The collection was established in 1985 by Liz Ward, Librarian at Chelsea College, the result of increasing demand by students for documentation recognising the contribution to British art by artists of African-Caribbean, Asian and African descent. It has grown naturally as a part of the library's collection.

The collection was established in 1985 by Liz Ward, Librarian at Chelsea College, the result of increasing demand by students for documentation recognising the contribution to British art by artists of African-Caribbean, Asian and African descent. It has grown naturally as a part of the library's collection.
The collection was established at St Martin's School of Art Library, and moved to Chelsea School of Art and the foundation of the London Institute in 1986.
Records documenting the work of contemporary artists practising in Britain of African-Caribbean, Asian and African descent, 1970-2002, largely comprising exhibition posters, exhibition cards, press releases, press cuttings, videos, audio tapes and slides; records of The Peoples' Gallery, Camden, 1984-1987, comprising publicity flyers, press cuttings.
By written application to the Librarian, Manresa Road, London, SW3 6LS. Researchers from the London Institute may visit by appointment.
Photocopying is permitted, although copying of fragile material is at the discretion of the librarian.

This bibliography published in association with InIVA documents the collection up to 1996. The exhibition catalogues and published books relating to the collection are catalogued.
The Institute of International Visual Arts (InIVA), University of East London's African and Asian Visual Artists Archive and the University of Westminster's Panchayat Archive hold similar material.
