Personal papers of Robert W Ramsey, including diaries (some with glued in event programmes, invitations and newspaper cuttings); commonplace books and household financial accounts; articles by Ramsey on historical and literary subjects; poems and sketches; Ramsey family pedigree, 1688-1904; research on the Cromwell family; and general correspondence.

The collection comprises diaries of William Hugh Burgess, a fifteen-year old boy from a family of Huguenot descent, who lived in Marylebone in the late eighteenth-century. They are rare examples of historical diaries written by a child.

In what became part of his daily routine from January 1788 until October 1790, William wrote about himself and his everyday life, simply recording what he did and what he saw.

This exceptionally interesting collection consists of the archives of a London business family, the Howards, and their relations by marriage, the Eliots. The family were based in London, with homes in the City and various places round about, but they also had property and connections in several other parts of England.

The chief interest of the collection is in its quality as the personal record of a group of prosperous manufacturing and merchant families who were members of the Society of Friends. The Eliots were merchants and their account books, which cover both business and private expenses, together with letters and memoranda, reflect a picture of "City" life in the Eighteenth century. They attended the Change, Lloyd's and Child's and Jonathan's and other Coffee Houses, and dealt with a variety of business including trade overseas in cotton and duck cloth and Cornish tin and invested in "a voyage to Lima" and other merchant shipping ventures (including that of the Tuscany, unfortunately "Taken by the French and carried into Marseilles" in 1757). (See especially numbers 905, 928, 929, 944, etc.).

There is interesting material relating to John Eliot's estates supplemented by John Eliot's letters (e.g. Numbers 988-1011), which also mention a "good season" for pilchards, the decline of the docks at Topsham, the appropriation by the Government of some sugar pans near Exeter to use for French prisoners, etc. John's sister Mariabella also purchased in 1765 Pickhurst Farm, Hayes, Kent (Nos. 376-475).

There are amongst this collection a few letters and papers of later Howards, including an interesting pocket diary in which Samuel Lloyd Howard, grandson of Luke, jotted (unfortunately rather roughly in pencil) memoranda and sketches of impressions of his visit to America in 1854 (No. 1618). At sea his ship rescued the crew of the Hannay of Whitehaven, loaded with salt and flying a distress signal-"lay to and took all off, boy, baggage, chronometer, barometers and all".

At all periods the family kept in close touch with their relations in all parts of the country, including the Hows of Aspley, Bedfordshire, the Paces of Westmorland and London, the Leathams of Yorkshire as well as with fellow Quakers. This gives the collection a national rather than a local interest-indeed the family were not primarily associated with any one locality.

A curious document amongst the collection is a receipt dated 1824 for 8. 15s from R. Smith for freeing Hamma Fie, slave to Bentoo Demba, and signed with the mark of Madeba, Alcaide of "Birkow" (No. 1617/p.12). The Society of Friends Committee for African Instruction supported some missions, and Richard Smith, a friend of Luke Howard, was in Africa in the 1820's.

Quaker marriage certificates, of which there are several examples (eg. Nos. 117, 565, 1273, 1274, etc) give full details of both parties and are signed by members of the Meeting as witnesses. Birth certificates (e.g., Nos. 1275-1286, 1390-1393) give the date of birth and name, and were signed by witnesses to the baby's birth. The Society of Friends was in advance of both the State and established Church in respect of such documentation.

Two diaries of the Reverend C Wilfred Howard.

The monumental inscriptions and armorial bearings in the churches within the City of London, a five volume work by Arthur Jewers, compiled for the Library Committee of the City of London, 1910-1919. Includes transcripts of monumental and other inscriptions in the churches, with drawings (many coloured) of armorial bearings, and extracts from wills and other genealogical notes about the persons and families commemorated. Also correspondence with the Library Committee relating to the preparation of the work, 1910-1919, and Library Committee report, 1924.

Records of Arthur William Dunk, Boer War soldier in the City Imperial Volunteers, comprising official papers; letters and postcards written home during his service; notebooks providing itinerary of travels in South Africa; and menu cards and programmes for dinners of the City Imperial Volunteers Old Comrades Association.

This collection contains the papers of Constance Maynard from 1866-1935. Transcriptions of three scribbling diaries kept by footman Arthur Newbury with biographical essay of Newbury, modern photographs of addresses mentioned in the diaries, maps, index and note on sources, all compiled by David Jackson, who may have obtained the diary at a car boot sale in Cheshire (115pp), February 1997.

Handwitten notebook, entitled 'Manuscript of various pieces of poetry and prose by A Wise Man of the East' containing religious and other poetry composed by George Butler, with notes on the inspirations and subjects for many of the poems, with photocopy of notebook (c200pp) (May 1850 - September 1883).

This scrapbook consists of press cuttings relating to concerts, entertainments, recitals, dramatic performances, fetes, bazaars, charitable and fund-raising events, many taken from women's magazines, such as The Lady; also includes profiles of women notable for a wide range of specialisms ranging from botany to tapestry painting.

Receipt books, with medical and culinary recipes plus pasted-in material including newspaper cuttings, c 1785-1860.

Much of the collection is made up of diaries and notebooks relating to expeditions sent to Africa by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to study diseases such as malaria and trypanosomiasis. From Todd's subsequent career there is also material on journeys to Western Canada to study Swamp Fever in horses and to Poland to study Typhus, some general notes on tropical diseases, a laboratory notebook on experiments with fever ticks and a paper on the Congo Free State as a political unit. The dates covered are 1901-1920. A final block of material consists of letters and loose papers including sketches, covering 1890-1949.

Commonplace book by Henry Holden (MS.2863), plus notes by A W J Haggis of the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum (MS.8956) summarising the volume and comprising a contents list and some transcriptions.

The volumes comprise McGrigor's holograph autobiography.

Collection of medical receipts and remedies with several indexes. On p. 6 of Vol. I is the date 1726, but there are additions by other hands, one of which on p. 528 of Vol. II is dated 1784. In Vol. II, paginated 511-514, is a printed 'Propriétez de l'élixir de M. Garrus médecin', probably contemporary with the MS.

The collection covers both Pettigrew's medical and antiquarian activities, which are intermingled in the material's arrangement. The medical items include correspondence with many medical figures, medical jurisprudence (an Anniversary Oration delivered to the Medical Society of London), corpulence, hydrophobia, medical observations by army officers in India, and an autobiographical memoir of the philanthropist and prison-reformer James Neild (1744-1814), transcribed by Pettigrew and incorporated into his life of John Coakley Lettsom M.D. The antiquarian items include material on Kett's Rebellion, Hindu deities, the library of the Duke of Sussex and correspondence with the Italian antiquary Giovanni Spano (1803-1878) and Gaetano Cara, as part of Pettigrew's role as Vice-President of the British Archaeological Society. Types of material held include notebooks, loose papers, correspondence and diplomas.

These MSS., now divided into two volumes, formed originally one volume. There is a pen-drawn historiated frontispiece to the 'Antidotaire': texts within black rules. The Antidotire is dated 1662, the other volume 1663.

Two volumes of notes, in Latin comprising 'Collegium formulare habitum ab illustri Domino Georgio Wolfgangio Wedelio. A.O.R. MDCXCIV coeptum Die 19 Novembris'. The last four leaves contain an account of a 'Zermabschwechtende hitzigen Fieber', which broke out in 1696. At the end of the main text 'Finit die 27 April 1695'. On the t.p. is an inscription 'Sorte obtinuit Johannes Philippus Huth, Doctor Fridburgensis in Wetterau. 1712. 14 Novembris'. MS. No. 4984, a copy of Wedel's 'Collegium casuale', 1695-98, has a similar inscription on the t.p. in which it is stated that the MS. was inherited by J. P. Huth from his uncle Philippus Huth, Doctor at Gemersheim 1712, who was probably the compiler of both these MSS. At the end of this MS. is inserted a printed leaflet containing an account of a disturbance in the city of Thorn between Polish and German students on 16 July 1724. (This leaflet is entered in the Catalogue of Printed Books, s.v. 'THORN'.) and 'Collegium casuale' (in two books). 'Collegium therapeuticum'. The two folding leaves have been inserted, and contain a 'Tabula de methodo consultandi epistolari et renunciatoria'. On the recto of the first of these is written 'Collegium casuale a chymista Wedelio habita' and below this 'Sorte obtinuit hoc manuscriptum ex hereditate beati Domini Patruelis Philippi Huth, Medicinae Doctoris et Physici Germersheimensis 1712. 14 Septembris. Johannes Philippus Huth'. The second inscription is by a different hand from that of the text. A similar inscription is found in MS. No. 4983, Wedel's 'Collegium formulare', 1695-96. At the end of the second book of the 'Collegium casuale' is written 'Finit. Anno [16]98 die 23 Januarii', and at the beginning of the 'Collegium therapeuticum' 'Mense Maii 1695 inceptum'.

Prescription books [of William Martindale], 1885-1890. A number of the prescriptions are in fact recipes, including formulae for Sir Joseph Lister for cyanide of mercury and zinc in suspension (e.g. no. 2000), and another for '[Franz] Ziehl's stain for the tubercle bacillus' (no. 2600). Also included are reports on the analysis of drinking water at Winchelsea and elsewhere by John Attfield, Professor of Practical Chemistry at the Pharmaceutical Society, and by Dr Charles Meymott Tidy (nos. 2438-2439, 2892, 2979, 3035).

'Cosarelle da me praticate et esperimentate', a collection of medical receipts. The title as given above is taken from the Dedicatory Epistle.

Manuscript copies of texts by, or collated by Ruffo, plus in some cases other veterinary texts added to works by Ruffo. The texts reflect his work in veterinary medicine, primarily concerning the care and treatment of domestic animals, particularly horses. Includes 'De medicina equorum'; 'Arte de conoscere la natura dei cavalli'; 'Libro dell'infirmita dei cavalli' and 'Le medicine de' cavalli'.

Notebooks of Alexander Kinloch Forbes, historian of Gujarat, containing notes on Gujarati history, legends and customs, pedigrees, descriptions of historical monuments and translations of inscriptions, compiled from 1849 onwards. The volumes are the remains of a larger body of research materials gathered by Forbes, from which he compiled Râs Mâlâ, Hindu annals of Western India with particular reference to Gujarat (1856). They contain however much additional matter, and indeed Forbes continued to add to them after publication of that work.

Recipe and account book with ownership inscription of Thomas Brigstocke Humphreys, Portmadoc, 1859. The book has later been used to accommodate newspaper cuttings (including several relating to members of the Humphreys and Brigstocke families, among them H. Humphreys of Aberystwyth, also a chemist, and various Humphreys in Llanelli) and ephemera. The latter relate to a wide variety of chemists' firms, chiefly in London; these include Corbyn and Co. (see MSS. 5435-5460).

A small collection of English medical and cookery receipt books, assembled from several sources, 18th-19th century.

Letters to and from various members of the Herschel family. MS.7867 contains material relating to Sir William Herschel (1738-1822), Caroline Lucretia Herschel (1750-1848) and Alexander Stewart Herschel (1836-1907); MS.7868 centres on Sir John Frederick William Herschel (1792-1871).

Papers of Charles Thompson including essays, notes, recipe book (MS.7984) and correspondence, 1893-1936. Much of this material was created in Thompson's capacity as a Wellcome employee.

The first book of horses and the Second book of horses contributed to by a number of different grooms, huntsmen, farriers, etc., but predominately in the hand of Eusebius Ashby.

Papers of Frederick Gordon Spear, 1908-1980. These papers fall naturally into several distinct groups; items pertaining to his radiological research conducted in Cambridge at the Strangeways Laboratory, materials about the Strangeways Laboratory as an institution, presumably accumulated during his many years as deputy director, papers relating to his connections with other bodies associated with radiology, such as the Hospital Physicists Association and the British Institute of Radiology, of which he was president in 1961, publications and unpublished papers by him, and also some publications by others on subjects related to the work he was doing.

A very small amount of material, not classifiable under these headings, has been put together in a 'Personal' section.

While Spear originally studied tropical medicine, and spent some time at the Baptist Mission Hospital at Yakusu in the Belgian Congo in the early 1920s this aspect of his career is not represented in these papers.

Received along with Spear's papers were a number of notebooks formerly belonging to his first wife Ada Louisa Sowerby, which she kept during her nurse and midwifery training in London in the later 1920s.

Papers, published and unpublished, by Tina Keller, 1938-1982, relating to her training and work as an analytical psychologist. They include both an unpublished autobiography, and her recollections of her encounter with Jung and other members of his circle.

Louisa Martindale collection, 1872-1964. The collection consists of Section A: a little personal correspondence, papers, articles, speeches and lectures by Louisa Martindale, and some personal material including notes on the glaucoma which eventually blinded her, 1872-1960; and Section B: papers concerning the Medical Women's International Association (founded 1919) of which Miss Martindale was President from 1937 to 1947. As well as her own correspondence in this capacity, 1937-1946, there is one file of the correspondence of Mme Montreuil-Strauss, Secretary of the Medical Women's International Association at his period. (Louisa Martindale destroyed the vast bulk of her case records at the time of her retirement from practice around 1950, those remaining were destroyed by her executors after her death).
