Papers of the Lord Lieutenant of Middlesex, 1779-1965. The material includes general papers produced by the Clerk to the Lieutenancy covering the lieutenant's work and organisation of the militia (L); papers from the Advisory Committees which drew up, with the Lord Lieutenant, a list of Justices for appointment by the Lord Chancellor (L/AC); papers from the appointment of special constables following the Chartists' petition and unrest on the continent in 1848 (L/SPC); and the papers of a committee organising a volunteer company to defend the county (L/RV).

The majority of the publications are concerned with alcohol and the control of drinking.

Records of Improved Industrial Dwellings Company Limited, housing developer, 1863-1984. The records relate to company administration and to a much lesser extent, the tenants. The earliest registers in the collection, a register of Estates 1863-1896 is of particular interest as it includes estate accounts, block plans, mortality rates and coloured plans of dwelling type (c.1870). The records relating to Greencoat Properties Ltd and The Soho, Clerkenwell and General Industrial Dwellings Company Ltd include Directors Annual Reports and Accounts 1885-1976. The only register to name tenants is the Deposit Account Register, 1935-1970.

Memorial Book produced by the local branch of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families Association, listing by parish men from Uxbridge serving during the First World War. Indicates whether killed in action or families helped by SSFA. Pamphlets on SSFA bound at back.

Records of the National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), formerly the National Council of Social Service, (NCSS). This is a large archive and one of great interest to those studying both charities and their development and the changing attitudes and ideas of voluntary aid from the early 20th century.

Internal Services records consist of the main series of minutes of NCSS/NCVO committees, Interdepartmental groups, Members' groups and Associated Bodies, regional and central organisation and the histories of various NCSS/NCVO departments. There are also short series of financial material, legal material and documentation from the Advice Unit and Rural Department of the NCVO.

The Membership Division records cover policy and the Research Department while the Public Affairs Division contains the National/International and Overseas Departments, the Press and Parliamentary sections including the Information Department and one of the largest series, that of publications.
