Notes of lectures on surgery by Andouille, noted in the form of questions and answers. Produced in Paris, 1735-1750.

These papers comprise the manuscript collection of F[rederick] Bacon Frank (1827-1911). They include a medieval medical miscellany (MS.550), material by or relating to the 17th century Yorkshire physician Nathaniel Johnston (MSS.3083-3086 and 6080), and some Bacon family administrative documents (MS.6079). One item relating to Nathaniel Johnston that did not form part of the Bacon Frank collection has been catalogued with it for convenience (MS.3086).

Notes of Charles Barbeyrac's practice taken chiefly by his students. Some case histories are included in MS.7126.

Papers of Jean-Baptiste Biot, c 1800-1937, including correspondence and a translation of Biot's Memoir on the Circular Zodiac of Denderah.

Notes from Pierre Chirac's lectures, 1696-1734.

Remèdes pour un grand nombre de maladies tirés du Dictionnaire oeconomique de Mr. Noël Chomel, prêtre et curé de St. Vincent de Lyon. Par ordre alphabétique. After the index in Vol. II, there are 16 ll. of additional medical receipts written by the compiler and by several contemporary hands. Produced in Lyons.

Anatomy by Henry Cline and Mr. Astley Cooper, Surgeons, 1804, St. Thomas's Hospital, Southwark, London, and by Henry Cline, Junior. (Vol. I.) The second volume contains notes of lectures, extracts, receipts, and some case-records at Guy's Hospital, by the same hand. Illustrated by a few rough pen-drawn anatomical figures, etc. The first volume is lettered on the spine: 'Anatomical Notes', and 'End of the first volume' is written on the last leaf of text. The second volume is lettered 'Notes.', and appears to be a continuation of another volume now missing. Some of the notes in this second volume are dated January and February 1805. Notes by John Dixon on medical matters and on things of personal interest to him such as astrology and photography spanning his entire career, 1848-1903. MS.5191 comprises more formal material, namely certificates and indentures.

Receipt books, with medical and culinary recipes plus pasted-in material including newspaper cuttings, c 1785-1860.

Prescription books from 16 Jun 1745-25 Dec 1747 and 12 Nov1768-30 Nov 1769. The second volume contains entries for medicines prescribed for the Duke of Wellington, who was born at Mornington House, 24 Upper Merrion Street, Dublin on April 29, 1769. On the outside of the upper cover is a slip dated 17/8/1899, which states that the original earliest entry in the volume for 30 April 1769 has been cut out and framed for display in the shop at 49 Dawson Street, Dublin: another dated July 2 has also been cut out and 'given to Fielding Ould [?] Esqre' (i.e. Sir Fielding Ould, Dublin obstetrician, 1710-89). This manuscript still contains entries for the Countess of Mornington 2 May; 'Lord Mornington's young child', 4 May; 'The Countess of Mornington, the young child' 16 May; 'Lady Mornington, Master Frank Wesley, Young son', 25 May; 'The Hon. Master Arthur Wesley', 17 June. This last entry is also found for 2 July, 3 July, 6 July. According to the notice in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Wellington used the form 'Wesley' for his name until 1798. Produced in Dublin.

Research notes and drafts relating to two major works by Fraser-Harris. MSS.8109-8112, 8114-8120 and 8122 relate to the history of antisepsis and the essay 'Antiseptics before Lister: a historico-medical survey', which was the Prize Essay in the History of Medicine, University of Glasgow, 1932/3. MSS.8236-8255 and 8968-8989 relate to The History and Lore of Cymric Medicine, a proposed Wellcome Historical Medical Museum study that was never published. Wellcome and Fraser-Harris died close to one another and the momentum of the project was lost.

Papers of Thomas Graham comprising notes, chiefly on chemistry, and some correspondence, 1821-1868.

Lectiones in primum librum primi Canonis Avicennae, a Gerardo Cremonensi translati, 1505-1517.

The collection comprises correspondence, writings and administrative material relating to the Jenner family, particularly Dr. Edward Jenner (pioneer of smallpox vaccination) and the associated Black and Davies families, 1680-1877.

The material on Edward Jenner includes papers relating to organisations set up in the aftermath of his vaccination discoveries: the National Vaccine Establishment, the Royal Jennerian Society and the London Vaccine Institution.

Notes of lectures of Jacques Lazerme, physician, 1729-c 1755.

Collection of cookery, medical, veterinary, and domestic receipts, 1748. The first volume contains cookery receipts, and is in two parts each with an index. The second volume contains 'Physical receits', 'Cattle receits', and 'Curious receits': each of these has its own index.

Collection of prescription-books of an unidentified London [Islington?] Chemist. From an entry inside the fly-leaf of Vol. 10, it appears that these prescription-books were commenced in 1835. The name of the firm responsible for this collection has not been ascertained, and has not been found in any of the volumes, but from the names of physicians appended to many of the prescriptions it seems to have been in Islington or in that part of London, for a large proportion of these are associated with the Islington Dispensary. Among these are many entries for Henry Bateman, FRCS [1806-1880] who was surgeon and later consulting surgeon to that institution. [Cf. Obituary notice in the Lancet 1880, ii, p. 874.] Pasted inside the upper cover of Vol. 18 [1861-1863] is a cut-out signature of Florence Nightingale [1820-1910]. Pasted inside the upper and lower covers of Vol. 27 [1884-1888], are two printed advertisements of J. Ramel, Crosby Hall Chamber, 24 Bishopsgate St., who describes himself as a 'Sanitary India-Rubber and Chirurgical Instruments Manufacturer and Importer'. One of the lists includes contraceptives. They are here entered as 'F.L.s', priced at from 6/6 per gross: there are also 'Marguerites'-for use by women-at 2/- each. Produced in London.

Collection of medical receipts and remedies with several indexes. On p. 6 of Vol. I is the date 1726, but there are additions by other hands, one of which on p. 528 of Vol. II is dated 1784. In Vol. II, paginated 511-514, is a printed 'Propriétez de l'élixir de M. Garrus médecin', probably contemporary with the MS.

Essays, 1941-1943, on the following subjects: Medieval Medical and Alchemical Manuscripts and Incunabula; Medicine in Classical Antiquity; Chinese Medicine, Japanese Medicine, The Medicine of the Indians and The Medicine of the Ancient Persians; Medieval Medicine and Surgery and Biographical and historical essays.

Secreti medicinali. A collection of medical receipts: the first volume mainly in Italian, with a few entries in Latin; the second volume in Italian and Latin, with additions by other hands. Titles within a pen-drawn ornamental border. Vol. I is entitled 'Secreti medicinali'; Vol. II was apparently originally entitled 'Secreti di medicina', but some additions were written in, so that it now reads 'Experimentati/Secreti de Medicina/Raccolti/Per sanare molti mali e/conservare la Sanità'. A considerable part of this volume seems to be by the same hand as the first volume. Volume I is in four Books, and the compiler's initials are given in Receipt No. 77 of the first book: 'provato de me X.P.' and in the next entry: 'che io X.P. ho veduto l'efetti'. The date 1685 occurs on fol. 10 of Book II, and 1699 on fol. 28 of the last Book. Volume II is in two Books. The second has an engraved historiated title-page, with a blank space inscribed: 'Secreti di Medicina Anno' 1699. This book contains 533 numbered receipts. Facing No. 438 is a rough pen-drawing of a distilling apparatus: opposite No. 438 is an inserted printed broadside advertising 'Il vero Balsamo Aureo di Lorenno, chiamato Balsamo Divino' printed at Modena, but undated. This folio sheet has been cut down and folded. This remedy, and an 'Acqua Triacale' by the same Lorenno, are entered as Nos. 438 and 439 of the MS. The latest date in this volume is 1725, in the margin of Receipt No. 530.

Le Pharmacien accomply. Ou le Cabinet pharmaceutique. Contenant des moyens familières et facilles pour bien connoistre, distinguer et médicamenter les maladies ordinaires et extraordinaires qui peuvent arriver à l'homme, tant par préceptes astrologiques et Galénistes que par remèdes chymiques. Avec l'Antidotaire. Le tout reduict en ordre pour suppléer au véritable Médecin, et mis en pratique par F[rère] Is[aac] Q[uatroux] R[éligieux] M[édecin] or[dre] M[inime]. These MSS., now divided into two volumes, formed originally one volume. There is a pen-drawn historiated frontispiece to the 'Antidotaire': texts within black rules. The Antidotire is dated 1662, the other volume 1663.

'Cosarelle da me praticate et esperimentate', a collection of medical receipts. The title as given above is taken from the Dedicatory Epistle.

Personal correspondence and papers of Louis Westenra Sambon, 1893-1923. These reflect his interest in the history of medicine and diseases caused by blood-borne parasites.

'A Booke of seuerall receipts / for severall infirmities both in Man and / Woman, and most of them eyther tryed by / my selfe or my wife, or my Mother / or approued by such persons as I / dare giue Credit vnto, that haue / Knowne the experiment of it / themselves'. Compiler's holograph MSS., with additions by other hands. Ff. 7-13 of the Index to Letter E contain 'SMELT (Rev. C.) A few precautionary hints to his parishioners on the subject of Cholera Morbus'. This was probably written in 1831, and the Author, Rector of Gedling in Notts from 1824, died in the same year. Mayerne and Bate are referred to as contemporary physicians. The latter is frequently named, as also are other persons of the same period, such as Bancroft, Bishop of Oxford, i.e. John Bancroft [1574-1648], who was made Bishop of Oxford in 1632.
