Letter from John Bright of One Ash, Rochdale, Lancashire to Professor Blackie of Edinburgh, 13 Apr 1885. 'I found your volume [Scottish Highlanders and the Land Laws (c1885)] when I went to London ... The whole story of the past and present of the Crofter class is not a little one of as melancholy character and their future is not easily perceived.'

Papers created by Alfred Claude Bromhead during his time in Russia, 1916-1917, and a varied collection of miscellany compiled by him, with items dating from 1510 to the 1930s. These include a contemporary illustration of the funeral procession of Anne of Cleves in 1557 and a collection of engravings of the life of the Virgin by Alberto Durer from 1510. There are also volumes of sketches of London and letters and newspaper cuttings, the subjects of which include the history of London, criminology and The Gentlemen's Magazine.

Cavalier Playing Cards collection, 1886, comprises a bound volume containing a pack of cavalier playing cards, designed in the era of Charles II, forming a complete satire of the Commonwealth, published by the Clarendon Historical Society, with accompanying typescript explanation on each card by Edmund Goldschmid (1885-1886).

Letters from George Chalmers to Sir Joseph Banks, 1788-1804. Including a letter eulogizing Arthur Young's Example of France a warning to Britain, 26 Feb 1793; and another discussing a publication of [William] Cobbett's, 14 Apr 1802.

Documents, 1360-1867, concerning the family of de Cusance, of Franche Comté. The documents include letters on the family's expenses, sales, marriage, appointments to offices, a genealogy of the family and a printed fragment announcing a requiem mass. Also contains an inventory of items, made by the Archives Générales de la Noblesse, Paris.

Volume contains "Historia del Duende de Madrid" (77 pages) and "Papeles Curiosos, y Politicos, y Poeticos, Ynutulados el Criticos..." (196 pages). El Duende was also known as Manuel de San Jose.

Elemens de Finances collection, [1690-1710], comprises an anonymous handwritten treatise dealing with the earnings and expenses of the kingdom - inferred to be France - ("cinq grosses fermes") and its administration. It also deals with financial administration in general.

A volume giving information on the quantity and value of goods imported and exported to and from England, 1696-1701. The volume has the book plate of John Holroyd, Earl of Sheffield.

French revolutionary pamphlets collection comprises pamphlets by the Interior Ministry, the Police Ministry and other official bodies in the French republic. Pamphlet by the Chief of Police Sotin warns citizens that the enemies of the revolution are regrouping (c1794). A pamphlet of 1795 also urges vigilance.

Fair copy of lecture notes made from lectures given by Professor George Long, Professor of Greek at University College London, on 'Description of Egypt, Persia, and the Grecian Islands', delivered in 1830-1831, 'The Provinces of Dareios' and 'The Islands of the Aegean Sea'; and by Professor Henry Malden, also Professor of Greek at University College London, on 'Notes on the sixth book of Thucydides', delivered 1831-1832. The notes are accompanied by finely drawn maps.

A short history of the poor house Hospicio de San Fernando in Madrid and an account of its present (1747) constitution and administration; copies of documents (1734-1738) relating to the administration of the poor house unders its previous Governor, Gaspar de Molina y Oviedo; a letter of 24 October 1748 to Cardinal Infante, Luis Antonio, asking for financial help to meet increased food prices.

Decorated copy of a deed (13 January 1677) amalgamating two church societies of shoemakers and giving revised and clarified rules for the new Fraternities. Another deed (11 September 1731) gives further modifications and clarifications. The scribe gives the date of the folio as 1732.
