VALUATION DEPARTMENT: GOAD FIRE INSURANCE PLANS
        LCC/VA/GOAD · Coleção · 1923-1957
        Parte de LONDON COUNTY COUNCIL

Goad Fire Insurance Plans used by the London County Council Valuation Department, 1923-1957. The plans in this series consist of two sets of plans bound in large volumes which cover the London area. Those numbered I - XII map in detail the central areas of London north and south of the River Thames, and include the docks and the Regents Canal. The second set are lettered A - K (there is no letter I) and only survey in detail the 'congested areas' in the rest of the County of London. These latter plans extend into Essex to a certain extent but omit parts of south and much of south-east London.

Each volume consists of plans in numerical order beginning with one or more key plans. Detailed information given includes street names and name changes, house numbers, street widths, the nature of any business carried out, the names of occupiers of large buildings or large numbers of buildings, the structure of buildings, existing fire precautions, dimensions of rooms and where relevant, information about floors other than the ground floor. Much of the structural information is conveyed by signs. Very occaisionally a section of the building is shown.

Specification of Works to be contracted for in Building the Conservative Club House in St. James Street, May 1843, formed of 20 large parchment membranes taped together.

The Specification commences with 74 articles dealing with the structure, the site, and general conditions for the performance of the work; these fill rather more than five membranes. The rest of the Specification is headed "Description of inside Work and Finishings" and deals with the interior of the intended building, room by room, and staircases, passages, etc. There are ten small marginal drawings of mouldings, fitments, etc.

        The signatories are:

        Boston W. Ormsby Gore J.M. Fector Geo.Baker Castlereagh Geo.W.Baker

The place of Lord Boston and Viscount Castlereagh and W. Ormsby Gore, as Conservative peers and Conservative M.P. respectively, is obvious. The function of John Minet Fector in this transaction is as yet unascertained; he was a collateral descendant of the well-known Minet family. The two Bakers doubtless represent the firm of George Baker and Son, builders, of Palace New Road, Lambeth.

Although the collection does not include Godber's official papers from his various appointments or his personal papers, it nevertheless conveys a strong impression of his personality, energy and breadth of interests throughout his career. Godber's papers at the Ministry of Health and the Department of Health and Social Security were left almost entirely for his successors, to be transferred as appropriate to the Public Record Office.
