Papers, 1916-1948, mainly relating to the life and career of Maj Gen George Mackintosh Lindsay, notably his service as Chief Instructor, Royal Tank Corps Central Schools, Bovington, Dorset, 1923- 1925, Inspector, Royal Tank Corps, War Office, 1925-1929, and Commander of 7 (Mechanised Experimental) Infantry Bde, Southern Command, 1932-1934. From the 1920s and 1930s there is a rich series of correspondence with Col Charles Noel Frank Broad, Lt Col Frederick Elliot Hotblack, Brig Percy Cleghorn Stanley Hobart and Capt Basil Henry Liddell Hart, all of whom were leading figures in the development of British armoured forces, the mechanisation of the Army, tank design and improvements to military training. The series includes original notes and memoranda by both Lindsay and his correspondents. Lindsay's correspondence with Gen Sir Archibald Percival Wavell, 1935-1944, covers armoured tactics, the mechanisation of cavalry and Wavell's visit to the USSR to observe Red Army manoeuvres, Sep 1936. Papers on Lindsay's appointment as Brigadier General Staff, Egypt Command, 1929-1932, include memoranda by Gen Sir George Francis Milne, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, and Maj Gen Sydney Capel Peck on the future organisation of mechanised units in Egypt. Notable photographs in the collection include a series on Lt Col Giffard Le Quesne Martel's 'mechanical coffin' one man armoured carrier, 1934.

Papers, 1780s-1790s, largely of Captain Francis Light, including several hundred Malay letters, primarily letters received by Light and his business partner, Captain James Scott, from rulers and dignitaries of the Malay Sultanates.

The letters cover the history of relations, negotiations and conflicts between Light, the rulers of Kedah and the Governor General in Bengal leading up to and including the settlement of Penang in 1786 and the armed conflict of 1791. There are also letters dealing with business affairs between Light and Malay nobles such as the purchase, shipment and sale of commodities, ammunition, slaves and opium, and the maintenance of good political and economic neighbourly relations; letters from the Sultanate of Selangor; letters from royal merchants at the Malay courts; and letters concerning trade from various rulers and nobles in the Peninsula and Sumatra, especially from Aceh, Asahan and other North-Sumatran states.

In addition, the collection contains several dozen letters and documents from the same period relating to Bencoolen (Benkulen) and the West Sumatran Presidency, which are unrelated to Light.

Capt Sir Basil Liddell Hart's papers reflect his position as the foremost military theorist in Britain between World Wars One and Two, as an influential military correspondent and as a prolific author of books on military theory and history. Authenticated copy by Gobinet de la Court, tabellion (scrivener) royal of Laon, France, 31 Dec 1457, of letters of King Charles VII of France under the great seal dated at Tours on 31 Jul 1436, letters of the Generaux des Finances dated at Tours on 2 Aug 1436, and letters of the Gens de la Chambre des Comptes dated at Limoges on 16 Aug 1436, by which the Abbey of St Vincent was to pay to Poton, Lord of Xaintrailles and captain of royal troops in Laon, the sum of 3,000 livres for the prosecution of the war in return for an annual pension of 300 livres assigned on royal revenues in the Vernandois until the sum was repaid. An endorsement sets forth that the Dean and Canons of the Church of Our Lady at Laon have acquitted the King and all others concerned of the rent mentioned in the copied letters, and have delivered the originals to the King's Receiver.

The majority of this correspondence is based around the following themes: James's work for the Ordnance Survey (particularly the book of maps and photographs produced by the OS of Jerusalem), James's investigation of the corrosion by sea water of the copper bottoms of ships, letters discusing George Biddell Airy's proposed system of projection and personal letters of invitation to James.

The majority of the photographs relate to 'The Wreck of the RHONE', and in particular, of a survivor of the shipwreck, a cabin boy called John Bailey. (The RHONE was a steam packet ship, built in London in 1865. It sank off the coast of the Virgin Islands in October 1867, after being struck by strong winds. Of the 197 people on board only 24 survived. The wreck of the RHONE is now regarded as one of the world's most famous wreck dives).

The sketchbook consists mostly of sketches of trilobites drawn whilst James was in Ireland and the notebook contains notes on military topics.
