Papers of William Francis Victor Bonney, 1898-1953, comprising the typescript and accompanying illustrations of Bonney's memoirs; 3 volumes of reprints of papers and articles written by Bonney, 1898-1938; 2 copies of a dinner speech attributed to Bonney, 1952, with accompanying correspondence; and letters to the librarian, 1924-1942.

Medical log of the slave-ship LORD STANLEY, kept by Christopher Bowes the ship's surgeon between 23 March-26 July 1792. The ship traded between the African coast and the Isle of Grenada, West Indies. Of the 389 slaves on board, 16 died. The log gives the daily sick rate and there are brief notes of the cases and treatment.

At the end of the manuscript, Christopher Bowes states it is a "just and true journal" which he then presents to Custom House, at St George, Grenada in 1792. This is witnessed and signed by George Ferguson [Possibly George Ferguson, Governor of Tobago c1781]. The next page of the volume contains a statement signed by George Ferguson, saying that this is a "true copy of the original journal", and is dated September 5th 1792. Therefore it is likely that this manuscript is a copy of the original journal, which was perhaps retained in Grenada.

At the front of the volume is a letter to Arthur Bowes Elliot (grandson of Christopher Bowes) dated 5th October 1911, from Sir Ronald Ross (FRCS) 1857-1932, regarding the contents of the volume, and the diseases the slaves were suffering from.

Containing letters and inscriptions from supporters of the publication of the volume, including Edmund Dickinson, Physician to the King's person and family, 24 Mar 1678-1679; Walter Needham, Charterhouse, 14 Apr 1679; Thomas Allen MD, Physician in Ordinary; Edward Warner, Physician in Ordinary; Edmund King, Physician in Ordinary to his Majesty; Gulielm Sanders MD; Hugh Chamberlen, Physician in Ordinary to his Majesty; A P Frasier; Charles Scarburgh; and Censors (of the Royal College of Physicians): Joannes Micklethwaite, Thomas Witherley, Samuel Collins, Thomas Millington, and Edvardus Browne. Including 36 tables of drawings.

The papers relate exclusively to Bryce's service for the Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons. The material is principally correspondence but includes minutes, agendas and circulars and a sequence of printed membership booklets, 1934-1958. There are papers relating to the foundation of the Society in 1933, including the replies to the original invitations to join the Society (sent out by Bryce), to relations between the Society and the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, and to overseas visits of the Society to Switzerland in 1934 and to Berlin and Bruges in 1937. Later material reflects the adjustments necessitated by the Second World War and the establishment of the National Health Service.

The collection is divided into four main groups: The first group contains papers relating to William Clift's work as conservator of the Hunterian Museum. This is the largest of the four groups and contains a number of sub divisions such as explanation and display of specimens, expanding the collections, administration of the museum, and correspondence. This group also contains the transcripts made by Clift and others of the Hunterian manuscripts. The second group contains work carried out by William Clift as an illustrator for publications. The third group contains a small amount of personal material that is in the collection. The fourth group contains transcripts and copies of manuscript material by William Clift that is held in other repositories such as the Natural History Museum.

Papers relating to Sir John Eric Erichsen, 1881, comprising a volume listing the names of subscribers to the University College London Testimonial Fund for Sir John Eric Erichsen in 1881. The fund was to obtain a permanent memorial to acknowledge his services to the School of Medicine of University College, and to students of surgery in all parts of the world. Papers of Roland Morris Fawcett, 1820-1827, comprising case notes, surgical notes and a commonplace book, 1822-1823; and lecture notes divided into sections titled 'Home', 'Hope', 'Murray', and 'Turner, Duncan and Alison', 1820-1827.

The papers include publications, some in manuscript or draft, biographical material, material relating to committees and organisations (British Society of Periodontology, Nuffield Foundation), and correspondence. Very little remains of Fish's professional research material. Fish had worked carefully through his papers after his retirement, and many items bear lengthy comments and evaluations, personal recollections of his career and colleagues, and reflections on the state of dental health.

Papers of Johannis Freer, 1744, comprising a volume titled Sum ex Libris Johannis Freer. Tyr. Henric. Hollier Pharmacop. Birmingham. Octob. 24 1744. Observationes Chirurgicae, containing notes from lectures, published lectures and anatomical demonstrations, on topics including blood, bones, the eye, Catarracts, the ear, and midwifery. Lecturers include Dr Nicholds, Dr Harvey, Mr Sharp, Mr Girl, Mr Fern, Mr Cheselden, Mr John Douglas, Mr Craddock, and Dr Monro. Venues of lectures include St Thomas' and Guys Hospital.

Papers of Mr Gardiner, 1774-1775, comprising a manuscript volume of lecture notes containing Anatomical Lectures delivered by Mr Joseph Else, Surgeon, from October 1774 to April 1776 at his new anatomical Theatre in St Thomas's Hospital, London, 1774-1776; Question from the Medical Society at Edinburgh to Mr P Owen; Suttons Method of Inoculation; Preparatory Regimen; Mr Joseph Else's Lectures upon Surgery delivered at St Thomas's Hospital, May 1775. Papers of George James Guthrie, 1841-1856, comprising a letter from Guthrie to William Clift, 15 Jun 1841, requesting a skeleton hung up in the theatre. Clift has noted at the end of the letter "This note came a week after the date"; and an obituary for Guthrie, from the Illustrated London News, 10 May 1856.

The Hamilton letters, 1748-1788, comprising 3 letters from John Hunter to Professor William Hamilton (1758-1790), 1783-1788; 3 letters from the donor Louisa Hamilton to Sir Arthur Keith, 1928; letter from Reverend William Hamilton, Minister of Bothwell, to his son Thomas Hamilton (d 1782), 18 Oct 1748; 2 letters and transcripts from Dr William Irvine to Thomas Hamilton (d 1782), 1771; 4 letters from William Hamilton (1758-1790) to his mother, 1777-[1778] and 7 letters to his father, 1777-[1778], referring to his activities in London, including his acquaintance with William and John Hunter and the attendance of their lectures.
