Personal papers of John Charles McGuire, schoolmaster. The records illustrate his career and the photographs in the collection relate to his school and its wartime evacuation to Newport Pagnell, Bucks (1939-1941).

Records of George Brown, chandler, 1821-1843, comprising letter book dated 1821-1842, which contains information on Brown's business dealings including much comment on the state of shipping at various times, many references to steam vessels as early as 1821, and a large number of letters and memoranda relating to the seizure by the Portuguese of the steamship 'Lord of the Isles' in which Brown had an interest and subsequent attempts to get redress.

Also a memoranda book, 1833-1843, mainly recording brief memoranda of letters sent and received from 'George' or about 'George' who would appear to have settled in Canada and made attempts at farming and business. Evidence suggests that 'George' was the son of George Brown who was joined for a while in Canada by his mother and sisters. The book gives considerable information concerning shipping to and from North America; settlers in Canada and their acquisition of land; early government of Canada; references to the Canada Company, an account of 'stores required for a settler going to New Zealand' and details of goods sent out to 'George'.

The collection covers Pyman's career from 1937 until 1963 when he suffered a severe stroke which forced his retirement in 1964. The earliest papers date from Pyman's work with the Royal Tank Cadre in converting the 17/21 Lancers from a cavalry to an armoured regiment. There are also papers from Pyman's period as an instructor at the Staff College in Quetta, India, 1939-1941. Pyman was involved in the World War Two campaigns by the 8 Army in the Western Desert, in 1941 as General Staff Officer with 7 Armoured Div, 30 Corps and in 1942-1943 as Commander of the 3 Royal Tank Regiment, 10 Armoured Div, 30 Corps. The papers consist mostly of Pyman's assessments of lessons learned from the ongoing campaigns particularly with regard to tanks and armoured units. In 1944-1945 Pyman was Brigidier General Staff, 30 Corps, 2 Army in the Normandy landings and the invasion of Northern Europe, with particular responsibility for organisation and planning of the Rhine crossing and advance to the Baltic. This is reflected in the papers which largely consist of planning studies and reports for the operations involved, this section also contains maps used in the campaign. Pyman's next appointment was as Chief of General Staff, Allied Land Forces, South East Asia, 1945-1946 which is documented by a series of diaries which reflect the tasks faced by Pyman in this command including dealing with the build up of tension between newly liberated former colonies keen to assert their right for independence and the former colonial powers such as France and Netherlands. Pyman spent 1946-1949 as Chief of Staff, Middle East Land Forces and kept monthly diaries which form the bulk of this section of the collection. The diary entries and additional papers reflect the debate over policy in the Middle East in the British Government and Military command, they include detail on the British withdrawal from Greece, the problem of illegal Jewish immigrants and their internment in Cyprus, the end of the British mandate in Palestine and the the effect of this on relations between Britain with Egypt and the other Arab states and the subsequent Arab Israeli conflict. This section of the collection also contains correspondence between Pyman and Maj Gen Sir Miles Christopher Dempsey on personal matters and on the Middle East. There are also papers from Pyman's work at the Ministry of Supply as Director General of Fighting Vehicles, 1951-1953, Director of Weapons Development, War Office, 1955-1956 mostly brief diary entries and lecture texts. Pyman was also General Officer Commanding, British Army on the Rhine, 1953-1955 and General Officer Commanding, 1 British Corps, 1956-1958 and the papers relating to these commands consist mostly of lectures, reports and directives reflecting his interest in armoured divisions and training. There are some papers, mostly personal correspondence and press cuttings, from Pyman's final command as Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces Northern Europe in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). The collection also contains correspondence relating to Pyman's role as Colonel Commandant of the Royal Tank Regiment and The Royal Armoured Corps and a series of letters covering the reorganisation of the Berks and Westminster Dragoons, of which he was Honorary Colonel. The rest of the collection consists of diaries, correspondence, speeches, writings including the draft copy and papers relating to his autobiography, some preparatory work on a history of the 2 Army and reference works. The collection also includes the Boer War diaries and other papers of Col James Redmond Patrick Gordon who commanded the 1 Cavalry Bde of the South African Field Force 1900-1901 which were given to Pyman by a friend.

Papers of the Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens, 1903-1938, relate to the central organisation including the constitution and notably comprise management and committee minutes, reports and plans regarding the organisation's aims and objectives and finance records; files on the activities of the state and regional level sub-groups; files concerning women's organisations, youth organisations, members and officers, publication and propaganda, activities of other Jewish organisations, Zionism, emigration to Palestine, training for Jewish youth, Anti-Semitism, political, economic and legal situation for Jews in Germany, CV's relationship to religion and religious organisations, and the attitudes of writers and politicians to Jews.

The Runnymede Collection comprises books, pamphlets, journals, newsletters, bulletins, press cuttings and working files. The Trust's original working research files contain correspondence, press releases, reports, journal articles and other documents. Subject areas include immigration, deportation, citizenship and nationality, race and racism, politics and race relations, far-right political groups in Britain and abroad, employment, housing, inner cities, social services, health and the National Health Service, education, policing, crime and racially motivated crime, prisons, ethnic minorities and the legal system, demography and the ethnic population in Britain, migrants and ethnic issues in Europe and the European Community, women from ethnic groups in Britain, the media and ethnic minorities, human rights.

The papers of Kathleen and Millicent Coleman comprise three classes of material: the private papers of the sisters and the Coleman family, 1842-1957; records relating to the National Children's Home, 1935-1981; and the Pestalozzi Village Trust, 1948-1989. The records of the Pestalozzi Village Trust, 1948-1989, comprise typescript notes compiled by Millicent Coleman, who served on its governing Council. These consist mainly of Council minutes and supporting material, 1948-1989; Committee minutes including Finance and Management Committees, 1953-1985; Annual Reports and Accounts, 1961-1974; policy reports on the development and strategic direction of the Village, 1959-1973; correspondence with Millicent Coleman regarding Trust business and liaison with the National Children's Home, 1953-1985.

The papers comprise research material accumulated by Baruch Hirson and Riva Krut on Jews in South Africa, and include photocopy of a list of Jews resident in Johannesburg, c1915-1917; extract from memoir of Joseph Ratner (c1871-1960), a Jewish settler in South Africa, 1902; notes of interview with Izzy Rome (b 1892), who settled in South Africa in 1908; copy of memoirs of Morris (Maurice) Schmulian (b c 1903), who settled in Johannesburg, 1906; account by Mary Kropman of the life of Samuel Marks (1844-1920) who settled in South Africa in 1868; and articles about Jews in South Africa.

Papers of Erich Kaiser, 1939-1986, comprising original correspondence notably between Erich and sister Ilse, 1939-1940; examples of Erich Kaiser's journalism, 1939 onwards; miscellaneous papers including a letter from Erich's father to relatives in New York, 1941 and correspondence with the Wiener Library Endowment Appeal to Ilse Kaiser regarding an entry in the Wiener Library Memorial book for Erich Kaiser, 1986.

Papers of Hamburg-Amerika linie, 1939, comprise of a notice from the Breslau office of the Hamburg Amerika Linie, travel company, regarding sailings and prices for illegal emigration to Palestine.

Papers of the Morris family, 1901-1905, comprise letters between Frieda Morris' grandmother and father in Poland and her brother and uncle in London. The collection includes translations.

Papers relating to Joachim Prinz, 1936-1937, including text of a speech by former members of Joachim Prinz's congregation, prior to Prinz's departure to the US, [1937]; newspaper cuttings including an article entitled 'Unsere jüdische Kultursituation' by Prinz from the Israelitisches Familienblatt, 7 Oct 1936 and an article written in honour of Prinz shortly prior to his departure to the US, 11 Jun 1937.

Correspondence and papers of the head office of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde, Wien (IKW) (Jewish Cultural Community, Vienna), 1939-1942, including correspondence and statements from the housing and emigration departments of the IKW, which provide biographical details of Jews who have suffered persecution under the Nazis and have subsequently fallen on hard times; copies of letters sent from the head office of the IKW to various municipal authorities and the police regarding treatment of individual Jews; report (author unknown) entitled 'Zwölf Fragen über die Auswanderung aus Wien, 1 Januar bis 30 April 1940', in which many aspects of the Jewish emigration from Vienna are discussed; an original Jewish tram pass issued to Berta Brand and 2 pieces of 'Jude' badges (housed in the Wiener Library 'Special Collections').

Papers of German Confessional Church, 1939-1957, relate to racial origins and aryanism within the German Confessional Church and comprise copies of correspondence including a letter from the temporary directorate of the German Evangelical Church to its regional administrations asking that clergymen submit proof of their Aryan origin, 1939; letter to the temporary directorate of the German Evangelical Church from Alberz and Böhm regarding emigration of those who are non-aryan or related to non-aryans from the German Confessional Church, 1939, and a letter from Alfred Wiener to Pastor Niemoeller, 1957.

Papers of Felix Langer, 1933-1941, comprise three volumes of diaries plus enclosures. The diaries contain mostly sparse notes often barely legible. A large part of the content relates to books.

Personal papers of Walter Manes, 1918-1999, includes correspondence with parents; official documentation; papers relating to his time in Shanghai; correspondence regarding emigration to USA and photographs.

Papers of Eleanor Hess, 1872-1990s, document the life of a German Jewish refugee to Great Britain, and, in part, the lives of family members. The papers include emigration and citizenship papers of her grandfather Emil, c1870s; certificates and First World War army records of Julius, her father and correspondence from Eleanor and her brother, Herbert, in Brazil, to their mother, c1950s. The collection includes 2 boxes of family photographs. In addition there is an unpublished memoir of Eleanor, which describes the life of a Jewish girl in Nazi Germany and the experience of emigration to a foreign land.

Mostly microfilm and 1 file of papers of the Comité voor Joodsche Vluechtlingen and predecessor organisation consisting of reports, memoranda and correspondence mostly on the subject of emigration of German Jews to the Netherlands from 1933 to 1940 and conditions for Jews still in Germany.

This collection comprises 2 deposits: correspondence between a commercial counsellor at the British Embassy, Berlin, and the secretary of the North of England local industrial development organisation; and the papers of Josephine Winter and her husband, Austrian Jewish immigrants to Great Britain including an inventory of possessions, instructions on how aliens should behave in Great Britain; guidelines on how to prepare children prior to despatch on 'Kindertransport'.

Correspondence and papers relating to relief work for Jews in post war Czechoslovakia, 1939-1947, including a memo from the Council of Jewish Communities in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia regarding the status of Jews in Czechoslovakia [1947]; a report on the situation of Jews in Czechoslovakia by the Jewish chaplain for the Czech forces, England, 24 May 1945 and official guarantee forms for entry into Great Britain, [1939]. Records of the Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland (Reich Agency for Jews in Germany), 1933-1938. The papers include committee minutes, reports, memoranda, circulars and correspondence detailing all aspects of the organisation's activities. Also included within 602/8 is a file of transcribed correspondence regarding Gross-Breesen, a non-zionist training camp set up by the Reichsvertretung to prepare young people for life abroad.

Microfilm copies of papers of the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland, 1939, including constitution and drafts; minutes of meetings; circulars and information sheets regarding emigration; accounts; correspondence and file on the Jewish community in Munich.

Correspondence of Heinz Werner Löwenstein, documenting his experiences as a German Jew who emigrated to South Africa in 1935, and the experiences of his parents who remained in Berlin, and who disappeared after having been transported to Riga, Jan 1942. 643/1-4 consists of correspondence between Heinz Werner Löwenstein and his parents, 1935-1940. The letters provide an interesting account of the difficulties encountered by a young immigrant trying to make his way in South Africa as well as of the life led by Jewish people in pre-war Berlin. The letters make hardly any reference to the political situation and the real hardships and dangers of the parents' lives are hidden. 643/5 comprises correspondence from Heinz Werner Löwenstein while he was a sergeant in the South African Army to his friends, Hans and Milly Hirsch, 1941-1943. There is an uninterrupted flow of letters describing life in the army in North Africa until June 1942. In October, the correspondence resumes with a post card from an Italian POW camp. This is followed by more frequent letters after his repatriation in April 1943. The letters not only give a very vivid picture of life in the army and in the POW camp, they are also testimony to the close friendship between Löwenstein and Hans Hirsch, who had known each other in Germany since before their emigration.

Papers of French Jewish and anti-racist organisations, [1920]-1938, comprise a copy of an extract regarding Alliance Israélite Universelle and letter from the same organisation concerning the struggle against antisemitism in France, [1920]; reports on various subjects addressed at 2ème Congres International du Rassemblement Mondiale contra le Racisme et l'Antisémitisme, July 1938, including racism and antisemitism in North Africa, the international problem of immigration, the activities of the World Assembly Against Racism, self defence for free people, organisation and propaganda and demand for a law against racism, 1938 and various papers concerning antisemitism in France with reference to a number of organisations, 1937-1938.

Manuscript report, 1939, describing the experiences of a former Czech civil servant and his wife as they escape from Prague via Katovice to England. The report offers a valuable insight into the difficulties encountered by Czech émigrés in the immediate aftermath of the German occupation in 1939.

Papers of Tony Lynes, 1957-1997, including research papers, correspondence and publications concerning various fields of social policy and administration collected by Lynes in his own research and as advisor to various organisations and individuals. Includes: material relating to research conducted as an assistant to Richard Titmuss and as an advisor to the Labour Party on social security policy; notes and papers concerning Lynes' involvement with the formulation of social security legislation; research material concerning pension schemes and policy (both domestic and international), housing, immigrants, asylum seekers, taxation, unemployment and work undertaken with his wife, Sally; papers, correspondence, reports and publications from and relating to Lynes campaigning and research into the functioning and operation of the Social Fund, 1988-1991.

Records of the Chinese National Healthy Living Centre, including promotional leaflets; recordings made under the oral history project 'Whispers of Time: Memories of Migration and Settlement'; and promotional material from the 'Footprints of the Dragon' project.

Records of the Saam Theatre Group oral history project. The collection consists of a description of the running of the project and typewritten transcripts of the eight interviews, and CD versions of the interviews with a video report on the running of the project on DVD. Because of their format, the CDs and DVD are currently available by appointment only.

Case book of London boys from the Ragged School Union, admitted to a collecting centre for assisted emigrants to Canada, possibly at Walton-on-Thames, containing photographs of the boys. Readers are asked to use the facsimile version of the case book (CLC/225/MS05754A).

Records of the Canada Company, comprising constitutional documents, minutes, share records, bills of exchange and deeds.

Records of the John Roan School, Greenwich, and predecessors. This collection contains Roan Estate deeds for property in Greenwich (1473-1955); Governors' minutes, Head Teachers' reports and Clerk and Surveyor correspondence files (1682-1995); Roan Schools administrative records (1866-2002), pupils admissions and discharge registers (1705-1994), various printed material including school magazines (1834-1999), a large collection of photographs depicting pupils and teaching staff (1895-1990), and commemorative trowel, school badges and items of clothing (1876-1979); and school log books (1884-1976) for various schools operating in Charlton.

Records of particular interest are the Roan Estate deeds (LMA/4442/01/01) which are an excellent resource for the research of family and local history of Greenwich from the 15th to the 20th centuries and the admission and discharge registers (LMA/4442/03/02) provide a fairly comprehensive set of details of pupils who attended the Roan Schools. The calendars and prize giving programmes (LMA/4442/03/03) are also useful for researching pupils at the school and the school magazines, prospectuses (LMA/4442/03/03) and head teachers' reports (LMA/4442/02/01) provide detailed information on school activities, events and other developments.

The school represents a good example of the use of increases in charitable gifts and funds in Greenwich from the 17th century and details can be found in the surviving records of the first school, the Grey Coat School, in the Orders of the Feoffees (1682-1716) (LMA/4442/02/01/01/001) and the Register of admissions and discharges (1705-1736) (LMA/4442/03/02/01/001) which includes churchwardens' charity payments to Greenwich poor widows.

The impact of the Second World War on the Roan Schools is documented by a number of records in the collection including the Governors' Clerk and Surveyor's correspondence files which give detailed descriptions of bomb damage in Greenwich.

Information on the school's planning for the evacuation can be found in the Governors' Clerk's files (LMA/4442/02/02) and some lists of pupils evacuated and accounts of the evacuation to Kent and South Wales for four years can be found in reports in the Roan Schools records (LMA/4442/03/01 and LMA/4442/03/03) and Governors' minutes and Head Teachers' reports (LMA/4442/02/01).

Papers of Arnold White. The topics covered by the collection include gunnery, 1903 to 1905 and naval policy and strategy, on which White exchanged letters with Lord Fisher (1841-1920), Lord Charles Beresford (1848-1930) and Sir Percy Scott (1853-1924). On lower deck conditions the correspondence is largely with Lionel Yexley (1861-1933) and there are notes and letters on Ireland, emigration and eugenics.

The collection consists of circulars issued by the Education Department of the London County Council and circulated to various Local Education Authorities as well as other memorandums and correspondence. The material concerns the possible and eventual evacuation of children and other vulnerable groups from London from 1939 until 1952. There is little information that is specific to Battersea, Wandsworth and individual schools, instead the material focuses on nationwide policies and initiatives. Most of the circulars seem to have been received by the Battersea Divisional Offices in St John's Hill.
