Records of the Central British Fund for World Jewish Relief, predecessor organisations and associated organisations. The archive details the work of the Fund in shelters, hostels, internment camps, schools and foster homes.

Records of Archbishop Tenison's Grammar School (formerly known as Archbishop Tenison's Secondary School for Boys). Most important are the Trustees' and Governors' meetings minutes 1847-1953 (ref: Acc/2692/17-19). An unusual survival has been a number of evacuation records, which do not exist for many schools in London (ref: Acc/2692/142-148). Illustrations of the school and its life are present in a volume of plans of the school site at Kennington Oval dated 1927 (by A.H.R. Tenison, Architect, ref: Acc/2692/154), and in the large collection of photographs (ref: Acc/2692/155-205). Concerning the sale of the library in 1861 is a Catalogue from Sotheby's which records the prices fetched at auction for individual books (ref: Acc/2692/209). A history of the school, not entirely accurate, was written in 1928 and a transcript survives (ref: Acc/2692/240).

The papers are very extensive though there are some lacunae, probably attributable to Chain's many changes of workplace. The early biographical period is sparsely documented, there are sporadic gaps in the correspondence files, and there is no original documentation of the penicillin research at Oxford (although there are many historical accounts and much correspondence about the history of penicillin). The surviving biographical material provides documentation of the arrangements for Chain to live and work in Britain, later honours and awards and his musical interests, and family correspondence, photographs and press-cuttings. There are very substantial records of his later career at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and Imperial College, London, including his continuing contributions to biochemical problems such as carbohydrate metabolism, ergot alkaloids, edible proteins and aeration studies. The Imperial College material also contains records of the creation, administration, finance and architectural design of the Biochemistry Department, and developments in the Department after Chain's statutory retirement in 1973. Additional information about Chain's research is available in the documentation of his very extensive consultancy agreements and collaborative work with industrial firms such as Astra, Beechams and Rank Hovis McDougall, and records relating to government, grant-giving and charitable bodies such as the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research Campaign and Medical Research Council which contributed to the funding of his research. There is much material on Chain's lectures, addresses and broadcasts, and on his extensive travel on visits and conferences, which includes a substantial number of unpublished talks.

An exceptional feature of the Chain papers is the documentation of the large number of Israel and Jewish organisations with which he was associated, especially the Weizmann Institute of Science, where he was a governor for many years and had at one time considered taking up an appointment.

Papers of the Morris family, 1901-1905, comprise letters between Frieda Morris' grandmother and father in Poland and her brother and uncle in London. The collection includes translations.

Papers relating to Joachim Prinz, 1936-1937, including text of a speech by former members of Joachim Prinz's congregation, prior to Prinz's departure to the US, [1937]; newspaper cuttings including an article entitled 'Unsere jüdische Kultursituation' by Prinz from the Israelitisches Familienblatt, 7 Oct 1936 and an article written in honour of Prinz shortly prior to his departure to the US, 11 Jun 1937.

Papers of Felix Langer, 1933-1941, comprise three volumes of diaries plus enclosures. The diaries contain mostly sparse notes often barely legible. A large part of the content relates to books.

Four Exchequer receipts dated 1568, 1580, 1616 and 1622 were found enclosed with a letter to Watson's wife.

Papers of Ferdinand Schwarz documenting, in part, the process of emigration from Germany to England in 1939, comprising correspondence from Ferdinand Schwarz and his father, Max Schwarz to Ella Courts on emigration procedures from Germany to England; copy of a letter from the Jüdische Beratungsstelle für Wirtschaftshilfe to Schwarz confirming that the latter will receive a permit from the German Jewish Aid Committee; application form from the German Jewish Aid Committee for persons desiring to leave Germany on political, racial or religious grounds and a stamp coupon.

Manuscript report, 1939, describing the experiences of a former Czech civil servant and his wife as they escape from Prague via Katovice to England. The report offers a valuable insight into the difficulties encountered by Czech émigrés in the immediate aftermath of the German occupation in 1939.

Papers of Hitahadut Olej Germania, 1933-1934, an activity report, are divided into sections notably including correspondence from abroad providing details about prospective emigrants,including first help on arrival, economic organisation, cultural work, social work and financial report, 1933-1934; proposal for a credit bank, 1934; information circular regarding agricultural developments, 1934; remarks on the future work of Hitahadut Olej Germania, [1933-1934] and report on the remit of the Agricultural Department of Hitahadut Olej Germania, [1933-1934].

Papers of the Refugee Council relating to all aspects of refugee history, policy and practice, both in the UK and worldwide, from the 1950s to the time of writing. The collection covers Pyman's career from 1937 until 1963 when he suffered a severe stroke which forced his retirement in 1964. The earliest papers date from Pyman's work with the Royal Tank Cadre in converting the 17/21 Lancers from a cavalry to an armoured regiment. There are also papers from Pyman's period as an instructor at the Staff College in Quetta, India, 1939-1941. Pyman was involved in the World War Two campaigns by the 8 Army in the Western Desert, in 1941 as General Staff Officer with 7 Armoured Div, 30 Corps and in 1942-1943 as Commander of the 3 Royal Tank Regiment, 10 Armoured Div, 30 Corps. The papers consist mostly of Pyman's assessments of lessons learned from the ongoing campaigns particularly with regard to tanks and armoured units. In 1944-1945 Pyman was Brigidier General Staff, 30 Corps, 2 Army in the Normandy landings and the invasion of Northern Europe, with particular responsibility for organisation and planning of the Rhine crossing and advance to the Baltic. This is reflected in the papers which largely consist of planning studies and reports for the operations involved, this section also contains maps used in the campaign. Pyman's next appointment was as Chief of General Staff, Allied Land Forces, South East Asia, 1945-1946 which is documented by a series of diaries which reflect the tasks faced by Pyman in this command including dealing with the build up of tension between newly liberated former colonies keen to assert their right for independence and the former colonial powers such as France and Netherlands. Pyman spent 1946-1949 as Chief of Staff, Middle East Land Forces and kept monthly diaries which form the bulk of this section of the collection. The diary entries and additional papers reflect the debate over policy in the Middle East in the British Government and Military command, they include detail on the British withdrawal from Greece, the problem of illegal Jewish immigrants and their internment in Cyprus, the end of the British mandate in Palestine and the the effect of this on relations between Britain with Egypt and the other Arab states and the subsequent Arab Israeli conflict. This section of the collection also contains correspondence between Pyman and Maj Gen Sir Miles Christopher Dempsey on personal matters and on the Middle East. There are also papers from Pyman's work at the Ministry of Supply as Director General of Fighting Vehicles, 1951-1953, Director of Weapons Development, War Office, 1955-1956 mostly brief diary entries and lecture texts. Pyman was also General Officer Commanding, British Army on the Rhine, 1953-1955 and General Officer Commanding, 1 British Corps, 1956-1958 and the papers relating to these commands consist mostly of lectures, reports and directives reflecting his interest in armoured divisions and training. There are some papers, mostly personal correspondence and press cuttings, from Pyman's final command as Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces Northern Europe in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). The collection also contains correspondence relating to Pyman's role as Colonel Commandant of the Royal Tank Regiment and The Royal Armoured Corps and a series of letters covering the reorganisation of the Berks and Westminster Dragoons, of which he was Honorary Colonel. The rest of the collection consists of diaries, correspondence, speeches, writings including the draft copy and papers relating to his autobiography, some preparatory work on a history of the 2 Army and reference works. The collection also includes the Boer War diaries and other papers of Col James Redmond Patrick Gordon who commanded the 1 Cavalry Bde of the South African Field Force 1900-1901 which were given to Pyman by a friend.

Records of George Brown, chandler, 1821-1843, comprising letter book dated 1821-1842, which contains information on Brown's business dealings including much comment on the state of shipping at various times, many references to steam vessels as early as 1821, and a large number of letters and memoranda relating to the seizure by the Portuguese of the steamship 'Lord of the Isles' in which Brown had an interest and subsequent attempts to get redress.

Also a memoranda book, 1833-1843, mainly recording brief memoranda of letters sent and received from 'George' or about 'George' who would appear to have settled in Canada and made attempts at farming and business. Evidence suggests that 'George' was the son of George Brown who was joined for a while in Canada by his mother and sisters. The book gives considerable information concerning shipping to and from North America; settlers in Canada and their acquisition of land; early government of Canada; references to the Canada Company, an account of 'stores required for a settler going to New Zealand' and details of goods sent out to 'George'.

This collection comprises 2 deposits: correspondence between a commercial counsellor at the British Embassy, Berlin, and the secretary of the North of England local industrial development organisation; and the papers of Josephine Winter and her husband, Austrian Jewish immigrants to Great Britain including an inventory of possessions, instructions on how aliens should behave in Great Britain; guidelines on how to prepare children prior to despatch on 'Kindertransport'.

This microfilm collection of correspondence documents the experiences of Julius Bloch and family and friends, some of whom managed to escape Nazi occupied Europe, and others, who did not. The papers include correspondence from his brother in Gurs concentration camp in the French Pyrénees, where he died.

Records of the Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland (Reich Agency for Jews in Germany), 1933-1938. The papers include committee minutes, reports, memoranda, circulars and correspondence detailing all aspects of the organisation's activities. Also included within 602/8 is a file of transcribed correspondence regarding Gross-Breesen, a non-zionist training camp set up by the Reichsvertretung to prepare young people for life abroad.

Correspondence of Heinz Werner Löwenstein, documenting his experiences as a German Jew who emigrated to South Africa in 1935, and the experiences of his parents who remained in Berlin, and who disappeared after having been transported to Riga, Jan 1942. 643/1-4 consists of correspondence between Heinz Werner Löwenstein and his parents, 1935-1940. The letters provide an interesting account of the difficulties encountered by a young immigrant trying to make his way in South Africa as well as of the life led by Jewish people in pre-war Berlin. The letters make hardly any reference to the political situation and the real hardships and dangers of the parents' lives are hidden. 643/5 comprises correspondence from Heinz Werner Löwenstein while he was a sergeant in the South African Army to his friends, Hans and Milly Hirsch, 1941-1943. There is an uninterrupted flow of letters describing life in the army in North Africa until June 1942. In October, the correspondence resumes with a post card from an Italian POW camp. This is followed by more frequent letters after his repatriation in April 1943. The letters not only give a very vivid picture of life in the army and in the POW camp, they are also testimony to the close friendship between Löwenstein and Hans Hirsch, who had known each other in Germany since before their emigration.

Papers of Siegfried Kessler, a Czech Jewish exile in London, 1939-1944, chiefly correspondence between organisations and individuals, shedding light on the conditions for Czech Jews in Czechoslovakia in the early years of the Second World War and the processes involved in Jewish emigration from Czechoslovakia.

Papers of Hamburg-Amerika linie, 1939, comprise of a notice from the Breslau office of the Hamburg Amerika Linie, travel company, regarding sailings and prices for illegal emigration to Palestine.

Papers of Youth Aliyah workers, comprise typescript reports on the experiences of children who managed to escape Nazi occupied Europe and arrived in Palestine, 1944. The names of the children are represented as initials.

Correspondence of Elise Steiner and other family papers, 1938-1940. The collection documents the day to day activities, hopes and aspirations of a Jewish family in Vienna on subjects including gratitude that at least one child was able to escape and moreover to continue with her education; efforts to find a place on the Kindertransport for Leo Steiner; news of the fate of other family members who had managed to emigrate to various countries and the takeover of the family business. Despite the increasing difficulties of life in Vienna exemplified by the occasional suicide of friends and the growing fear of being out on the streets, there is a sense that life has to go on. Mention is made of the celebration of Jewish festivals and of training for new occupations. Whilst the prospect of emigration recedes, the family continues to make preparations for a future departure by selling off possessions and studying English.
