Sections A and B consist of papers found in the Old Dead Registry of the London School of Economics in 1980. Section A files have LSE Registry numbers and concern School affairs. These include some confidential School business. The general correspondence files (B2) include material relating to organisations such as For Intellectual Liberty and the Eugenics Society, and the subject files include material concerning juvenile delinquency, populations, and the Commission on Higher Education in the Colonies. A small quantity of additional material, listed as Section C comprise engagement diaries and letters of congratulation to Sir Alexander on becoming Director of LSE.

The Hetherington collection consists predominantly of a series of notes of interviews with political figures from Britain and overseas kept between November 1958 and July 1975. Rough notes were made after the interviews which were later sent for typing; where a lengthy delay intervened prior to typing this is indicated. Frequent accounts are given of meetings with Labour leaders from Hugh Gaitskell to James Callaghan and there were regular meetings with Jo Grimond, leader of the Liberal Party, in the early years. Regional development and the Scottish government are frequent themes throughout the British interviews and there are discussions of the spy scandals of the early 1960s and the industrial disputes of the early 1970s. Foreign affairs figure strongly including Rhodesia's declaration of UDI, the independence of African states, the Vietnam War and the pursuit of a settlement in the Middle East. Britain's negotiations towards entry into the EEC can be traced. The section 'Additional Papers' contains notes on an attempted merger of The Times and the Guardian in 1967.

This collection consists of reports, statistics, and publications relating to the operations of the International Tin Council in the United States, the Belgian Congo, and Bolivia. The collection also encorporates material relating to world tin production before the establishment of the ITC, including papers on buffer stocks and tin mining in Malaya and Burma during the 1930s.

Papers of Sidney Joseph Madge, [1920-1929], comprising notes and transcripts of seventeenth century material relating to the disposal of Crown lands during the Commonwealth period (1649-1658) collated by Madge for his DSc Thesis presented at the London School of Economics in 1929, and published in 1938 as The Domesday of Crown lands: a study of the legislation, surveys and sales of Royal estates under the Commonwealth (Routledge and Sons, London, 1938). The material largely consists of notes and transcripts of Parliamentary Surveys and Parliamentary Land Sales.

Papers of Professor Thomas Humphrey Marshall, 1919-1980, mainly comprising texts and notes for sociology lectures, 1930-1980, on subjects including industrialisation, poverty and social policy; notes made by Marshall on reading material, 1930-[1979], notably on childcare, health, housing, elderly people, social policy and welfare; official papers on post-war Germany, 1942-1950, mainly essays and lectures by Marshall while a member of the Foreign Research and Press Service and reports and talks as Educational Adviser in the British Zone; reports and papers by Marshall for UNESCO and UNESCO journals, 1959-1964; papers relating to visits to Nigerian universities, 1964; drafts, reviews and other writings by Marshall, 1919-1975.

Papers of David N Deacon, 1998-1999, comprise detailed, semi-structured interviews with representatives from selected extra-governmental agencies (including both 'recognised' and 'non-recognised' quangos) regarding media and publicity issues, and with national and local news professionals regarding their use of quangos as news sources and their relationship with these executive agencies. All the interviews were made between 1998 and 1999. With a file containing interview schedules and 4 floppy disks.
