript volume of notes, drawings and sketches titled Diary of Occupation, as Student in Human and Comparative Anatomy to Royal College of Surgeons of England, including topics such as the sorting and cleaning specimens, remounting preparations, writing descriptions of preparations, and carrying out and describing dissections. Monckton's work is countersigned by James Luke (Member of the Court of Examiners 1851-1868) and Frederick Carpenter Skey (Member of Council 1848-1867, and Professor of Anatomy and Surgery from 1852).

Papers of John Henry Sylvester, 1852-1853, comprising a manuscript volume of notes titled Occupation during Studentship at the Royal College of Surgeons, 1852, describing the actitivies of Sylvester whilst he was a Student of Anatomy, including dissections, remounting specimens, listing and cataloguing specimens, reading in the Library, and hospital visits. Sylvester's work is countersigned by Frederic Carpenter Skey, Professor of Anatomy and Surgery from 1852.

Papers of H Frantz, c1930, comprising 10 sepia drawings of specimens of congenital dislocation of the hip, from the Musee Dupuytren, Paris. Most were reproduced by Sir Thomas Fairbank in an article titled "Congenital Dislocation of the Hip", published in the British Journal of Surgery, Volume 17, 1929-1930. The article was the published version of the Lady Jones Lecture delivered by Sir Thomas Fairbank at the University of Liverpool on 28 Feb 1929, when he was President of the British Orthopaedic Association.

Papers of the London Society of Thoracic Surgeons, 1952-1992, comprising a volume of minutes of Society, otherwise known as Charlie's Club, 1952-1981; a photocopy from the British Journal of Surgery, volume 38, 1950, containing the first acknowledged 'Charlie', a published record of a mistake made by the surgeon Mr John Rashleigh Belcher (FRCS) during a lobectomy operation; and menus and photographs from the annual dinners, including signatures of those in attendance.

Papers relating to Sir Richard Jebb, 18th century, comprising a volume of manuscript notes, in various hands, relating to various diseases and conditions. The volume has no title page, but an old catalogue at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, records it as Observationes Medicae.

Papers of Albert Wilson, c1870, comprising a volume titled [H]uman [P]athology, Prof. Saunders, 2 containing manuscript notes by Wilson, taken at the Pathology lectures of Professor Sanders at Edinburgh University; and a loose sheet containing notes on Tubercular Phthisis. The sheet of paper is from the Edinburgh Medical-Missionary Society's Training Institution and Dispensary at No 39 Cowgate. Wilson was resident physician at the Cowgate Dispensary.

Papers of D Becquet, 1750, comprising a manuscript volume in Latin, titled D. joh. Georgio Waltherio Silva Ophthalmica exscripta, ... Budissa 1679. Collecta D Becquet 1750 compiled from Johann Georg Walther's Silva Opthalmica... (1679), on the diseases of the eye.

The Loudoun Medical Papers, relating to John Campbell, 1762-1763, comprising 3 large volumes of correspondence and other manuscripts relating to the medical hospital during the British expedition to Portugal in 1762-1763 where Lieutenant-General John Campbell was second in command of the English Army; letters from John Hunter; and a written catalogue of the letters compiled by George Ernest Gask (FRCS) in 1935-1936.

Papers of Henry Nathaniel Rumsey, 1786-1787, comprising 4 volumes of manuscript notes by Rumsey titled A Course of Lectures on Surgery by Mr John Hunter, Surgeon to St George's Hospital, 1786, taken at lectures on surgery by John Hunter.

Papers of Charles Dagge Seager, c 1800, comprising a manuscript transcript by Seager, of the notes taken at lectures on surgery by John Hunter, arranged into aphorisms by Charles Brandon Trye.

Papers of James Finlayson, 1893, comprising a typescript of a publication by Finlayson titled Was John Hunter a student in the University of Glasgow. This article was published in the British Medical Journal on 8 Jul 1893, and examines whether the "John Hunter" who matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1745, was the famous "John Hunter," surgeon and anatomist.
