Papers of Albert Wilson, c1870, comprising a volume titled [H]uman [P]athology, Prof. Saunders, 2 containing manuscript notes by Wilson, taken at the Pathology lectures of Professor Sanders at Edinburgh University; and a loose sheet containing notes on Tubercular Phthisis. The sheet of paper is from the Edinburgh Medical-Missionary Society's Training Institution and Dispensary at No 39 Cowgate. Wilson was resident physician at the Cowgate Dispensary.

Pharmacopoeia in usum nosocomii apud Cestrienses, 1771, comprising a manuscript volume written in Latin and English, listing medicines with their effects and directions for use. The translation of the title is Pharmacopoeia in use at Chester Hospital.

Papers of Florence Nightingale, 1876-1956, comprising notes on sick nursing addressed to the editors of Every Girl's Magazine, 19 Nov 1881; photographs of autograph labels for Nightingale's collection of shells. Including a letter from G Ellis Flack from Nottingham University, where the shell collection is now housed, 1951; autograph in pencil; correspondence with Dr John Shaw Billings, 23 Oct 1876-4 Dec 1876, requesting advice from Nightingale on the building of a hospital in Baltimore by the Johns Hopkins Trust; and 2 letters relating to the efforts to locate the correspondence, Apr-May 1956.

Papers relating to naval medical history, 1932, comprising a volume titled Grievances of Naval Surgeons containing precis of letters published in The Lancet from 1827-1902, compiled by 'Surgeon Captain, Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, September 1932'; 2 letters from Christopher Lloyd of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, to Miss Jessie Dobson, concerning a historical enquiry (24 Oct 1960), and a visit to look at 'your Lancet volume'; and a volume containing issues which appeared in The Lancet in the 19th century, for instance, the exclusion of naval medical officers from the King's Levees, a new mode of punishment in the Navy, hospital ships, and the Gilbert Blane Medal.

Diary of a resurrectionist, 1811-1812, probably Joshua Naples, describing his activities supplying bodies to anatomists in London, including to St Thomas's and St Bartholomew's Hospitals.

The Loudoun Medical Papers, relating to John Campbell, 1762-1763, comprising 3 large volumes of correspondence and other manuscripts relating to the medical hospital during the British expedition to Portugal in 1762-1763 where Lieutenant-General John Campbell was second in command of the English Army; letters from John Hunter; and a written catalogue of the letters compiled by George Ernest Gask (FRCS) in 1935-1936.

Papers of Sir William Lawrence, c1817-1860, comprising an account of patients admitted into the London Infirmary for Diseases of the Eye, (cases under Lawrence and Tyrell), 1817-1825; notes of hospital cases; notes used for delivery of lectures in surgery; notes and papers, including addresses made at St Bartholomew's Hospital; notes for lectures in ophthalmic surgery; notes and papers relating to comparative anatomy and physiology; notes of hospital cases; notes on surgical subjects; commonplace book containing case notes on his patients; lecture on ophthalmic surgery; case notes on ophthalmic patients of Lawrence and Travers.

The collection represents the contacts through two centuries of a group of men and women of high distinction ramifying through the medical, legal and literary worlds. It forms a not unimportant fund of minor historical material, comprising more than a thousand letters from nearly five hundred writers.

The autograph letters are mounted in 10 large volumes: -

1. Letterbook of John Arbuthnot (1667-1735). The most interesting letters are those of Pope and Swift and their circle written in 1714 when the Queen's death involved the destruction of their political hopes. Letterbook of William Hunter (1719-1783). It includes letters from Tobias Smollett the novelist, from Dr. Johnson thanking Hunter for presenting his book to the King, and from Edward Gibbon 'proposing himself the pleasure of attending some of Dr. Hunter's Anatomical lectures.'

2. Hunter and Baillie family letters and reminiscences, including the letters written by John to William Hunter from active service in 1761-62; poems by Sophia Baillie, Jenner family letters.

   3. Letters to Matthew Baillie from the Royal Princesses. Letters of the Bentham family, including three from Jeremy Bentham. Autograph letter collection includes letters from Thomas Carlyle and Charles Dickens. 1735 - 1845

   The Hunter Baillie collection comprises also a number of manuscript books, the oldest of which is a commonplace book of the early eighteenth century, giving details of family history of the Hunters. Matthew Baillie's notebooks include: -

Journal of a tour in Europe in 1788 and A short memoir of my life, 1818. 'Some brief observations from my own experience upon a considerable number of diseases', in two volumes. n.d. With these are his casebooks, fee-books and other professional notes, including details of his attendance on King George III. Baillie records that his total annual fees mounted from £121 in 1792 to £9,995 in 1815.

Papers of the Founatin Mental Hospital, 1914-1927, comprising case notes; photograph albums and glass slides; and donation information, excerpts and reprints.

Papers of John Falconer, 1852, comprising one manuscript volume of notes detailing activities, such as dissections performed and visits made, whilst a student of anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons, 1852-1853.

Photographs of doctors and nurses at a field hospital during First World War, includes portrait group, off duty and first aid exercise, no date, c1914-1915. Photographs (stills) from a film of Tudor Edwards by the British Council on chest surgery in 1944, procedure, care and convalescence including a note that the patient was actually an actor.

The papers relate exclusively to Bryce's service for the Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons. The material is principally correspondence but includes minutes, agendas and circulars and a sequence of printed membership booklets, 1934-1958. There are papers relating to the foundation of the Society in 1933, including the replies to the original invitations to join the Society (sent out by Bryce), to relations between the Society and the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, and to overseas visits of the Society to Switzerland in 1934 and to Berlin and Bruges in 1937. Later material reflects the adjustments necessitated by the Second World War and the establishment of the National Health Service.

Papers of Lord Russell Claude Brock, 1926-1977, comprising 5 volumes of surgical notebooks, 1926-1976; an undated manuscript of a book on Astley Cooper; correspondence relating to the annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England; material for a British Medical Journal article on the importance of environmental controls in the operating room and the intensive care unit, c 1975; a file of charts and readings relating to clinical temperature observations: material for a British Medical Journal article titled 'Observations on central and peripheral temperatures etc relating to shock', c 1969; and material for a Journal of Physiology article on the thermal sensors of the heart, 1977.

Papers of Sir Anthony Alfred Bowlby, comprising a diary, 1914-1919, recording his experiences as Consulting Surgeon to the British Army.

This collection contains a single manuscript volume, the 'Naval Surgeons Casebook'. The volume begins with details of cases, symptoms and cures of Nathaniel Bedford's patients at St George's hospital during 1781. The rest of the volume contains descriptions of cases, sickness, and treatments during his travels whilst a ship's surgeon in the West Indies during 1781-1783.

Papers of Alexander Henry Bartlett, 1823-1835, comprising a testimonial written for Bartlett by Sir Astley Paston Cooper, after his studies at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, 4 Dec 1823; a letter from Cooper to Bartlett regarding a certificate for 'your new hospital', 20 May 1835; a testimonial from Cooper to Bartlett, for his position at Ipswich Hospital, 5 Jun 1835; and an undated letter from Cooper to Bartlett, containing a prescription.
