A collection of anthropological field notes from work among the Pemon (Arecuna) Indians in south-east Venezuela (notes, field books and tapes), 1970-1971, and 1975. Comprising two small field notebooks with semi-processed field data and two surveyor's notebooks; five field notebooks and one sketchbook containing genealogical schedules and computer coding forms with census data encoded on them; nine tapes (reel to reel); 13 cassettes and 7 packets of census cards (cassette tapes recorded in 1971 and 1975, containing life histories, religious ceremonies, and interviews; census cards and census photos.); envelope of maps and sketch diagrams, Venezuela and copies of depositor's correspondence, Mar 1982.

Papers of W O McEwan, 1884-1885, including four field notebooks, Apr 1884 - May 1885, of a journy from Durban to Mozambique via the Zambezi river, Livingstonia and Karonga on Lake Nyasa and of a journey from Lake Nyasa to Lake Tanganyika; astronomical observations, on river Kwaka and at the African Lakes Corporation station at Maruru, British East Africa, May 1884; notes taken on route from Lake Nyasa to Lake Tanganyika, including particulars of the countries passed through, notes on an alternative route from Chirimadamusi to [Diumkorolo]; three sketch maps of British East Africa and aprinted map of 'Route survey Nyassa to Tanganyika by James Stewart, 1879' with red ink line of 'proposed variation' added.

Seven bound journals of Andrew F Balfour with enclosures including three journals covering Balfour's service on the HMS Challenger scientific expedition; one journal describing his command of the gunboat HMS Stork off east Africa (1889-1891); and three journals describing his command of HMS Penguin on a Pacific survey (1893-1896). Loose papers and newspaper cuttings are enclosed with the journals.
