Records of the Court of the Chief Rabbi, London Beth Din, 1904-1988. The bulk of the archive transferred to London Metropolitan Archives are the administrative papers and general correspondence of the Court, and in particular that of the Clerks and Registrar. There are also files concerning consultations the Beth Din undertook with the Government on the Matrimonial and Family Proceedings Bill in the 1980s. Some correspondence and rough notes of the individual Dayanim and records relating to work done with refugees in the Second World War have also been deposited.

Plans and drawings for the proposed redevelopment of the area of Paddington north of the Great Western Railway and south of the Grand Junction Canal and dissected by the Harrow Road. The proposals are for replacement of narrow congested streets and small houses with a dual carriage speedway and blocks of flats with open ground in-between them.

Records of the Greater London Council Architect's Department's Historic Buildings Division, which were passed to the London Region of English Heritage. Highlights of the archive include plans and files for the refurbishment of Covent Garden Central and Flower Markets, which was carried out during the 1970s and 1980s. There is practically a full set of plans, around 800 in total, showing the main project and a range of sub-projects. The earliest drawing in the whole collection is the original site plan for Covent Garden, dating to 1828.

Other large projects include the rehabilitation of houses in Albury Street, Deptford (1954-1979), restoration of the terraces at Crystal Palace (1952-1989) and restoration work at Holland House (1952-1985). There are also plans of a group of projects covering work on Thames bridges, giving information on superstructure and cast iron work. Related files can be found in the list for GLC/AR/HB/01.

The collection contains a large and important series of plans and drawings for buildings and other projects, dating between 1828 and 1993. The GLC allocated job numbers to each project it undertook, with the prefix HB, and these plans are listed in job number order and are also arranged by size (our ref: ACC/3499/EH/02 for AO size and ACC/3499/EH/05 for AQ size). Plans outside the GLC period, ie 1828-1965 and 1986-1993, were produced by the LCC or by English Heritage and consequently do not have job numbers. These plans have been listed in alphabetical order by the premises or street involved and again have been arranged by size (ACC/3499/EH/03 for AO size and ACC/3499/EH/06 for AQ size).

Most of the plans were used as working drawings, and many were re-used for later projects. Where possible the original order of the drawings has been re-established, but as a result of this re-use there are some gaps and many will not be in date order as old plans were removed and other contractors' drawings added in.

In many cases the files for individual projects will complement the plans, and they too have been arranged by number; those produced by the GLC's Historic Buildings Division were given reference numbers beginning AR/HB (the HB number will correspond with the number allocated to any plans), and those produced by English Heritage after 1986 had the prefix LD. These original reference numbers have been included in the main description field of this list (ACC/3499/EH/07/01).

Other material relating to individual projects has been listed as ACC/3499/EH/07/02-05. This includes specification and some folded contract drawings, surveys and reports, photographs and order books for repairs. Framed awards from the Civic Trust, which were awarded to English Heritage for certain refurbishment projects, have been catalogued as ACC/3499/EH/11/01-02.

Administrative Files were generated by the GLC, and by English Heritage through its Works, Administration and Survey and General Sections. They include such topics as staffing, finance, organisation, technical files and civic design, and include minutes of several bodies, such as the GLC's Historic Buildings Division itself and the Faculty Jurisdiction Commission. They have been listed as ACC/3499/EH/08/01-06. Some town and borough planning schemes are also included in the collection, under ACC/3499/EH/10.

Borough Lists: English Heritage began compiling a "visible index" of buildings within the Greater London area during the 1970s. It was intended to be a reference point for listed buildings, those proposed for listing and those on the supplementary list (i.e. Grade III listed). The Grade III listing was subsequently abolished and the buildings either absorbed into the main statutory list or included in councils' own Local Lists.

The volumes of the visible index in this collection (ACC/3499/EH/01) cover the London Boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Enfield, Hammersmith, Haringey, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow. Much more of Greater London was included in the index but the volumes were subsequently lost.

During the early 1980s the whole of Greater London was systematically re-listed, and the lists published in book form, in borough order, by the Department of the Environment. Most of these "Green back" books are represented in this collection (ACC/3499/EH/09/01-05), with the exception of those for Enfield, Havering, Haringey, Merton, Newham, Southwark and Waltham Forest. Some supplementary lists and local lists are also included.

Records of J Lyons and Company Limited, food manufacturers and caterers, 1891-1995. The archives reflect all aspects of the company's history. There are some of the usual company records relating to management, shareholding and administration, but the collection is particularly strong in what may be termed ephemera. There are hundreds of photographs, from 1887 up to the present day, a few films and videos, and large collections of press cuttings, advertisements, menus and even a set of lithographs which were commissioned by the company after the Second World War as a way of brightening up Lyons Corner Houses.

Records of Municipal Mutual Assurance Ltd, 1900-1990, including articles of association, policy registers, claims registers, files on important case law litigation (e.g. Municipal Mutual V Royal Insurance Co. Ltd. 1911), reinsurance files, annual reports, photographs and press-cuttings.

Records of British Vinegars Limited, 1747-1960. The earliest and greater bulk of the records concern Beaufoy and Company of South Lambeth which became part of British Vinegars Limited in 1932. These records include legal documents, papers relating to property, papers relating to vinegar production, staff records, trade correspondence and sales records, financial accounts, printed matter and photographs.

Records include histories, advertising material, newspaper cuttings, photographs, financial accounts, minutes.

Records of Brown Brothers, ironmongers, 1943-1969, comprising financial accounts; price lists and catalogues of tools, of locks, latches, keys and blanks, lock furniture, door furniture, door closers, hand tools, cutlery and adhesives.

Records of Westminster Bridge Commissioners, comprising volume of draft contracts and papers relating to the Bridge, including 'Act for building a Bridge cross the River Thames, from the New Palace Yard in the City of Westminster, to the opposite Shore, in the County of Surry' and articles of agreement and contracts for various aspects of building the bridge and provision of materials.

The volume is a later re-binding, possibly of the 19th century. The contracts had been paginated, and so, presumably, bound together at an earlier date. The pagination runs from 153 to 261, the right hand (odd) pages only being numbered; the surviving items thus appear to be part only of an earlier compilation. From the note made and signed by Taylor White on p.207, and the endorsements on pp [194] and [208], it appears likely that the papers were among the working papers of the Commissioners themselves.

Records of the General Cemetery Company, Kensal Green, 1830-1930, including correspondence; papers relating to shares; financial accounts; bonds; grants, transfers and declarations of ownership of grave spaces; burial registers (1842-1850 only, other registers are held at Kensal Green Cemetery) and accounts of fees paid to incumbents of various parishes for persons removed from their parishes for interment in cemetery.

Records of Holliday and Greenwood Limited, building contractors, 1901-1978. This collection consists of a general file compiled by G Holliday to record contracts, a paper by G Holliday entitled "The Apprentice Master Scheme in the Borough of Brentford and Chiswick, 1947-1950" and a series of photographs recording various buildings worked on by the company.

Records of the Independent Gas Light and Coke Company, 1827-1875, comprising minutes of Directors and Shareholders meetings with some enclosures including letters, notices, circulars, and prospectuses.

Records of James Lock and Company including series of day books (1781-1969, with gaps) and order books (1805-1998, with gaps). There were always two order books in use at any one time, one in the shop and one in the office, and as a result the dates overlap in many volumes. There is also a series of rough order books, called waste books (1798-1819), and special order books series for ladies' hats, for hunting wear and foreign and export orders. There are product statistics for 20th century. Very few product drawings, or fabric samples are included (for samples for special orders 1995-1998 see B/LK/422).

All these series contain similar elements of information, namely the customer's name and address, description of hat ordered and the total cost.

The collection also contains financial records, including ledgers, cash books, customer accounts and bad debts which summarise outstanding payments due from customers; staff salaries (1927-1954) (B/LK/619) and R Lincoln's executors account (B/LK/254).

Records of the City of London Gas Light and Coke Company, 1705-1881, comprising deeds of title and co-partnerships and letters, relating to premises in Water Lane, Pigs Quay Wharf and other premises between Tudor Street and Water Street; and deeds relating to premises between Whitefriars Dock, Victoria Embankment and Tudor Street, near to Dorset Street.

Records of Spicers, formerly undertakers, later funeral directors, 1891-1969. The records consist of business registers and journals. Although the period covered is 1891-1969, the high commmencing folio in volume one (foliating through successive volumes was common stationers' practice in the nineteenth century) suggests that there may have been an earlier volume which has not survived. Details range from the size of coffin in the first volume to comprehensive coverage of names, addresses, ages, where died, where service held, where buried or cremated, grave nos, cost etc. in the third. Also two photographs of premises.

Records of Spalding and Hodge, stationers, 1781-1911; and subsidiary or merged companies including Busbridge and Hodge, papermakers and Suttaby and Company, booksellers. Also records of the Stationers' Book Society. The records include business agreements, legal documents relating to properties, wages books, cash books, stock books, bills, rules and regulations for staff, letters patent, brochures about Spalding and Hodge and their history, inventories, correspondence and price lists. Stationers' Book Society records comprise minutes, accounts, and an address by Thomas Spalding.
